SUMMARY:Leah Angstman (Out Front the Following Sea) Author Talk and Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents Leah Angstman discussing the book Out Front the Following Sea. This event will be moderated by Nancy Burns-Fusaro from the Westerly Sun. \nAbout the Book\nOut Front the Following Sea is a historical epic of one woman’s survival in a time when the wilderness is still wild\, heresy is publicly punishable\, and being independent is worse than scorned—it is a death sentence. At the onset of King William’s War between French and English settlers in 1689 New England\, Ruth Miner is accused of witchcraft for the murder of her parents and must flee the brutality of her town. She stows away on the ship of the only other person who knows her innocence: an audacious sailor—Owen—bound to her by years of attraction\, friendship\, and shared secrets. But when Owen’s French ancestry finds him at odds with a violent English commander\, the turmoil becomes life-or-death for the sailor\, the headstrong Ruth\, and the cast of Quakers\, Pequot Indians\, soldiers\, highwaymen\, and townsfolk dragged into the fray. Now Ruth must choose between sending Owen to the gallows or keeping her own neck from the noose. \nAbout the Author\nLeah Angstman is a historian and transplanted Michigander. Her writing has been a finalist for the Saluda River Prize\, Cowles Book Prize\, Able Muse Book Award\, Bevel Summers Fiction Prize\, and Chaucer Book Award\, and has appeared in Publishers Weekly\, L.A. Review of Books\, Electric Literature\, Nashville Review\, Slice\, and elsewhere. She serves as editor-in-chief for Alternating Current and vice chair for a Colorado historical commission.

SUMMARY:Paul Dunion (Wisdom: Apprenticing to the Unknown and Befriending Fate) Author Talk at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Paul Dunion for the new book\, Wisdom: Apprenticing to the Unknown and Befriending Fate. \nAbout the Book\nIt may be time to let go of the naivete that our technological devices will magically reveal the nature of absolute truth\, or that some alluring formula will serve our need for immediate gratification and penetrate life’s mysteries. We seem to have forgotten that it is by the light of wisdom that we begin to understand who we are and make some sense of the journey we call life. \nWisdom – Apprenticing to the Unknown and Befriending Fate tells a story of what it means to apprentice to the unknown. It offers a strong plea – stop trying to get life right and allow life to get you right. \nSuch an allowance happens over time as the ego comes to know defeat and the illusion of its sovereignty. The wisdom path must be walked with curiosity and honesty\, letting ourselves admit that we are employing some form of bypass that can allegedly circumvent life’s unpredictability and insecurity. Apprentices become increasingly informed by letting go of what is out of their control and learning to find the courage to address what is in their control. The reader learns what it means to remain a student of life\, less enamored with being impressive\, and as the need to perform and achieve atrophy\, gains a devout receptivity to all that fate desires to teach. Wisdom is a verb. It is the apprenticing in a constant state of inquiry. \nAbout Paul Dunion\nOften described as an eclectic mystic\, Paul’s tagline is “making peace with mystery.” His legacy of being a Celtic storyteller has gifted him as a writer and muse. He brings his 40-year background as a psychological healer and philosopher to examining in his blogs and books the kinds of life choices that can yield the wisdom path. \nHe has received high praise from Writers Digest Self-Published Book Awards for his previous book Seekers as well as a Reader’s Favorite 5-Star Review for his newly-released Wisdom\, focusing on what it means to see life as offering an Initiation\, guiding and challenging us to find our way to our own depths.

SUMMARY:Thomas Bardenwerper (Mona Passage) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Thomas Bardenwerper for the new book\, Mona Passage. \nAbout the Book\nMona Passage is the story of two neighbors in San Juan\, Puerto Rico: Galán Betances\, a Cuban emigrant\, and Pat McAllister\, a young Coast Guard officer. During long evenings spent together talking on their Calle Luna rooftop\, a deep friendship develops based on shared traumas and a common desire to heal. When Galán learns that his sister\, Gabriela\, is going to be committed to a mental health facility in Cuba\, he plans her escape to Puerto Rico. Pat\, whose Coast Guard cutter patrols the Mona Passage for drug traffickers and migrants\, warns Galán that such a journey will be treacherous—perhaps fatal. Aware of the dangers but determined for Gabriela to live a full life\, Galán hands over all the money he has to a Dominican smuggler based out of a San Juan nightclub\, and Gabriela begins her terrifying journey. \nKnowing that his cutter may be all that separates Galán and Gabriela—and haunted by the human suffering he has witnessed at sea—Pat must decide. Will he remain true to his oath\, as his older brother had done in Iraq? Or will he risk his own future—and perhaps his freedom—for his closest friend? \nOn a moonless night\, two armed vessels converge in the Mona Passage\, and three lives change forever. \nAbout Thomas Bardenwerper\nThomas “Buddy” Bardenwerper served five years in the US Coast Guard aboard cutters homeported in Maine and Puerto Rico. He participated in humanitarian and law enforcement missions from the Gulf of Maine to the Caribbean Basin. After being medically retired for Type 1 diabetes in 2018\, Bardenwerper began a joint degree program at Harvard Law School and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Upon graduation in 2022\, Bardenwerper will be moving to Miami with his wife and daughter. “Mona Passage” is his first novel.

Sokolowski\, The Original Equinista™\nFacebook * Instagram * LinkedIn * Twitter\n• • • • •\n“A full-bodied read that is delightfully mercurial and intriguing. It’s an excellent probe into the world of art smuggling that adds just enough history to be thoroughly absorbing without requiring any background in the art world. Likewise\, no knowledge of horses is needed to appreciate the exciting world of international show jumping—the plot is grounded in an absorbing mystery that will captivate a broad audience…One of the best conclusions to a story that I’ve seen\, lately.”\n—Diane Donovan\, Donovan Literary Services\, Midwest Book Review \nAbout Andrea Steele\nAndrea Wilson Steele was born in England\, and lived in Canada as a child before her family emigrated to the United States and settled in Connecticut. SUMMARY:Courtney McInvale Reardon (Civil War Ghosts of Connecticut) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Courtney Mcinvale Reardon for the new book\, Civil War Ghosts of Connecticut. \nAbout the Book\nFollow the haunting tales of Connecticut’s role in America’s Civil War through the eyes of those who fought in it. From Generals Mansfield and Lyon to Privates Tarbox and Brooks\, discover the harrowing tales of grizzled soldiers – in this world and beyond – fighting against countrymen and brothers. Explore the tales of the segregated ranks like the Irish and Colored Regiments as well as the abolitionists and provisions suppliers\, including Harriet Beecher Stowe and Samuel Colt. The stories of these people’s lives carry on through the hauntings and ghost stories that now permeate throughout the countryside\, collected and retold by author\, tour guide\, and psychic medium Courtney McInvale who visited and researched countless battle sites\, prisons\, museums\, and historic homesteads to present this haunted history of Connecticut. More than just ghost stories told during the Victorian era – although some of those are certainly included – Civil War Ghosts of Connecticut paints a colorful\, but sobering\, landscape of the deadliest time in American history. \nAbout Courtney Mcinvale\nCourtney McInvale Reardon is the founder of Seaside Shadows based out of Mystic\, Connecticut and offering walking tours and boat tours throughout the southern New England region. She is a licensed tour guide\, published author and actual descendant of accused witches. She is a Connecticut native and Courtney spent 5 years in DC after completing her studies at Catholic University of America and the University College Dublin where she studied abroad\, majoring in International Relations. After earning her degree\, she worked for the FBI as an analyst — having been influenced by her time interning at NCIS for the Cold Case Homicide Unit– She then spent 2 years in Vermont working for Dept of Homeland Security and honing her investigative skills. Courtney also spent many months in Ireland in study and visiting\, a place rich with histories and hauntings alike! She avidly studies histories of Celtic cultures\, specifically Ireland and Scotland\, specializing in rebellions. Her love for rebellion history dates to the studies of the American Civil War that began in childhood. Her father\, a history major at the University of Georgia\, had Courtney memorize the names of Civil War Generals by photograph before she turned seven. She lost many ancestors to the Civil War on both sides and researching and writing about War between the States seemed to be her destiny. Courtney is an empathic spirit medium — able to feel\, see and communicate with spirits. She has frequently had experiences involving the paranormal. In Courtney’s childhood home in central Connecticut\, in a town called East Hampton numerous paranormal occurrences happened. The events were so extreme that the Warren family came to investigate and exorcise the house during her teenage years there. Due to her haunting past\, and ability to see and communicate with spirit\, she has always taken an interest in the unknown and has now put her sensitivities\, investigative skills\, love of history\, and writing aspirations to work. Courtney is also a realist amongst all things and believes no tour or book can be complete without corroborating information. Each book and tour she creates is inundated with historical facts to corroborate all the haunting occurrences surrounding the topic. This is Courtney’s third book for Arcadia Publishing and the History Press – the other two: Haunted Mystic (2014)\, Revolutionary War Ghosts of Connecticut (2016) and Courtney has been featured as a historian and medium on Travel Channel’s Portals to Hell and as a medium on Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures. She hosts paranormal investigations and historical site fundraisers annually. Courtney loves spending time with her husband\, Marty\, her loving pets\, her sisters and wee niece & goddaughter. She is a sucker for a good period drama or true crime documentary and in free time can be found listening to classic rock or 90’s pop and watching and obsessing over Outlander or Vikings.

SUMMARY:Paul Dunion (Wisdom: Apprenticing to the Unknown and Befriending Fate) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Paul Dunion for the new book\, Apprenticing to the Unknown and Befriending Fate.

But Victor disappears in a rough-stuff way\, and when he doesn’t show up at his mom’s to light the Hanukkah candles\, she hires Chet and Bernie to find him. \nThey soon discover that Victor’s client has also vanished. The trail leads to the ruins of a mission called Nuestra Señora de los Saguaros\, dating back to the earliest Spanish explorers. Some very dangerous people are interested in the old mission. Does some dusty archive hold the secret of a previously unknown art treasure\, possibly buried for centuries? What does the Flight into Egypt—when Mary\, Joseph and the baby Jesus fled Herod—have to do with saguaros\, the Sonoran desert cactus? \nNo one is better than Chet at nosing out buried secrets\, but before he can\, he and Bernie are forced to take flight themselves\, chased through a Christmas Eve blizzard by a murderous foe who loves art all too much. \nAbout Spencer Quinn\nSpencer Quinn is the pen name for Peter Abrahams\, the Edgar-winning\, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Chet and Bernie mystery series\, as well as the #1 New York Times bestselling Bowser and Birdie series for middle-grade readers. SUMMARY:Read of The Day with emily m. danforth (Plain Bad Heroines) at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a Read of The Day author talk and Q&A with emily m. danforth for the paperback release of Plain Bad Heroines. danforth will be in conversation with Rick Koster\, arts & culture writer for The Day. Read of The Day is an event partnership series brought to you by Bank Square Books and The Day. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nThe award-winning author of The Miseducation of Cameron Post makes her adult debut with this highly imaginative and original horror-comedy centered around a cursed New England boarding school for girls—a wickedly whimsical celebration of the art of storytelling\, sapphic love\, and the rebellious female spirit. \n“A delectable brew of gothic horror and Hollywood satire . . . deliciously ghoulish.” —Ron Charles\, Washington Post \nOur story begins in 1902\, at the Brookhants School for Girls. Flo and Clara\, two impressionable students\, are obsessed with each other and with a daring young writer named Mary MacLane\, the author of a scandalous bestselling memoir. To show their devotion to Mary\, the girls establish their own private club and call it the Plain Bad Heroine Society. They meet in secret in a nearby apple orchard\, the setting of their wildest happiness and\, ultimately\, of their macabre deaths. This is where their bodies are later discovered with a copy of Mary’s book splayed beside them\, the victims of a swarm of stinging\, angry yellow jackets. Less than five years later\, the Brookhants School for Girls closes its doors forever—but not before three more people mysteriously die on the property\, each in a most troubling way. \nOver a century later\, the now abandoned and crumbling Brookhants is back in the news when wunderkind writer Merritt Emmons publishes a breakout book celebrating the queer\, feminist history surrounding the “haunted and cursed” Gilded Age institution. Her bestselling book inspires a controversial horror film adaptation starring celebrity actor and lesbian it girl Harper Harper playing the ill-fated heroine Flo\, opposite B-list actress and former child star Audrey Wells as Clara. But as Brookhants opens its gates once again\, and our three modern heroines arrive on set to begin filming\, past and present become grimly entangled—or perhaps just grimly exploited—and soon it’s impossible to tell where the curse leaves off and Hollywood begins. \nA story within a story within a story and featuring black-and-white period-inspired illustrations\, Plain Bad Heroines is a devilishly haunting\, modern masterwork of metafiction that manages to combine the ghostly sensibility of Sarah Waters with the dark imagination of Marisha Pessl and the sharp humor and incisive social commentary of Curtis Sittenfeld into one laugh-out-loud funny\, spellbinding\, and wonderfully luxuriant read. \nAbout emily m. danforth\nemily m. danforth is the author of the highly acclaimed young adult novel The Miseducation of Cameron Post. She has an MFA in fiction from the University of Montana and a PhD in English from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She lives with her wife and two terrible dogs in Rhode Island. Plain Bad Heroines is her first adult novel.

SUMMARY:Terence Hawkins (Rage of Achilles) Author Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a weekend book signing with Terence Hawkins for the release of the new book Rage of Achilles. \nAbout the Book\nIn his first book\, The Rage of Achilles\, Terence Hawkins imagines an Iliad that really happened. Informed by the brutal realities of Bronze Age warfare and Julian Jaynes’ theory of the bicameral mind–now a basis for HBO’s Westworld–the novel depicts real men and women struggling in the end of a decade-long war\, their gods dwindling into hallucinations and half-heard commands as the modern consciousness is suddenly and painfully born. Emily Hauser\, author of For the Most Beautiful\, said: “Terence Hawkins’ ‘The Rage of Achilles’ . . . is Greek myth red in tooth and claw. Visceral and to-the-point\, it grabs you and doesn’t let go.” Tom Perrotta\, author of Little Children and The Leftovers\, called it “a rare thing–a genuinely fresh take on a classic text.” \nAbout Terence Hawkins\nTerence Hawkins grew up in a small town in southwestern Pennsylvania. His home county\, which the state police call Fayette Nam\, is the setting for Philipp Meyer’s American Rust and the original Night of the Living Dead. His grandfathers and several uncles were coal miners. He graduated from Yale\, where he was publisher of the Yale Daily News. He attended the University of Wisconsin Law School and returned to New Haven in 1985 to practice as a trial lawyer. \nIn 2011\, Hawkins became the founding Director of the Yale Writers’ Conference\, which he ran until 2015. In 2014\, he started the Company of Writers\, which offers workshops and manuscript services to writers at all levels of experience. \nThe Rage of Achilles is Hawkins’ first novel.

SUMMARY:Bank Square Books: Heather Webb (Three Words for Goodbye) Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Heather Webb and Hazel Gaynor for the release of the new book Three Words for Goodbye. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\n“From Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb\, the bestselling authors of Meet Me in Monaco comes a coming-of-age novel set in pre-WWII Europe\, perfect for fans of Jennifer Robson\, Beatriz Williams\, and Kate Quinn. \nThree cities\, two sisters\, one chance to correct the past . . . \nNew York\, 1937: When estranged sisters Clara and Madeleine Sommers learn their grandmother is dying\, they agree to fulfill her last wish: to travel across Europe—together. They are to deliver three letters\, in which Violet will say goodbye to those she hasn’t seen since traveling to Europe forty years earlier; a journey inspired by famed reporter\, Nellie Bly. \nClara\, ever-dutiful\, sees the trip as an inconvenient detour before her wedding to millionaire Charles Hancock\, but it’s also a chance to embrace her love of art. Budding journalist Madeleine relishes the opportunity to develop her ambitions to report on the growing threat of Hitler’s Nazi party and Mussolini’s control in Italy. \nConstantly at odds with each other as they explore the luxurious Queen Mary\, the Orient Express\, and the sights of Paris and Venice\,\, Clara and Madeleine wonder if they can fulfil Violet’s wish\, until a shocking truth about their family brings them closer together. But as they reach Vienna to deliver the final letter\, old grudges threaten their reconciliation again. SUMMARY:Vanessa Veselka presents THE GREAT OFFSHORE GROUNDS
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present a virtual author talk and Q&A with Vanessa Veselka\, author of The Great Offshore Grounds. This event is free and open to the public\, but you will need to register to join the Crowdcast Stream. \nAbout the Book\nA wildly original\, cross-country novel that subverts a long tradition of family narratives and casts new light on the mythologies–national\, individual\, and collective–that drive and define us. \nOn the day of their estranged father’s wedding\, half sisters Cheyenne and Livy set off to claim their inheritance. It’s been years since the two have seen each other. Cheyenne is newly back in Seattle\, crashing with Livy after a failed marriage and a series of dead ends. Livy works refinishing boats\, her resentment against her freeloading sister growing as she tamps down dreams of fishing off the coast of Alaska. But the promise of a shot at financial security brings the two together to claim what’s theirs. Except\, instead of money\, what their father gives them is information–a name–which both reveals a stunning family secret and compels them to come to grips with it. In the face of their new reality\, the sisters and their adopted brother each set out on journeys that will test their faith in one another\, as well as their definitions of freedom. \nMoving from Seattle’s underground to the docks of the Far North\, from the hideaways of the southern swamps to the storied reaches of the Great Offshore Grounds\, Vanessa Veselka spins a tale with boundless verve\, linguistic vitality\, and undeniable tenderness. \nAbout the Author\nVANESSA VESELKA is the author of the novel Zazen\, which won the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize. Her short stories have appeared in Tin House and ZYZZYVA\, and her nonfiction in GQ\, The Atlantic\, Smithsonian\, The Atavist\, and was included in Best American Essays and the anthology Bitchfest: Ten Years of Cultural Criticism. She has been\, at various times\, a teenage runaway\, a sex worker\, a union organizer\, an independent record label owner\, a train hopper\, a waitress\, and a mother.
