SUMMARY:Carol Barrios (Mahala) Weekend Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a weekend book signing with Carol Barrios for her book Mahala. \nAbout the Book \nHistorical fiction meets family saga in this sweeping Caribbean tale perfect for fans of Jamaica Kincaid\, Wide Sargasso Sea\, and The Island of Missing Trees. \nSt. Vincent\, British West Indies\, 1900 \nA woman born before her time\, Mahala was always a maverick. Adopted by her mother’s best friend and raised next door to her biological siblings\, she grows up with the generational challenges of not one\, but two families of Indian descent navigating colonial Caribbean society. From a young age\, Mahala knows the plan all four parents have set for her future: leave school\, marry well\, run a household\, plan her own future daughters’ weddings. But she believes fiercely there must be more to life than this Caribbean island and its restrictive customs. \nSeeking to control her own destiny\, Mahala must decide if fleeing her homeland and alienating herself from her family is worth the freedom she most desperately wants. If she remains\, she will need to agree to a marriage—and a man—arranged by her family and abandon her dream of independence. If she goes\, escaping to New York and its gleaming opportunities\, her innate intelligence and confidence may have to be enough for her to build the life she’s always dreamed of—a life of integrity\, strength\, and love of her own choosing. \nMahala is a page-turning\, coming-of-age story about women’s rights\, family expectations\, and the courage to forge your own path in a world determined to limit your choices. \nAbout the Author \nCarol Marques Barrios is a graduate of the University of Connecticut\, where she earned both her Bachelor of Science in marketing and Master of Business Administration. She lives with her husband and three daughters in Fairfield\, Connecticut. Mahala is her first novel. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Edgar Garcia (Cantares) James Merrill Fellow Reading
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The James Merrill House present an author talk and reading with fellow\, Edgar Garcia. \nRegister \nAbout the Book \nPoems and micro-essays intertwine in this poetically attuned adaptation of the mid-sixteenth century Nahuatl-language Cantares Mexicanos \nCantares is a multipart engagement with the poetics and history of the colonial and Indigenous Americas\, oscillating between poetry and essay in a structure of repetitions derived from Mesoamerican poetics. Edgar Garcia reimagines the Cantares Mexicanos\, a sixteenth-century anthology of Nahuatl songs from Central Mexico\, and brings these songs to life not just as historical documents\, but as music\, to give presence of thought to their historical layers and complexities. His adaptations evoke the sound and texture of the sixteenth century\, blending Indigenous and Baroque traditions\, exploring themes of translation\, adaptation\, race\, and historical memory. The collection moves between poetry and scholarship—between poems and micro-essays. The essays provide commentary and historical context about the colonial soundscape of Central Mexico. At the same time\, the poems emphasize the songs’ sonic\, spiritual\, and poetic dimensions. \nThe Cantares emerge from a time of cultural collision—after the arrival of the Castilians but still rooted in older\, Indigenous worldviews. These songs are not nostalgic or idealized; they reflect crisis\, survival\, and creativity. Garcia’s work draws inspiration from the Popol Vuh\, the K’iche’ Maya creation story\, which begins in colonial darkness and still insists on the possibility of light. Through these adaptations\, Cantares becomes a meditation on history\, imagination\, and the power of art to endure and create in the face of loss. \nAbout the Author \nEdgar Garcia is a poet and scholar of the hemispheric cultures of the Americas. He is the author of Skins of Columbus: A Dream Ethnography (Fence Books\, 2019); Signs of the Americas: A Poetics of Pictography\, Hieroglyphs\, and Khipu (University of Chicago Press\, 2020); Infinite Regress (collaborative work with Eamon Ore-Giron\, Bom Dia Books\, 2021); Emergency: Reading the Popol Vuh in a Time of Crisis (University of Chicago Press\, 2022); and Cantares (Wesleyan University Press\, 2026). He is faculty in the department of English at the University of Chicago where he is also affiliated with the Program in Creative Writing.

SUMMARY:Jennifer Clarvoe (Piano Piano) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Jennifer Clarvoe for her book\, Piano Piano. \nAbout the Book \nIn Piano Piano\, Clarvoe crafts a luminous meditation on time\, loss\, and the enduring power of art to transform grief into grace. These poems move with the deliberate tempo their title suggests – piano piano\, slowly\, gently – through landscapes both intimate and archaeological\, from a father’s final breaths to ancient curse tablets unearthed in Turkish soil. With exquisite attention to craft\, Clarvoe weaves together the personal and the timeless: a bee working alongside the poet at her window\, fragments of pottery that carry the “added failure” of ancient repairs\, and Lumière’s first flickering films. Her voice finds profound beauty in broken things – fibroid infarctions become odes\, torn fieldbook pages become elegies. This collection reveals how memory and art preserve what matters most: the music falling “slantwise / like the gold ray / of the Annunciation” that accompanied a father’s final season. Piano Piano is a masterwork of formal innovation and emotional precision. \nAbout the Author \nJennifer Clarvoe is the author of two books of poetry: Invisible Tender (Fordham\, 2000)\, and Counter-Amores (University of Chicago\, 2011). Her awards and fellowships include the Kate Tufts Prize\, the Poets Out Loud Prize for Invisible Tender\, a fellowship from the Sewanee Writers Conference\, a residency at the James Merrill House\, and the Rome Prize in Literature. She taught literature and creative writing at Kenyon College for many years. She lives in Somerville\, MA\, with her husband\, Tony Sigel. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Gail MacDonald (Abolitionists of the Northeast) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Gail MacDonald for her book\, Abolitionists of the Northeast: Black Leaders in the Antislavery Movement. \nRegister \nAbout the Book \nAbolitionists of the Northeast profiles the little-known yet historically prolific Black figures who actively participated in the abolitionist movement in America. The movement\, which began in the 1820s in Northeastern America\, was about ending slavery in the United States.\nHistory books have long emphasized the lives and work of Harriet Tubman\, Frederick Douglass\, and Thomas Garrett\, but it’s no secret that the most influential Black advocates are missing from the pages of our textbooks. This book offers intimate profiles of 29 Black abolitionists in the Northeast along with historical black and white photographs that give readers a full picture of who these people were\, the work they did to combat the nation’s greatest sin\, and how their legacy has lived on.\nFrom the underrated to the overlooked\, Abolitionists of the Northeast educates readers on the most influential advocates in the earliest beginnings of the United States’ anti-slavery movement. \nAbout the Author \nGail B. MacDonald is a recently retired University of Connecticut journalism professor; a veteran\, award-winning journalist and the author of three history books. She regularly leads history-themed tours for Uncovering New London; One Story at a Time and at the historic Cedar Grove Cemetery in New London and formerly was a docent and developer of history tours for the Thames River Heritage Park. She is president of the Rotary Club of New London\, through which she is active in community service. She lives in New London.

SUMMARY:David Borges (UConn Basketball: An Illustrated Timeline) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with David Borges for the book\, UConn Basketball: An Illustrated Timeline. \nRSVP \nAbout the Book \nWith six national championships under three different head coaches in one 26-year span\, UConn basketball has been the most successful men’s program of the 21st century. No program has won more national titles in that span. No program has won more Big East championships\, even though the Huskies were out of the league for seven seasons. And when UConn won back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024\, it became the first program to repeat in 17 years\, and just the third to do so since the UCLA dynasties of the late 1960s/early 1970s. UConn has spawned a Hall of Fame player in Ray Allen and a coach in Jim Calhoun. No doubt\, Dan Hurley will be enshrined in Springfield someday\, as well. Since Calhoun took over the program in 1986\, the Huskies have had 17 NBA Draft lottery picks\, 24 first-round selections and 40 overall . . . and counting. UConn’s success has shown no signs of slowing down under Hurley. But Husky history dates back much further. From its time as a regional power in the Yankee Conference to its days of dominance in the Big East\, UConn has had remarkable success-sprinkled in with the occasional spectacular failure. All the championship teams\, All-American players\, dynamic personalities\, and iconic games and moments that have helped turned little Storrs\, Connecticut\, into The Basketball Capital of the Word are chronicled in this book by longtime UConn men’s basketball beat writer David Borges. \nAbout the Author \nDavid Borges has covered the UConn men’s basketball team as a beat writer for the New Haven Register and Hearst Connecticut Media since 2007. In that span\, he’s covered four national championships and five Final Four teams. Prior to that\, he covered the 2004 Boston Red Sox team that snapped an 86-year World Series championship drought. Borges\, a Rhode Island native who has lived in Connecticut for nearly two decades with his wife and two children\, has won multiple awards covering UConn\, including the National Sports Media Association’s Connecticut Sportswriter of the Year in 2019.

Jimmy Lettner\, a convicted drug-trafficker who once lost a daughter in a narco-fueled car wreck\, runs Manhattan’s hottest nightspot\, Abattoir. Reformed by his time in prison\, all he wants is to run a clean club. Jealous industry rivals will do anything to shut Abattoir down\, and the new mayor presses the NYPD to clean up the city’s darkest corners. As Jimmy’s troubles mount\, temptations from his past call to him. \nMeanwhile\, Ben Hopkins\, a straight-edge rookie cop on the hunt for a fast-track ticket to detective\, turns his attention to Abattoir. SUMMARY:James Benn (The Ninth Circle) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with James Benn for the book\, The Ninth Circle. \nRegister \nAbout the Book \nTo solve a double murder in Cuba\, US Army Captain Billy Boyle will need to build unlikely alliances with Havana’s underworld and British intelligence\, including Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming\, whose naval wartime service would later inspire the James Bond novels. \nThis installment of James R. Benn’s fan-favorite\, critically-acclaimed WWII mystery series marks 20 years of Billy Boyle\, an Irish American cop from Boston thrust onto the staff of his “uncle” Ike Eisenhower for sensitive overseas military investigations. \nJanuary\, 1945: If US Army Captain Billy Boyle thinks a summons to Havana will give him a chance to sip a cold Hatuey under the Caribbean sun\, the fantasy is dead on arrival. Within hours of landing\, Billy and his partner-in-crime-solving\, Lieutenant Piotr Kazimierz\, are assigned to investigate the murder of a Navy intelligence officer. But as the men wait for an informant at a beachside bar\, a bomb goes off\, and they narrowly escape with their lives. Then the informant—a Cuban taxi driver named Hector Díaz—is found dead outside his apartment. What did Hector know? And who was so desperate to silence him? \nThrust into a double-murder investigation\, Billy and Kaz team up with the brass at the British Legation in Havana\, including none other than Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming\, to gather intel from sources inside Havana’s criminal underworld. Their search takes them from Havana’s Chinatown to the Gran Casino Nacional\, where notorious gangster Meyer Lansky offers his services if it means defeating the suspected common enemy—the Sicherheitsdienst\, the intelligence wing of the Nazi military—and finding out what sort of intelligence they are so hell-bent on keeping top-secret at this late stage in the war. \nAbout the Author \nJames R. Benn is the author of the Billy Boyle World War II mysteries. The debut\, Billy Boyle\, was selected as a Top Five Book of the Year by Book Sense and was a Dilys Award nominee\, A Blind Goddess was longlisted for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award\, The Rest Is Silence was a Barry Award nominee\, and The Devouring was a Macavity Award nominee. Benn\, a former librarian\, lives on the Gulf Coast of Florida with his wife\, Deborah Mandel.

SUMMARY:Ian A. Lane (Pain\, Power & Pride) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Ian A. Lane for the book\, Pain\, Power & Pride: Evidence-Based Strategies for Living Fully Despite Persistent Pain. \nRegister \nAbout the Book \nLiving with persistent pain can be isolating and disempowering\, especially when personal identity\, stigma\, and healthcare biases change how pain is experienced and treated for some people. Pain\, Power\, and Pride is a science-driven\, affirming guide to reclaiming agency and living fully despite chronic pain. \nWritten by nursing epidemiologist and pain scientist\, Dr. Ian A. Lane\, this book integrates contemporary pain science with LGBTQ+ health equity\, exploring how bio-\, psycho- and social contexts intersect to influence pain experiences. Rather than offering quick fixes\, it provides practical\, evidence-based strategies for understanding pain self-management\, navigating healthcare visits\, strengthening communication\, and building sustainable coping and self-regulatory skills. \nDesigned for queer people living with pain\, their families and chosen families\, and the clinicians who care for them\, Pain\, Power\, and Pride bridges research and real-world application. Grounded in science and centered on inclusion\, this book reframes pain as a complex human experience deserving of respect and effective\, personalized support. \nPain does not define you. Agency\, knowledge\, and pride can help guide the way forward. \nAbout the Author \nIan A. Lane is a nursing epidemiologist and clinical pain scientist whose research focuses on the causes and consequences of pain and behavioral health conditions among queer young people. He is one of a small number of researchers worldwide dedicated to this area of study and is the author of Pain\, Power & Pride: Evidence-Based Strategies for Living Fully Despite Persistent Pain\, the first and only available book devoted exclusively to pain disparities affecting LGBT people and what might be done about them. In addition to his scholarship\, Dr. Lane serves as an academic nurse leader in Rhode Island\, with joint appointments at Brown University and Providence College. Beyond his academic work\, he enjoys spending time with his husband\, Zachary\, and training their two Mini Hippo Dogs\, Finn & Rhody.

SUMMARY:Elena Imbimbo (Disturbing the Curse) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Elena Imbimbo for her book\, Disturbing the Curse. Elena will be in conversation with J.L. Willow \nRegister \nAbout the Book \nAlice Carta went to Canada to leave her bad memories of London behind for good. An archaeologist by trade\, she chose a job in a library in a tiny\, remote town in Nova Scotia. A peaceful\, sleepy village with a view of the bay\, in which she could process difficult emotions without anyone bothering her. She adopted a companion\, a German Shepherd named Boldy\, and settled in for a reclusive chapter in her life. \nThen she found the body. Boldy discovers a man’s body half-buried in the snow\, which pulls Alice into close relationship with the local Chief Constable’s office. Against everything in her\, Alice gets swept into a baffling whirlwind of intrigue\, arson\, deception and murder. When Philip\, her friend and co-conspirator from London shows up unexpectedly\, the two find themselves trying to unravel a case of stolen artifacts\, hidden identities and a decades-old curse. \nA secret bunker in the library holds clues to a World War II alliance between two local men–long dead–which may prove to be at the core of all the mystery. Alice and Philip play their own cards\, while pretending to be fully on board with law enforcement\, and also keeping close to their civilian contacts. When it seems that everyone in the town of Steep Ridge might be complicit\, the pair rush to solve the murders before they join the body count. \nAbout the Author \nElena is a researcher and analyst specializing in conflict prevention and resolution. She holds a degree in Russian Language and Literature as well as an MA in International Journalism. She is also a writer and serves as co-executive director of a local CERT\, a volunteer organization that supports emergency services. Born and raised in Italy\, Elena now lives in the United States with her husband and children. \nAbout J.L. Willow \nJ. L. Willow is the author of several works including the Amazon bestselling novel Missing Her. She graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering and a minor in engineering management. While she spends her days working in her field of study\, her nights are spent dreaming up new thrilling (and often horrifying)\ntales.

SUMMARY:Ange Mlinko (Foxglovewise) James Merrill Fellow Reading
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The James Merrill House present an author talk and reading with fellow\, Ange Mlinko. \nRegister \nAbout the Book \nAnge Mlinko\, whose poetry is “irresistible” (Los Angeles Review of Books)\, opens our perception of other lives\, or lives unlived. \nFoxglovewise is\, at its core\, a response to the singular experience of the loss of one’s parents. It begins at an Eastern Orthodox Epiphany ritual in Florida and ends in a cemetery in Los Angeles. Yet\, as with Ange Mlinko’s other books of poetry\, the collection uses geography as a trope for the ways in which we try to map out our lives and make them legible\, even as poetry\, music\, and paintings suggest that much of what happens\, or matters\, to us is “not on the maps” (not to mention “the apps”). Whether it’s Europa borne over the waves\, or gravestones bearing aliases rather than birth names\, or books bequeathed to us by relatives in languages we can’t read\, we live “up in the air” or “on the wing” and not in fixed coordinates. \nMlinko’s poetry is suffused with wit\, erudition\, beauty\, and boundless energy. As Declan Ryan wrote of her work in The Times Literary Supplement\, “A reader could be merely dazzled by all this surface stylishness . . . but then they would miss the heart beneath it all.” Foxglovewise is a direct line to the author’s heart. \nAbout the Author \nAnge Mlinko is the author of seven books of poetry\, most recently Foxglovewise\, and a book of lyric criticism\, Difficult Ornaments: Florida and the Poets. A new chapbook\, Darkroom\, is available from Foolscap Press in Nashville. She is a frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books and The London Review of Books\, and has received the Randall Jarrell Award in Criticism as well as the Frederick Bock Prize from the Poetry Foundation\, a Guggenheim Fellowship\, and residencies at Hawthornden Castle and Civitella Ranieri. She has taught workshops at the Bread Loaf Writers Conference and the Key West Literary Seminars\, and currently teaches poetry at the University of Florida\, where she directs the MFA program.

SUMMARY:Brittany Perham (Executrix) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Brittany Perham for her book\, Executrix. \nAbout the Book \nAn innovative memoir that questions narrative structure and the nature of memory itself while exploring the complexity of familial relationships \nExecutrix begins with a mystery: Why would the author’s father\, from whom she had been estranged for more than a decade\, change his will in the weeks before his death to make her the executor of his estate? Executrix charts the process of sorting out the business of this indebted estate using the language of real estate foreclosure\, income tax audits\, and medical records. The executor transforms the disjointed details of a life into a tidy financial narrative that meets the demands of claimants; the writer transforms the disjointed details of a life into a story that meets the demands of memory. Through this twin accounting\, Perham asks the big questions: What are the implications of being the child of an alcoholic? How do we reconcile memories that are fragmented\, elided\, or nonexistent? And what does it mean to write true “nonfiction”? With surprising humor\, real tenderness\, and\, above all\, a daring formal inventiveness\, Executrix launches a critical investigation into family stories and secrets\, and the genre of memoir itself. \nAbout the Author \nBrittany Perham is the author of Double Portrait\, which received the Barnard Women Poets Prize; The Curiosities; and\, with Kim Addonizio\, the collaborative word/art project The Night Could Go in Either Direction. Her poetry\, fiction\, and nonfiction appear in Poetry\, Prairie Schooner\, Gulf Coast\, Poetry Society of America\, The San Francisco Chronicle\, and elsewhere. Perham’s work has received support from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation\, the Hemingway House\, the James Merrill House Foundation\, Vermont Studio Center\, the Wallace Stegner Fellowship Program\, and Yaddo. She lives in San Francisco. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:John Mills (The Narrative of Primus) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and reading with John Mills for the book\, The Narrative of Primus. \nRegister \nAbout the Book \nThe Narrative of Primus uncovers the remarkable\, nearly forgotten story of a ten-year-old boy taken from his mother’s bedside in West Africa and forced aboard a slave ship bound for America. That boy\, Primus\, survived the Middle Passage\, endured decades of enslavement in colonial Connecticut\, raised a family\, and through faith\, resilience\, and grace\, laid a foundation that would ripple across generations. \nDrawing on rarely cited historical sources including an embedded first-person narrative hidden since 1824 in the writings of Lydia Sigourney\, John Mills reveals Primus as more than a footnote to slavery or a name in a ledger. He restores him as a father\, a church member\, a scholar of scripture\, a community figure\, and a man whose voice still echoes across three centuries. \nThrough meticulous archival research\, Mills traces the lives of Primus’s descendants from the Revolutionary War\, where his son Job fought for American independence while enslaved\, through the Civil War\, where Sgt. Daniel Stanley Lathrop served with the famed 29th Connecticut Colored Infantry\, and into the twentieth century\, where the lineage continued to serve in both World Wars and National Guard militias shut out of state support. \nPart genealogy\, part social history\, and part personal journey\, The Narrative of Primus blends historical storytelling with the author’s lived experience as a Black American and direct descendant of enslaved ancestors. Mills interrogates myths surrounding American liberty\, challenges long-held racial narratives\, and re-centers Black families whose sacrifices helped shape the nation. \nAbout the Author \nJohn Mills is a dedicated genealogist and president of the Alex Breanne Corporation\, a Connecticut-based non-profit focused on research into the formerly enslaved. John is known for his meticulous research and deep passion for uncovering family histories. With years of experience\, he has helped many individuals uncover ancestral connections. His commitment to accuracy and detail has earned him a reputation as a trusted expert in genealogical circles. His notable contributions to the field have garnered recognition\, including an exposé in The Washington Post\, an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show”\, and multiple interviews with famed Civil Rights attorney Areva Martin. John has a strong interest in uncovering the stories of the formerly enslaved\, volunteering his skills in service to others. Beyond his on-the-ground research\, John actively shares his knowledge through seminars and workshops. His engaging discussions have helped raise awareness about genealogy and its role in shaping personal and cultural identities.

When not writing\, she’s most likely reading or dreaming about her next vacation. \nAbout Not Another Christmas Movie \nWhen Annie Meyers wakes up in a made-for-TV Christmas movie starring her ex-situationship and a now not-so-dorky childhood neighbor\, her plans to swear off love—and Christmas—begin to unravel. \nPerfect for fans of A Merry Little Meet Cute\, this holiday rom-com will enchant readers who have a love-hate relationship with Christmas movies. \nThirty-something Annie Meyers is having a rough year. Her situationship with the noncommittal Chris fizzled out\, and her best friend’s impending engagement is the final crunch of the candy cane. Her solution: to spend the holiday slugging boxed rosé and ignoring the rest of the world. \nThat is\, until she falls asleep and wakes up in her worst nightmare: a made-for-TV Christmas movie version of her quaint hometown. To make matters worse\, Chris is now the town’s hunky widower and owner of a Christmas tree farm. But Annie isn’t trapped alone: Her dorky childhood neighbor\, Nick\, is here too. Only\, he’s not quite as dorky as she remembers. \nAfter some mild panic\, Annie and Nick realize their escape hinges on playing into classic rom-com tropes. The plan is simple: Annie will woo Chris—the now “perfect boyfriend”—and Nick\, his childhood sweetheart\, Bailey. \nBut after holiday hoedowns\, ice-skating dates\, and cookie-baking montages\, Annie begins to wonder if the real magic of Christmas—and love—is much closer to home. \nAbout Ashley Cowan \nAshley Cowan lives in Simsbury\, Connecticut\, where she wrangles a circus that includes one husband\, three daughters\, two rescue cats\, and two rescue dogs. A graduate of Roger Williams University\, she moved to New York City as a starving artist and then to San Francisco\, where she became a moderately hungry artist\, acting\, writing\, directing\, and enjoying many burritos before returning to New England. \nAshley is a published playwright\, with work featured in The Applause Acting Series: 25 10-Minute Plays for Teens\, and her plays have been staged everywhere from San Francisco theaters (and bars moonlighting as theaters) to Texas middle schools and community centers across the tri-state area.
