The Life of Lt. Colonel William Ledyard

09/07/2023 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Free

Most people know Lt. Colonel William Ledyard for his death during the Battle of Groton Heights in 1781. But what about his life? Writer John Steward will fill in the missing pieces of Ledyard’s legacy at Bill Memorial Library on Thursday, September 7, at 6:30 PM.

Ledyard was a merchant, legislator, husband, and father of nine, with much to lose when he was brutally killed in Connecticut’s only Revolutionary War battle. During his talk, Steward will explore Ledyard’s personal and business worlds and the national events that guided his life and destiny.
This in-person program is free, but registration is required. To register, or for questions, contact the library at 860-445-0392.

John Steward writes Tossing Lines, a monthly newspaper column published in The Day’s Times editions and online at www.theday.com. Steward spent much of his childhood in and around Fort Griswold and is a long-time student of the fort’s history. He has presented on William Ledyard for the Connecticut Historical Society, the Friends of Fort Griswold, the Ledyard Historical Society, the Thames Club, and other organizations.
