SUMMARY:I'll Follow the Sun\, Photography exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a reception launching the solo exhibit of the dynamic\, large-scale botanical works by photographer Shelley Lawrence Kirkwood. Kirkwood is an artist\, writer\, and educator whose work explores themes of memory\, time\, and transient states of being through the lens of nature. Her works have been exhibited internationally\, and published in numerous magazines. A portfolio from this series was recently awarded best-in-show by UK’s Royal Horticultural Society at an international exhibition hosted by Saatchi gallery. \nThis collection of colorful macro photography uses foraged plants from the Sonoran Desert and the forests and meadows of western Massachusetts — two distinct landscapes this photographer has called home for much of her life. \nShe says: “The process of isolating and combining these specimens offers an opportunity to experience the relationship of the eternal and the temporal. In isolation\, cycles of growth and decay become more apparent\, revealing the singular grace of each form\, and evidence of the particular environment from which it emerged. I view each of these compositions as monuments to past and present\, and my own transient presence within these landscapes.” \n$5 donation suggested

SUMMARY:Brenda Janowitz (The Liz Taylor Ring) Author Luncheon at The Shipwright's Daughter
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The Otis Library in Norwich present an author luncheon at The Shipwright’s Daughter with Brenda Janowitz for her new book\, The Liz Taylor Ring.\nTickets to this event are $45 and include lunch and a signed paperback copy of The Liz Taylor Ring. Pre-registration is required.\nSponsored by Guinan & Houle\, LLP \nAbout the Book\n“Brenda Janowitz writes with extraordinary humor and heart.” —JANE GREEN\, New York Times bestselling author \nThree siblings. A priceless family ring. One legendary love story. \nIn 1978\, Lizzie Morgan and Ritchie Schneider embark on a whirlwind romance on the bright beaches and glamorous yachts of Long Island. Over the years\, their relationship has its share of ups and downs\, including a nine-month hiatus that ends with a stunning eleven-carat ring—one that looks just like the diamond Richard Burton gifted Liz Taylor after their own separation. Like the famous couple\, despite the drama that would unfold throughout the Schneiders’ marriage\, the ring would be there as a symbol of their love…until it wasn’t. \nDecades later\, when the lost ring unexpectedly resurfaces\, the Schneiders’ three children gather under one roof for the first time in years\, eager to get their hands on this beloved\, expensive reminder of their departed parents. But determining the fate of the heirloom is no simple task\, unearthing old wounds and heartaches the siblings can’t ignore. And when the ring reveals a secret that challenges everything they thought they knew about their parents’ epic love story\, they’ll have to decide whether to move forward as a family or let the ring break them once and for all. \nAbout Brenda Janowitz\nBrenda Janowitz is the author of seven novels\, including The Grace Kelly Dress. She is the former books correspondent for PopSugar\, and her work has also appeared in the New York Times\, Real Simple\, the Washington Post\, and the New York Post\, among others. She is a graduate of Cornell University and Hofstra School of Law and lives in New York with her husband and two sons. SUMMARY:Lisa Brownell (Gallows Road) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Lisa Brownell for the new book\, Gallows Road.\nBooks will be available for purchase during the event. This talk will be moderated by Ruth W. Crocker. \nAbout the Book\nA beautiful young woman is condemned to death for a crime that she swears that she didn’t commit. Inspired by true events in New London\, Connecticut in the 1750s\, the novel GALLOWS ROAD is told through the voice of a servant\, Mercy Bramble. Sent to live in a remote farmhouse\, the 17-year-old finds herself in a destructive relationship with her 27-year-old master. The mysterious death of her newborn puts Mercy’s life in the hands of a jury while three ministers — and a group known as Children of God — all fight to save her soul. Indentured servants — white or Native American men and women who often worked alongside black slaves — were forbidden to marry during the seven years they were bonded to service. Illegitimate births were common\, and unwed mothers faced heavy fines and extended servitude. This setting of multi-racial households in colonial New England sheds light on an important chapter in our American past. The story builds to a climax that Kirkus Reviews has called “a nail- biter all the way.” \nAbout Lisa Brownell\nLISA HALL BROWNELL\, a fiction writer and editor\, believes that stories have the power to connect one person to another\, and past to present. GALLOWS ROAD is her first novel. She also has written screenplays and short stories and is working on a second novel. A former media director for Mystic Seaport Museum and director of publications for Connecticut College\, Brownell was editor of the award-winning CC: Magazine. She graduated from Brown University\, and earned an M.A. in English with a concentration in creative writing from San Francisco State University. She now lives in Ledyard\, Connecticut. A member of the Mystic Writers\, she helped to launch the group’s website and blog. https://mysticwriters.org . \nAbout Ruth W. Crocker\nRuth is focused on writing\, and teaching the writing process\, especially with aspiring writers who have personal stories they would like to share. She received an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Bennington College\, a PhD in Nutrition and Human Development from the University of Connecticut\, and a Master of Education from Tufts University. Among numerous publications\, her essay Sam’s Way\, originally published in the Gettysburg Review\, was listed in Best American Essays 2013\, and an excerpt from her memoir\, Those Who Remain: Remembrance and Reunion After War\, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She serves as Chair of the Women & Girls Fund of the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut and as national newsletter editor of the Gold Star Wives of America. She lives and writes in Mystic\, Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Personality in Structure
DESCRIPTION:Do buildings have personalities? Come see for yourself in our exhibition\, Personality in Structure. A building or structure exudes an aura and ambiance that is inviting. The different ways a building engages people beckon them to connect with it. Connect by stepping inside the building or walking around it. Without this connection\, the building would feel empty and lack in spirit. It would feel vacant\, without lively feet roaming the halls and rooms. The building’s personality speaks to us\, instilling different moods in people. \nEnjoy our architectural-themed exhibit featuring the art of Mark Szantyr\, Liisa Lang\, and G. Roger Clements. \nOpening Reception: April 22nd from 7-10 PM \nShow On Display Until: May 20th\, 2022
