Digital Program: Writing the College Application Essay

08/06/2020 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Join us for a two-part class on how to write the college essay used on the common application. We will meet using Zoom. This class is intended for high schoolers planning to apply to colleges for the first time in the fall, but it is open to anyone. Parents are welcome to join as well. It’s time to conquer your fear of the word essay!

Class 1: Thursday, August 6 @ 6:30PM
Learn the basics of what makes a strong college application essay. Read essay examples together of the good, the bad, and the just plain bizarre. Participants will then be able to brainstorm about potential topics for their own essays. In the week betweeen classes, students will practice writing a draft based on one, or a couple, of their potential topics.

Class 2: Thursday, August 13 @ 6:30PM
Get feedback from a writing tutor and others in the meeting on draft essays. Participants will discuss and reflect on what challenges they had while writing, what they’d like to change, and whether or not they want to try a new topic. Close with some stress reduction tips about the college application process.

You must register to attend this program. To protect the security of the meeting, the join link will be provided the day of the meeting via email. You can find more resources about how to use Zoom, a video conferencing program, on their website.
