SUMMARY:Leah Weiss (All the Little Hopes) Author Talk and Q&A at Savoy Bookshop & Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Leah Weiss for the new book\, All the Little Hopes.\nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nA Southern story of friendship forged by books and bees\, when the timeless troubles of growing up meet the murky shadows of World War II. \nDeep in the tobacco land of North Carolina\, nothing’s been the same since the boys shipped off to war and worry took their place. Thirteen-year-old Lucy Brown is precocious and itching for adventure. Then Allie Bert Tucker wanders into town\, an outcast with a puzzling past\, and Lucy figures the two of them can solve any curious crime they find―just like her hero\, Nancy Drew. \nTheir chance comes when a man goes missing\, a woman stops speaking\, and an eccentric gives the girls a mystery to solve that takes them beyond the ordinary. Their quiet town\, seasoned with honeybees and sweet tea\, becomes home to a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp. More men go missing. And together\, the girls embark on a journey to discover if we ever really know who the enemy is. \nLush with Southern atmosphere\, All The Little Hopes is the story of two girls growing up as war creeps closer\, blurring the difference between what’s right\, what’s wrong\, and what we know to be true. \nAbout Leah Weiss\nLEAH WEISS is a Southern writer born in North Carolina and raised in the foothills of Virginia. Her debut novel If the Creek Don’t Rise was released in August of 2017. Her short stories have been published in The Simple Life magazine\, Every Day Fiction and Deep South Magazine. You can contact her on her website leahweiss.com.

SUMMARY:Read of The Day with emily m. danforth (Plain Bad Heroines) at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a Read of The Day author talk and Q&A with emily m. danforth for the paperback release of Plain Bad Heroines. danforth will be in conversation with Rick Koster\, arts & culture writer for The Day. Read of The Day is an event partnership series brought to you by Bank Square Books and The Day. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nThe award-winning author of The Miseducation of Cameron Post makes her adult debut with this highly imaginative and original horror-comedy centered around a cursed New England boarding school for girls—a wickedly whimsical celebration of the art of storytelling\, sapphic love\, and the rebellious female spirit. \n“A delectable brew of gothic horror and Hollywood satire . . . deliciously ghoulish.” —Ron Charles\, Washington Post \nOur story begins in 1902\, at the Brookhants School for Girls. Flo and Clara\, two impressionable students\, are obsessed with each other and with a daring young writer named Mary MacLane\, the author of a scandalous bestselling memoir. To show their devotion to Mary\, the girls establish their own private club and call it the Plain Bad Heroine Society. They meet in secret in a nearby apple orchard\, the setting of their wildest happiness and\, ultimately\, of their macabre deaths. This is where their bodies are later discovered with a copy of Mary’s book splayed beside them\, the victims of a swarm of stinging\, angry yellow jackets. Less than five years later\, the Brookhants School for Girls closes its doors forever—but not before three more people mysteriously die on the property\, each in a most troubling way. \nOver a century later\, the now abandoned and crumbling Brookhants is back in the news when wunderkind writer Merritt Emmons publishes a breakout book celebrating the queer\, feminist history surrounding the “haunted and cursed” Gilded Age institution. Her bestselling book inspires a controversial horror film adaptation starring celebrity actor and lesbian it girl Harper Harper playing the ill-fated heroine Flo\, opposite B-list actress and former child star Audrey Wells as Clara. But as Brookhants opens its gates once again\, and our three modern heroines arrive on set to begin filming\, past and present become grimly entangled—or perhaps just grimly exploited—and soon it’s impossible to tell where the curse leaves off and Hollywood begins. \nA story within a story within a story and featuring black-and-white period-inspired illustrations\, Plain Bad Heroines is a devilishly haunting\, modern masterwork of metafiction that manages to combine the ghostly sensibility of Sarah Waters with the dark imagination of Marisha Pessl and the sharp humor and incisive social commentary of Curtis Sittenfeld into one laugh-out-loud funny\, spellbinding\, and wonderfully luxuriant read. \nAbout emily m. danforth\nemily m. danforth is the author of the highly acclaimed young adult novel The Miseducation of Cameron Post. She has an MFA in fiction from the University of Montana and a PhD in English from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She lives with her wife and two terrible dogs in Rhode Island. Plain Bad Heroines is her first adult novel.

SUMMARY:Ada Ferrer (Cuba: An American History) Virtual Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Ada Ferrer for her new book Cuba: An American History. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nAbout the Book\nAn epic\, sweeping history of Cuba and its complex ties to the United States—from before the arrival of Columbus to the present day—written by one of the world’s leading historians of Cuba. \nIn 1961\, at the height of the Cold War\, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba\, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century\, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016\, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021\, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Meanwhile\, politics in Washington—Barack Obama’s opening to the island\, Donald Trump’s reversal of that policy\, and the election of Joe Biden—have made the relationship between the two nations a subject of debate once more. \nNow\, award-winning historian Ada Ferrer delivers an ambitious and moving chronicle written for a moment that demands a new reckoning with both the island’s past and its relationship with the United States. Spanning more than five centuries\, Cuba: An American History provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation\, with its dramatic record of conquest and colonization\, of slavery and freedom\, of independence and revolutions made and unmade. \nAlong the way\, Ferrer explores the sometimes surprising\, often troubled intimacy between the two countries\, documenting not only the influence of the United States on Cuba but also the many ways the island has been a recurring presence in US affairs. This\, then\, is a story that will give American readers unexpected insights into the history of their own nation and\, in so doing\, help them imagine a new relationship with Cuba. \nFilled with rousing stories and characters\, and drawing on more than thirty years of research in Cuba\, Spain\, and the United States—as well as the author’s own extensive travel to the island over the same period—this is a stunning and monumental account like no other. \nAbout the Author\nAda Ferrer is Julius Silver Professor of History and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University\, where she has taught since 1995. She is the author of Insurgent Cuba: Race\, Nation\, and Revolution\, 1868–1898\, winner of the Berkshire Book Prize for the best first book by a woman in any field of history\, and Freedom’s Mirror: Cuba and Haiti in the Age of Revolution\, which won the Frederick Douglass Book Prize from the Gilder Lehrman Center at Yale University as well as multiple prizes from the American Historical Association. Born in Cuba and raised in the United States\, she has been traveling to and conducting research on the island since 1990.
