SUMMARY:Edgar Garcia (Cantares) James Merrill Fellow Reading
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The James Merrill House present an author talk and reading with fellow\, Edgar Garcia. \nRegister \nAbout the Book \nPoems and micro-essays intertwine in this poetically attuned adaptation of the mid-sixteenth century Nahuatl-language Cantares Mexicanos \nCantares is a multipart engagement with the poetics and history of the colonial and Indigenous Americas\, oscillating between poetry and essay in a structure of repetitions derived from Mesoamerican poetics. Edgar Garcia reimagines the Cantares Mexicanos\, a sixteenth-century anthology of Nahuatl songs from Central Mexico\, and brings these songs to life not just as historical documents\, but as music\, to give presence of thought to their historical layers and complexities. His adaptations evoke the sound and texture of the sixteenth century\, blending Indigenous and Baroque traditions\, exploring themes of translation\, adaptation\, race\, and historical memory. The collection moves between poetry and scholarship—between poems and micro-essays. The essays provide commentary and historical context about the colonial soundscape of Central Mexico. At the same time\, the poems emphasize the songs’ sonic\, spiritual\, and poetic dimensions. \nThe Cantares emerge from a time of cultural collision—after the arrival of the Castilians but still rooted in older\, Indigenous worldviews. These songs are not nostalgic or idealized; they reflect crisis\, survival\, and creativity. Garcia’s work draws inspiration from the Popol Vuh\, the K’iche’ Maya creation story\, which begins in colonial darkness and still insists on the possibility of light. Through these adaptations\, Cantares becomes a meditation on history\, imagination\, and the power of art to endure and create in the face of loss. \nAbout the Author \nEdgar Garcia is a poet and scholar of the hemispheric cultures of the Americas. He is the author of Skins of Columbus: A Dream Ethnography (Fence Books\, 2019); Signs of the Americas: A Poetics of Pictography\, Hieroglyphs\, and Khipu (University of Chicago Press\, 2020); Infinite Regress (collaborative work with Eamon Ore-Giron\, Bom Dia Books\, 2021); Emergency: Reading the Popol Vuh in a Time of Crisis (University of Chicago Press\, 2022); and Cantares (Wesleyan University Press\, 2026). He is faculty in the department of English at the University of Chicago where he is also affiliated with the Program in Creative Writing.

SUMMARY:Mark Joseph Stelzner (Growth Machines) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Mark Joseph Stelzner for his book\, Growth Machines. \nRSVP \nAbout the Book \nA provocative look at America’s compulsion to consume and our obsession’s surprising—and strange—origins. \nIn a capitalist society\, people sell their labor to purchase staples like food\, shelter\, and anxiety medication. That’s the equation of everyday economic life that we’ve always been told is true. Except\, is it really that simple anymore? No matter how unmaterialistic you may think you are\, odds are that deep within is a drive to consume because it feels good: books you won’t read\, clothes you won’t like and might wear even less\, a replacement phone whose novelty runs out as quickly as its upgrade hits the market. But what drives this impulse? \nIn Growth Machines\, Mark Joseph Stelzner shows how today’s consumers are now programmed by a US economy intent on infinite growth to work for goods they’ve been convinced they need and conditioned to want. Stelzner establishes the gaps between economic thinking and economic reality\, arguing that consumption is no longer just a reflection of needs\, but rather\, it reflects a need for transaction—in many cases\, a treat we seek out because it feels good. We work not only to be able to consume the essentials for living\, but also to consume for consumption’s sake. Yet such consumption doesn’t make us happier. Stelzner traces this strange nature of consumption to an environmental source: an economy that demands growth. To keep its economy pumping\, the US must keep Americans consuming. This makes Stelzner’s book an uncomfortable reflection on how we internalize our economy. To be an American is to consume; to consume is what makes America. \nAbout the Author \nMark Joseph Stelzner is associate professor of economics at Connecticut College. He has published in the Cambridge Journal of Economics\, The Review of Black Political Economy\, and the Journal of Happiness Studies\, and his work has been featured in The Economist and The Nation.

SUMMARY:Josh Weil (What Came West) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Josh Weil for his book\, What Came West. Josh will be in conversation with Stuart Vyse. \nAbout the Book \nA gripping tale of murder and pursuit set against the shifting Sierra Nevada during the Gold Rush\, where ambition\, violence\, and destiny collide. \n“What Came West is astonishing. Unraveling the mythology of the Western with a genius for insight and description\, Weil tells the story anew: a beautiful\, ruminative\, bloody\, terrifying and brilliant book about a chapter in the life of one man and in the life of our country. Unmissable.” —Andrew Sean Greer\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Less \nSierra Nevada\, 1840s\, just before the Gold Rush ignites. Silas Hall has never belonged anywhere except the wild. Bullied as a child and uneasy even within his own family\, he finds brief solace in love and fatherhood before the pull of the frontier overwhelms him. One day he heads west\, chasing a life that might finally make sense. \nWhat follows is a swift\, pulse-pounding journey into the mountains\, where Silas becomes one of the first white settlers to cross into the Sierra Nevada. He forges a precarious peace with the Indigenous people who live there—until the Gold Rush crashes in with violent force. As thousands flood the region\, the balance shatters\, and Silas commits murder\, a desperate act that alters the course of every life around him\, including his own. \nTaut and propulsive\, What Came West is told in two parallel voices—one a tense\, third-person account of Silas on the run\, and the other a confessional letter from Silas to the son he left behind—and confronts many different forms of American inheritance\, in all its danger\, emotional voltage\, and mythic momentum. Weil’s masterpiece is a fierce\, heart-driven portrait of an outsider racing toward belonging and barreling headlong into consequence. \nAbout the Author \nJosh Weil is the author of the novel The Great Glass Sea\, the novella collection The New Valley\, and the story collection The Age of Perpetual Light. He is a Fulbright fellow and has been awarded the Dayton Literary Peace Prize\, the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, a “5 Under 35” award from the National Book Foundation\, the California Book Award\, and a Pushcart Prize. For the past dozen years\, he has called the Sierra Nevada of Northern California home. \nAbout Stuart Vyse \nStuart Vyse is a behavioral scientist\, teacher\, and writer. He is a contributing editor for Skeptical Inquirer magazine\, for which he writes the “Behavior & Belief” column\, both online and in print. He has written personal and professional essays in a variety of places\, including the Observer\, Medium\, The Atlantic\, The Good Men Project\, Tablet\, and Time. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:THE UNITED: Caro Claire Burke (Yesteryear) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The United Theatre present an author talk and signing with Caro Claire Burke for her book\, Yesteryear. \nTICKETS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT. Doors open at 6:00PM. \nGet Tickets \nAbout the Book \nA traditional American woman\, a beautiful wife and mother who sells her pioneer lifestyle of raw milk and farm-fresh eggs to her millions of social media followers\, suddenly awakens cold\, filthy\, and terrified in the brutal reality of 1805—where she must unravel whether this living nightmare is an elaborate hoax\, a twisted reality show\, or something far more sinister in this sensational debut novel. \nMy name was Natalie Heller Mills\, and I was perfect at being alive. \nNatalie lives a traditional lifestyle. Her charming farmhouse is rustic\, her husband a handsome cowboy\, her six children each more delightful than the last. So what if there are nannies and producers behind the scenes\, her kitchen hiding industrial-grade fridges and ovens\, her husband the Republican equivalent of a Kennedy? What Natalie’s followers—all 8 million of them—don’t know won’t hurt them. And The Angry Women? The privileged\, Ivy League\, coastal elite haters who call her an antifeminist iconoclast? They’re sick with jealousy. Because Natalie isn’t simply living the good life\, she’s living the ideal—and just so happens to be building an empire from it. \nUntil one morning\, she wakes up in a life that isn’t hers. Her home\, her husband\, her children—they’re all familiar\, but something’s off. Her kitchen is warmed by a sputtering fire rather than electricity\, her children are dirty and strange\, and her soft-handed husband is suddenly a competent farmer. Just yesterday\, Natalie was curating photos of homemade jam for her Instagram\, and now she’s expected to haul firewood and handwash clothes until her fingers bleed. Has she become the unwitting star of a brutal reality show? Could it really be time travel? Is she being tested by God? By Satan? When Natalie suffers a brutal injury in the woods\, she realizes two things: This is not her beautiful life\, and she must escape by any means possible. \nA gripping\, electrifying novel that is as darkly funny as it is frightening\, Yesteryear is a gimlet-eyed look at tradition\, fame\, faith\, and the grand performance of womanhood. \nAbout the Author \nCaro Claire Burke received her Master’s in Fine Arts from the Bennington Writing Seminars. She is the co-host of Diabolical Lies\, a politics and culture podcast. Yesteryear is her first novel.

SUMMARY:Eoghan Walls (Field Notes from an Extinction) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Eoghan Walls for his book\, Field Notes From an Extinction. \nAbout the Book\nFast-paced and funny. Scientific and tender. A literary thriller featuring Auks. As if Hilary Mantel’s The Giant\, O’Brien met Robinson Crusoe\, here is a story of one man’s growing humanity amidst famine and extinction. \nTold in the vernacular of the day\, this novel-as-notebook features a 19th-century ornithologist on a remote Irish island—from the author of indie favorite The Gospel of Orla. \nWritten in the form of a 19th-century notebook of ornithological observations\, Field Notes from an Extinction follows the life and work of one Ignatius Green\, a fictitious English scientist dispatched by the Royal Society to the remote island of Tor Mor off the northern Irish coast. Green\, a widower\, is single-minded and self-righteous\, brilliant and bumbling. He is determined to set the scientific record straight on the mating rituals\, feeding and care of hatchlings and other minutiae he can gather about the Great Auk (pinguinus impennis). \nGreen’s world is shattered when his monthly goods delivery arrives ravaged by the local Irish townsmen. His fury at their impertinence is matched only by his dismay at finding a small child amid the shipment–dirty\, abandoned\, mute\, and utterly feral and unmanageable. Worse\, the locals are growing restless and hungry. And there is talk sweeping the land of a terrifying woman with unnatural power. \nGreen fights for his survival against brigands and hunger and\, most fearsome\, the resolve of a fierce and angry child. And\, perhaps\, for a wider understanding of family amidst roiling societal unrest. \nAbout the Author\nEoghan Walls is a Northern Irish poet. He has lived and worked in Ireland\, Britain\, Germany and Rwanda. He won an Eric Gregory Award in 2006\, and his poetry has been shortlisted for multiple international awards\, including the Bridport Prize\, the Manchester Poetry Prize and the Piggott Prize. He has published the first major translation of Heidegger’s poetical works and currently teaches Creative Writing at Lancaster University. The Gospel of Orla (Seven Stories Press; 2023)\, his debut novel\, was an IndieNext and a Library Reads selection\, and was called “utterly convincing and fresh and original” by Colm Tóibín. His new novel is Field Notes from an Extinction. \nMore Details

SUMMARY:Ellen Carol DuBois (Elizabeth Cady Stanton: A Revolutionary Life) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP for this event at BankSquareBooks.com/events\nBank Square Books and the Mystic and Noank Library present an author talk and signing with Ellen Carol DuBois for her book Elizabeth Cady Stanton: A Revolutionary Life. Ellen will be in conversation with Lisa Wilson. \nAbout the Book\nElizabeth Cady Stanton was a singular leader\, thinker\, and organizer whose fight for women’s emancipation stretched from the 1840s to her death in 1902\, a full fifth of America’s history. Yet her legacy has been marked by controversy. In this landmark biography\, eminent historian Ellen Carol DuBois paints a fresh portrait of this complex crusader whose tireless work made contemporary feminism possible.\nBorn in 1815 into a family deeply marked by the tumult of the American Revolution and surging evangelicalism\, Stanton was captivated by Enlightenment ideas about individual freedom and transformed by early experiences in what she called “the school of antislavery.” Though most remembered for her fight for the vote\, she was also an early crusader for women’s reproductive autonomy and reforming the institution of marriage\, and against Christianity’s subordination of women. Her rifts with Black reformers and embrace of nativist ideas tarnished her reputation\, but her words still have the ability to move and agitate people today.\nBuilding upon exhaustive archival research and a deep engagement with Stanton’s copious writings\, Elizabeth Cady Stanton brilliantly captures a crucial reformer in all of her intelligence\, moral ambiguity\, and power. \nAbout the Author\nEllen Carol DuBois is distinguished professor of history at UCLA. Her pioneering works on the US woman suffrage movement include Feminism and Suffrage: The Emergence of an Independent Women’s Movement in America\, 1848–1869\, Harriot Stanton Blatch and the Winning of Woman Suffrage\, and Suffrage: Women’s Long Battle for the Vote. She lives in Los Angeles. \nAbout Lisa Wilson\nLisa Wilson focuses her present research on North America and the Caribbean. She has recently begun a project comparing the experiences of seventeenth-century women in Barbados\, Bermuda\, Virginia and New England. She has published on topics such as widowhood\, manhood\, and stepfamilies in Early America.

SUMMARY:Weijia Pan (Motherlands) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP for this event at BankSquareBooks.com/events\nBank Square Books and The James Merrill House present an author talk and signing with fellow\, Weijia Pan for his book\, Motherlands. \nAbout the Book\nChosen by Louise Glück for the Max Ritvo Poetry Prize\, this engrossing debut interrogates history\, identity\, and the power of poetry to elucidate both. \nMotherlands opens with a child drawn early to poetry. “In summer I write. Two lines at a time\, two vying souls / running up the wall.” The collection follows this speaker-poet through a childhood in post-Maoist China and an eventual move to the United States\, laying bare cultural and linguistic tensions in both historical and modern settings. He cites Chinese laborers toiling in American factories—an echo of the brutalities endured by those who constructed the Transatlantic Railroad—and speaks to anxieties around belonging\, assimilation\, and identity. “If I forget one character a day\,” he writes. “I will have forgotten Chinese / by the end of 2042.” \nIn these attentive\, imaginative poems\, Weijia Pan questions the artist’s duty—his duty—as a chronicler of truth\, especially through issues of displacement and global injustice. What can the poet do but observe? And yet\, in unpacking ancestral traumas connected to Maoist China and modern-day bigotry exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic\, he still finds himself turning to art as a way to understand both the self and the world at large. Through elegant juxtapositions\, Pan crafts an emotional world that is at once regional and universal—Li Bai and Du Fu sit alongside Glenn Gould and Sviatoslav Richter\, pepper used to bless new roads is repurposed in the mace used against protesters\, two languages compete on a single tongue. Lyrical and visionary\, this collection embodies poetry’s capacity to ground us\, teach us\, and change us. \nAbout the Author\nWeijia Pan is the author of Motherlands\, selected by Louise Glück for the 2023 Max Ritvo Poetry Prize and published by Milkweed Editions in 2024. A poet and translator from Shanghai\, China\, his work has appeared in AGNI\, Boulevard\, Cincinnati Review\, Copper Nickel\, and Poetry Daily. He received an MFA from the University of Houston and is currently a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.
