SUMMARY:Leah Angstman (Out Front the Following Sea) Author Talk and Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents Leah Angstman discussing the book Out Front the Following Sea. This event will be moderated by Nancy Burns-Fusaro from the Westerly Sun. \nAbout the Book\nOut Front the Following Sea is a historical epic of one woman’s survival in a time when the wilderness is still wild\, heresy is publicly punishable\, and being independent is worse than scorned—it is a death sentence. At the onset of King William’s War between French and English settlers in 1689 New England\, Ruth Miner is accused of witchcraft for the murder of her parents and must flee the brutality of her town. She stows away on the ship of the only other person who knows her innocence: an audacious sailor—Owen—bound to her by years of attraction\, friendship\, and shared secrets. But when Owen’s French ancestry finds him at odds with a violent English commander\, the turmoil becomes life-or-death for the sailor\, the headstrong Ruth\, and the cast of Quakers\, Pequot Indians\, soldiers\, highwaymen\, and townsfolk dragged into the fray. Now Ruth must choose between sending Owen to the gallows or keeping her own neck from the noose. \nAbout the Author\nLeah Angstman is a historian and transplanted Michigander. Her writing has been a finalist for the Saluda River Prize\, Cowles Book Prize\, Able Muse Book Award\, Bevel Summers Fiction Prize\, and Chaucer Book Award\, and has appeared in Publishers Weekly\, L.A. SUMMARY:Crystal Maldonado (No Filter and Other Lies) In Conversation with e.E. Charlton-Trujillo Virtual Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present a virtual author talk and Q&A with Crystal Maldonado for the new book\, No Filter and Other Lies. Crystal will be in conversation with author\, e.E. Charlton-Trujillo. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nYou should know\, right now\, that I’m a liar. \nThey’re usually little lies. Tiny lies. Baby lies. Not so much lies as lie adjacent. \nBut they’re still lies. \nTwenty one-year-old Max Monroe has it all: beauty\, friends\, and a glittering life filled with adventure. With tons of followers on Instagram\, her picture-perfect existence seems eminently enviable. \nExcept it’s all fake. \nMax is actually 17-year-old Kat Sanchez\, a quiet and sarcastic teenager living in drab Bakersfield\, California. Nothing glamorous in her existence—just sprawl\, bad house parties\, a crap school year\, and the awkwardness of dealing with her best friend Hari’s unrequited love. \nBut while Kat’s life is far from perfect\, she thrives as Max: doling out advice\, sharing beautiful photos\, networking with famous influencers\, even making a real friend in a follower named Elena. The closer Elena and “Max” get—texting\, Snapping\, and even calling—the more Kat feels she has to keep up the façade. \nBut when one of Max’s posts goes ultra-viral and gets back to the very person she’s been stealing photos from\, her entire world – real and fake — comes crashing down around her. She has to figure out a way to get herself out of the huge web of lies she’s created without hurting the people she loves. \nBut it might already be too late. \nAbout Crystal Maldonado\nCrystal Maldonado is a young adult author with a lot of feelings. Her debut novel\, Fat Chance\, Charlie Vega\, is a 2021 New England Book Award winner\, a Cosmopolitan Best New Book\, and a POPSUGAR Best New YA Novel. Her next novel\, No Filter and Other Lies\, explores teenage life in the social media age—and the lies we tell to ourselves and others. By day\, Crystal works in higher ed marketing\, and by night\, a writer who loves Beyoncé\, shopping\, spending too much time on her phone\, and being extra. Her work has also been published in Latina\, BuzzFeed\, and the Hartford Courant. She lives in western Massachusetts with her husband\, daughter\, and dog. \nAbout e.E. Charlton-Trujillo\nMexican American author\, filmmaker and youth literary activist e.E. SUMMARY:Paul Dunion (Wisdom: Apprenticing to the Unknown and Befriending Fate) Author Talk at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Paul Dunion for the new book\, Wisdom: Apprenticing to the Unknown and Befriending Fate. \nAbout the Book\nIt may be time to let go of the naivete that our technological devices will magically reveal the nature of absolute truth\, or that some alluring formula will serve our need for immediate gratification and penetrate life’s mysteries. We seem to have forgotten that it is by the light of wisdom that we begin to understand who we are and make some sense of the journey we call life. \nWisdom – Apprenticing to the Unknown and Befriending Fate tells a story of what it means to apprentice to the unknown. It offers a strong plea – stop trying to get life right and allow life to get you right. \nSuch an allowance happens over time as the ego comes to know defeat and the illusion of its sovereignty. The wisdom path must be walked with curiosity and honesty\, letting ourselves admit that we are employing some form of bypass that can allegedly circumvent life’s unpredictability and insecurity. Apprentices become increasingly informed by letting go of what is out of their control and learning to find the courage to address what is in their control. The reader learns what it means to remain a student of life\, less enamored with being impressive\, and as the need to perform and achieve atrophy\, gains a devout receptivity to all that fate desires to teach. Wisdom is a verb. It is the apprenticing in a constant state of inquiry. \nAbout Paul Dunion\nOften described as an eclectic mystic\, Paul’s tagline is “making peace with mystery.” His legacy of being a Celtic storyteller has gifted him as a writer and muse. He brings his 40-year background as a psychological healer and philosopher to examining in his blogs and books the kinds of life choices that can yield the wisdom path. \nHe has received high praise from Writers Digest Self-Published Book Awards for his previous book Seekers as well as a Reader’s Favorite 5-Star Review for his newly-released Wisdom\, focusing on what it means to see life as offering an Initiation\, guiding and challenging us to find our way to our own depths.

SUMMARY:Thomas Bardenwerper (Mona Passage) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Thomas Bardenwerper for the new book\, Mona Passage. \nAbout the Book\nMona Passage is the story of two neighbors in San Juan\, Puerto Rico: Galán Betances\, a Cuban emigrant\, and Pat McAllister\, a young Coast Guard officer. During long evenings spent together talking on their Calle Luna rooftop\, a deep friendship develops based on shared traumas and a common desire to heal. When Galán learns that his sister\, Gabriela\, is going to be committed to a mental health facility in Cuba\, he plans her escape to Puerto Rico. Pat\, whose Coast Guard cutter patrols the Mona Passage for drug traffickers and migrants\, warns Galán that such a journey will be treacherous—perhaps fatal. Aware of the dangers but determined for Gabriela to live a full life\, Galán hands over all the money he has to a Dominican smuggler based out of a San Juan nightclub\, and Gabriela begins her terrifying journey. \nKnowing that his cutter may be all that separates Galán and Gabriela—and haunted by the human suffering he has witnessed at sea—Pat must decide. Will he remain true to his oath\, as his older brother had done in Iraq? Or will he risk his own future—and perhaps his freedom—for his closest friend? \nOn a moonless night\, two armed vessels converge in the Mona Passage\, and three lives change forever. \nAbout Thomas Bardenwerper\nThomas “Buddy” Bardenwerper served five years in the US Coast Guard aboard cutters homeported in Maine and Puerto Rico. He participated in humanitarian and law enforcement missions from the Gulf of Maine to the Caribbean Basin. After being medically retired for Type 1 diabetes in 2018\, Bardenwerper began a joint degree program at Harvard Law School and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Upon graduation in 2022\, Bardenwerper will be moving to Miami with his wife and daughter. “Mona Passage” is his first novel.

SUMMARY:Andrea Steele (Zen: The Anatomy of the Perfect Crime) Author Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author signing with Andrea Steele for the new book\, Zen: The Anatomy of the Perfect Crime. \nAbout the Book\nSwiss equestrian William “Zen” Griegg skyrockets to the top of the European show jumping circuit. As he sets his sights on the 2000 Olympic Games\, his beloved horse Tiger is abducted en route to a competition in the United States.\nZen’s father\, Sigmund Griegg\, again teams with American Alana Eastwood to solve an international mystery that leads them from a secret tunnel in the Owl Mountains of Poland\, through the art galleries of Zürich\, to the Hamilton Farm Equestrian Center in Gladstone\, New Jersey. \nGriegg and Eastwood uncover an ingenious plot to pull off the perfect crime. The ransom for the safe return of the horse: Lost treasure from World War II that only a handful of people know to exist. \nAs the clock ticks to reunite Zen with Tiger in time to compete in the Olympic trials\, Griegg and Eastwood use the origins of social media to unnerve the abductors and unravel their complex crime.\nThe story’s fiery climax leaves readers to reflect that\, one day\, we all dine at a banquet table of past actions where karma dishes out our last meal. \nAdvanced Praise for Zen\n“Zen takes the reader on a perfect 20-meter circle of international equestrian intrigue… saddle up for a ride through worlds dangerous and delightful in Zen…” —L.A. Sokolowski\, The Original Equinista™\nFacebook * Instagram * LinkedIn * Twitter\n• • • • •\n“A full-bodied read that is delightfully mercurial and intriguing. SUMMARY:Courtney McInvale Reardon (Civil War Ghosts of Connecticut) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Courtney Mcinvale Reardon for the new book\, Civil War Ghosts of Connecticut. \nAbout the Book\nFollow the haunting tales of Connecticut’s role in America’s Civil War through the eyes of those who fought in it. From Generals Mansfield and Lyon to Privates Tarbox and Brooks\, discover the harrowing tales of grizzled soldiers – in this world and beyond – fighting against countrymen and brothers. Explore the tales of the segregated ranks like the Irish and Colored Regiments as well as the abolitionists and provisions suppliers\, including Harriet Beecher Stowe and Samuel Colt. The stories of these people’s lives carry on through the hauntings and ghost stories that now permeate throughout the countryside\, collected and retold by author\, tour guide\, and psychic medium Courtney McInvale who visited and researched countless battle sites\, prisons\, museums\, and historic homesteads to present this haunted history of Connecticut. More than just ghost stories told during the Victorian era – although some of those are certainly included – Civil War Ghosts of Connecticut paints a colorful\, but sobering\, landscape of the deadliest time in American history. \nAbout Courtney Mcinvale\nCourtney McInvale Reardon is the founder of Seaside Shadows based out of Mystic\, Connecticut and offering walking tours and boat tours throughout the southern New England region. She is a licensed tour guide\, published author and actual descendant of accused witches. She is a Connecticut native and Courtney spent 5 years in DC after completing her studies at Catholic University of America and the University College Dublin where she studied abroad\, majoring in International Relations. After earning her degree\, she worked for the FBI as an analyst — having been influenced by her time interning at NCIS for the Cold Case Homicide Unit– She then spent 2 years in Vermont working for Dept of Homeland Security and honing her investigative skills. Courtney also spent many months in Ireland in study and visiting\, a place rich with histories and hauntings alike! She avidly studies histories of Celtic cultures\, specifically Ireland and Scotland\, specializing in rebellions. Her love for rebellion history dates to the studies of the American Civil War that began in childhood. Her father\, a history major at the University of Georgia\, had Courtney memorize the names of Civil War Generals by photograph before she turned seven. She lost many ancestors to the Civil War on both sides and researching and writing about War between the States seemed to be her destiny. Courtney is an empathic spirit medium — able to feel\, see and communicate with spirits. She has frequently had experiences involving the paranormal. In Courtney’s childhood home in central Connecticut\, in a town called East Hampton numerous paranormal occurrences happened. The events were so extreme that the Warren family came to investigate and exorcise the house during her teenage years there. Due to her haunting past\, and ability to see and communicate with spirit\, she has always taken an interest in the unknown and has now put her sensitivities\, investigative skills\, love of history\, and writing aspirations to work. Courtney is also a realist amongst all things and believes no tour or book can be complete without corroborating information. Each book and tour she creates is inundated with historical facts to corroborate all the haunting occurrences surrounding the topic. This is Courtney’s third book for Arcadia Publishing and the History Press – the other two: Haunted Mystic (2014)\, Revolutionary War Ghosts of Connecticut (2016) and Courtney has been featured as a historian and medium on Travel Channel’s Portals to Hell and as a medium on Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures. She hosts paranormal investigations and historical site fundraisers annually. Courtney loves spending time with her husband\, Marty\, her loving pets\, her sisters and wee niece & goddaughter. She is a sucker for a good period drama or true crime documentary and in free time can be found listening to classic rock or 90’s pop and watching and obsessing over Outlander or Vikings.

SUMMARY:Andrea Pitzer (Icebound) in Conversation with Julian Sancton Virtual Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Andrea Pitzer for the new book\, Icebound. Andrea will be in conversation with author Julian Sancton. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nIn the bestselling tradition of Hampton Sides’s In the Kingdom of Ice\, a “gripping adventure tale” (The Boston Globe) recounting Dutch polar explorer William Barents’ three harrowing Arctic expeditions—the last of which resulted in a relentlessly challenging year-long fight for survival. \nThe human story has always been one of perseverance—often against remarkable odds. The most astonishing survival tale of all might be that of 16th-century Dutch explorer William Barents and his crew of sixteen\, who ventured farther north than any Europeans before and\, on their third polar exploration\, lost their ship off the frozen coast of Nova Zembla to unforgiving ice. The men would spend the next year fighting off ravenous polar bears\, gnawing hunger\, and endless winter. \nIn Icebound\, Andrea Pitzer masterfully combines a gripping tale of survival with a sweeping history of the great Age of Exploration—a time of hope\, adventure\, and seemingly unlimited geographic frontiers. At the story’s center is William Barents\, one of the 16th century’s greatest navigators whose larger-than-life ambitions and obsessive quest to chart a path through the deepest\, most remote regions of the Arctic ended in both tragedy and glory. Journalist Pitzer did extensive research\, learning how to use four-hundred-year-old navigation equipment\, setting out on three Arctic expeditions to retrace Barents’s steps\, and visiting replicas of Barents’s ship and cabin. \n“A resonant meditation on human ingenuity\, resilience\, and hope” (The New Yorker)\, Pitzer’s reenactment of Barents’s ill-fated journey shows us how the human body can function at twenty degrees below\, the history of mutiny\, the art of celestial navigation\, and the intricacies of building shelters. But above all\, it gives us a firsthand glimpse into the true nature of courage. \nAbout Andrea Pitzer\nAndrea Pitzer is the author of ICEBOUND: SHIPWRECKED AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD\, the story of William Barents’ three voyages to the Arctic in the 1590s. Published by Scribner in January 2021\, ICEBOUND was featured in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal and received a starred review from Booklist. Her second book\, ONE LONG NIGHT: A GLOBAL HISTORY OF CONCENTRATION CAMPS (Little\, Brown\, 2017)\, covers the wrenching story of mass civilian detention from the 1890s to the present. It received a starred review from Kirkus and was named a top history book of the year by Smithsonian Magazine. Her first book\, THE SECRET HISTORY OF VLADIMIR NABOKOV (Pegasus\, 2013)\, received starred reviews from Kirkus\, Booklist\, and Library Journal. \nAndrea’s writing has appeared many places in print and online\, from the Washington Post\, the New York Review of Books\, Outside\, the Daily Beast\, GQ\, Vox\, Slate\, and USA Today to Longreads\, Lapham’s Quarterly\, and McSweeney’s. She founded Nieman Storyboard\, the narrative nonfiction site of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. \nFind her on Twitter at @andreapitzer\, like her Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/andreapitzerauthor/\, and visit her website at http://www.andreapitzer.com. \nAbout Julian Sancton\nJulian Sancton has been an editor at Vanity Fair\, Esquire\, and Departures\, and written for such publications as The New Yorker\, Wired\, and Playboy. He has reported from every continent\, including Antarctica\, which he first visited while researching his book\, Madhouse at the End of the Earth.

SUMMARY:Paul Dunion (Wisdom: Apprenticing to the Unknown and Befriending Fate) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Paul Dunion for the new book\, Apprenticing to the Unknown and Befriending Fate.

SUMMARY:A Journey to the Future with authors Kathryn Hulick and Kelly Weinersmith Virtual Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present a Journey to the Future author talk and Q&A with authors Kathryn Hulick (Welcome to the Future) and Kelly Weinersmith (Soonish). \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nThe New York Times bestseller Soonish and the newly released kids’ book Welcome to the Future both take readers on a journey through technologies that may transform our world. The authors of these two futuristic titles will talk about the future and answer your questions in an event that is perfect for families. Older teens and adults will love the humor and insightful visions of Soonish\, created by Kelly Weinersmith\, a biologist who studies parasites\, and her husband Zach Weinersmith\, who is a cartoonist and the creator of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal Comics. Kids and teens in middle school and high school will enjoy the fascinating technology and deep questions posed by Welcome to the Future\, written by Kathryn Hulick and illustrated by Marci Wolski. \nAbout Welcome to the Future\nHave you ever wondered what the future may look like? In this book\, you’ll explore 10 ways technology could alter our way of life. The challenge for you is to decide which changes you want for yourself and the world. \nIn the future\, will we teleport from place to place\, keep dinosaurs as pets\, or 3D-print our dinner? Will we live on Mars or upload our brains to computers? Could we solve climate change by making all our energy from mini stars we build here on earth? In this book\, you’ll meet the scientists working to bring science fiction to life and learn how soon we might have amazing new technology. You’ll also delve deep into questions about right and wrong. Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should. How can we build the best possible future for everyone on Earth? \nAbout Soonish\nFrom a top scientist and the creator of the hugely popular web comic Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal\, a hilariously illustrated investigation into future technologies — from how to fling a ship into deep space on the cheap to 3D organ printing\nWhat will the world of tomorrow be like? How does progress happen? And why do we not have a lunar colony already? What is the hold-up? \nIn this smart and funny book\, celebrated cartoonist Zach Weinersmith and noted researcher Dr. Kelly Weinersmith give us a snapshot of what’s coming next — from robot swarms to nuclear fusion powered-toasters. By weaving their own research\, interviews with the scientists who are making these advances happen\, and Zach’s trademark comics\, the Weinersmiths investigate why these technologies are needed\, how they would work\, and what is standing in their way. New technologies are almost never the work of isolated geniuses with a neat idea. A given future technology may need any number of intermediate technologies to develop first\, and many of these critical advances may appear to be irrelevant when they are first discovered. The journey to progress is full of strange detours and blind alleys that tell us so much about the human mind and the march of civilization. \nTo this end\, Soonish investigates ten different emerging fields\, from programmable matter to augmented reality\, from space elevators to robotic construction\, to show us the amazing world we will have\, you know\, soonish. \nAbout Kathryn Hulick\nKathryn Hulick is an author\, freelance writer\, and former Peace Corps volunteer. She writes regularly for Science News for Students and Muse magazine. Her books cover topics such as video games\, artificial intelligence\, dinosaurs\, and more. STRANGE BUT TRUE (Quarto\, 2019) explores the science behind paranormal mysteries. Hulick’s favorite part of writing about science is getting to speak with researchers in many different fields. Once\, she spoke with an expert on parallel universes while he was shoveling snow from his driveway. Another time\, she called a biologist who was out in the field in Africa\, watching a herd of elephants. In addition to writing\, she enjoys hiking\, gardening\, painting and reading. Hulick lives in Massachusetts with her husband\, son and dog. \nAbout Kelly Weinersmith\nDr. Kelly Weinersmith received her PhD in Ecology at the University of California Davis\, and is an adjunct faculty member in the BioSciences department at Rice University. Kelly studies parasites that manipulate the behavior of their hosts\, and her research has been featured in The Atlantic\, National Geographic\, BBC World\, Science\, and Nature. When she isn’t studying Nature’s creepiest wonders\, Kelly is writing books with her husband\, Zach Weinersmith (creator of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal Comics). Their first book\, Soonish: Ten Emerging Technologies That’ll Improve and/or Ruin Everything\, was a NYTimes Bestseller. Their next book is about the future of humans in space\, and will be published through Penguin Press.

DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Spencer Quinn for the latest book in the Chet & Bernie Mystery Series\, It’s a Wonderful Woof. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nSpencer Quinn’s It’s a Wonderful Woof presents a holiday adventure for Chet the dog\, “the most lovable narrator in crime fiction” (Boston Globe)\, and his human partner\, PI Bernie Little. \nHoliday time in the Valley\, and in the holiday spirit—despite the dismal shape of the finances at the Little Detective Agency—Bernie refers a potential client to Victor Klovsky\, a fellow private eye. SUMMARY:Ross Douthat (The Deep Places) Virtual Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with New York Times columnist Ross Douthat for his memoir\, The Deep Places. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nAbout the Book\nIn this vulnerable\, insightful memoir\, the New York Times columnist tells the story of his five-year struggle with a disease that officially doesn’t exist\, exploring the limits of modern medicine\, the stories that we unexpectedly fall into\, and the secrets that only suffering reveals. \n“A powerful memoir about our fragile hopes in the face of chronic illness.”—Kate Bowler\, bestselling author of Everything Happens for a Reason \nIn the summer of 2015\, Ross Douthat was moving his family\, with two young daughters and a pregnant wife\, from Washington\, D.C.\, to a sprawling farmhouse in a picturesque Connecticut town when he acquired a mysterious and devastating sickness. It left him sleepless\, crippled\, wracked with pain–a shell of himself. After months of seeing doctors and descending deeper into a physical inferno\, he discovered that he had a disease which according to CDC definitions does not actually exist: the chronic form of Lyme disease\, a hotly contested condition that devastates the lives of tens of thousands of people but has no official recognition–and no medically approved cure. \nFrom a rural dream house that now felt like a prison\, Douthat’s search for help takes him off the map of official medicine\, into territory where cranks and conspiracies abound and patients are forced to take control of their own treatment and experiment on themselves. Slowly\, against his instincts and assumptions\, he realizes that many of the cranks and weirdos are right\, that many supposed “hypochondriacs” are victims of an indifferent medical establishment\, and that all kinds of unexpected experiences and revelations lurk beneath the surface of normal existence\, in the places underneath. \nThe Deep Places is a story about what happens when you are terribly sick and realize that even the doctors who are willing to treat you can only do so much. Along the way\, Douthat describes his struggle back toward health with wit and candor\, portraying sickness as the most terrible of gifts. It teaches you to appreciate the grace of ordinary life by taking that life away from you. It reveals the deep strangeness of the world\, the possibility that the reasonable people might be wrong\, and the necessity of figuring out things for yourself. And it proves\, day by dreadful day\, that you are stronger than you ever imagined\, and that even in the depths there is always hope. \nAbout the Author\nRoss Douthat has been an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times since 2009. Previously\, he was a senior editor at The Atlantic. He is the author of The Decadent Society\, To Change the Church\, Bad Religion\, and Privilege\, and a co-author\, with Reihan Salam\, of Grand New Party. He is the film critic for National Review. He lives with his wife and four children in New Haven\, Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Armando Lucas Correa (In Search of Emma) Virtual Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Armando Lucas Correa for her new book In Search of Emma. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nAbout the Book\nRevised and updated with a new introduction by the author—and available in English for the first time—the moving story of a man who always wanted to be a father and the long emotional road to making his dream come true. \nBorn in Cuba and raised in the USA\, Armando Lucas Correa epitomized the American dream. He had everything he wanted: an incredible job as the editor of People magazine\, meeting and interviewing glamorous celebrities; a steady partner; and a comfortable life filled with travel. But with the new millennium\, he realized something vital was missing. A child. \nIn the years before gay marriage was widespread and legal across the nation\, the road to parenthood was difficult for gay couples. Though his family would not be traditional\, Correa was undaunted. Every setback\, each emotional challenge was fuel that drove him to fulfill his dream. Exhaustively researching the possibilities\, Correa eventually chose surrogacy—a long\, arduous\, and expensive method involving seemingly endless tests\, paperwork\, and difficult decisions. But with the help of science\, a lot of patience\, an egg donor\, a gestational mother\, and the unconditional support of her partner and family\, Correa’s dream finally came true with the birth of his beloved daughter\, Emma. \nIn Search of Emma is an inspiring and beautiful story of love\, family\, and fatherhood that reminds us of that\, despite the odds\, we must never stop fighting to achieve our dreams. Completely revised and updated to reflect his growing family. \nAbout the Author\nArmando Lucas Correa nació en Guantánamo\, Cuba.

SUMMARY:Ada Ferrer (Cuba: An American History) Virtual Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Ada Ferrer for her new book Cuba: An American History. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nAbout the Book\nAn epic\, sweeping history of Cuba and its complex ties to the United States—from before the arrival of Columbus to the present day—written by one of the world’s leading historians of Cuba. \nIn 1961\, at the height of the Cold War\, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba\, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century\, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016\, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021\, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Meanwhile\, politics in Washington—Barack Obama’s opening to the island\, Donald Trump’s reversal of that policy\, and the election of Joe Biden—have made the relationship between the two nations a subject of debate once more. \nNow\, award-winning historian Ada Ferrer delivers an ambitious and moving chronicle written for a moment that demands a new reckoning with both the island’s past and its relationship with the United States. Spanning more than five centuries\, Cuba: An American History provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation\, with its dramatic record of conquest and colonization\, of slavery and freedom\, of independence and revolutions made and unmade. \nAlong the way\, Ferrer explores the sometimes surprising\, often troubled intimacy between the two countries\, documenting not only the influence of the United States on Cuba but also the many ways the island has been a recurring presence in US affairs. This\, then\, is a story that will give American readers unexpected insights into the history of their own nation and\, in so doing\, help them imagine a new relationship with Cuba. \nFilled with rousing stories and characters\, and drawing on more than thirty years of research in Cuba\, Spain\, and the United States—as well as the author’s own extensive travel to the island over the same period—this is a stunning and monumental account like no other. \nAbout the Author\nAda Ferrer is Julius Silver Professor of History and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University\, where she has taught since 1995. She is the author of Insurgent Cuba: Race\, Nation\, and Revolution\, 1868–1898\, winner of the Berkshire Book Prize for the best first book by a woman in any field of history\, and Freedom’s Mirror: Cuba and Haiti in the Age of Revolution\, which won the Frederick Douglass Book Prize from the Gilder Lehrman Center at Yale University as well as multiple prizes from the American Historical Association. Born in Cuba and raised in the United States\, she has been traveling to and conducting research on the island since 1990.

SUMMARY:Read of The Day with emily m. danforth (Plain Bad Heroines) at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a Read of The Day author talk and Q&A with emily m. danforth for the paperback release of Plain Bad Heroines. danforth will be in conversation with Rick Koster\, arts & culture writer for The Day. Read of The Day is an event partnership series brought to you by Bank Square Books and The Day. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nThe award-winning author of The Miseducation of Cameron Post makes her adult debut with this highly imaginative and original horror-comedy centered around a cursed New England boarding school for girls—a wickedly whimsical celebration of the art of storytelling\, sapphic love\, and the rebellious female spirit. \n“A delectable brew of gothic horror and Hollywood satire . . . deliciously ghoulish.” —Ron Charles\, Washington Post \nOur story begins in 1902\, at the Brookhants School for Girls. Flo and Clara\, two impressionable students\, are obsessed with each other and with a daring young writer named Mary MacLane\, the author of a scandalous bestselling memoir. To show their devotion to Mary\, the girls establish their own private club and call it the Plain Bad Heroine Society. They meet in secret in a nearby apple orchard\, the setting of their wildest happiness and\, ultimately\, of their macabre deaths. This is where their bodies are later discovered with a copy of Mary’s book splayed beside them\, the victims of a swarm of stinging\, angry yellow jackets. Less than five years later\, the Brookhants School for Girls closes its doors forever—but not before three more people mysteriously die on the property\, each in a most troubling way. \nOver a century later\, the now abandoned and crumbling Brookhants is back in the news when wunderkind writer Merritt Emmons publishes a breakout book celebrating the queer\, feminist history surrounding the “haunted and cursed” Gilded Age institution. Her bestselling book inspires a controversial horror film adaptation starring celebrity actor and lesbian it girl Harper Harper playing the ill-fated heroine Flo\, opposite B-list actress and former child star Audrey Wells as Clara. But as Brookhants opens its gates once again\, and our three modern heroines arrive on set to begin filming\, past and present become grimly entangled—or perhaps just grimly exploited—and soon it’s impossible to tell where the curse leaves off and Hollywood begins. \nA story within a story within a story and featuring black-and-white period-inspired illustrations\, Plain Bad Heroines is a devilishly haunting\, modern masterwork of metafiction that manages to combine the ghostly sensibility of Sarah Waters with the dark imagination of Marisha Pessl and the sharp humor and incisive social commentary of Curtis Sittenfeld into one laugh-out-loud funny\, spellbinding\, and wonderfully luxuriant read. \nAbout emily m. danforth\nemily m. danforth is the author of the highly acclaimed young adult novel The Miseducation of Cameron Post. She has an MFA in fiction from the University of Montana and a PhD in English from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She lives with her wife and two terrible dogs in Rhode Island. Plain Bad Heroines is her first adult novel.
