We teach chess strategy\, chess sportsmanship\, and organize games. \nSportsman-like conduct is always a goal. Members must be respectful of each other’s play\, and at the end of each game\, win or lose\, members must be cordial with one another. \nInstructor: \nMichael Grater\, library associate and chess enthusiast\, leads our Chess Club. He grew up playing chess and continues to play for fun. DESCRIPTION:This beginner-friendly class is an introduction to the relief process\, the technique used in the oldest forms of printmaking. By creating a single-color linocut print\, you will learn the basics of relief printing. We will explore types of carving blocks\, inks\, and papers\, and you will learn how to prepare your carving block\, transfer your design\, and carve and ink the block. You will make several prints\, both by hand printing and using the printing press. (After this class\, members will be certified to use the press for relief printing.) \nPlease read through the relief printing handout (found here) before class\, and bring a simple design no larger than 5×8 inches. A good beginner design has a bold image\, thick lines\, and no fine details. Keeping it simple will help you avoid frustration and allow you to focus on the fundamentals of printmaking. You can find some great ideas by searching for free black and white vector art. DESCRIPTION:We welcome local writers for free-write sessions at 4 p.m.\, Mondays\, in the Ames Room. The sessions are open to anyone who feels like writing. \nLoosely based on the notion of stream-of-consciousness writing described by Natalie Goldberg in “Writing Down the Bones\,” the sessions are broken into three parts of 5 minutes\, 10 minutes\, and 5 minutes. A writer selects a topic from subjects previously placed in a box. For the first 5 minutes\, write whatever comes to mind. Don’t stop to correct\, just record whatever pops into your head\, even if it’s something like\, “I have no idea what to write…” Each person shares what they’ve written\, free of commentary or criticism. \nThen\, for 10 minutes\, writers write what comes to mind\, perhaps an idea or a subject someone had just read aloud or something you wrote in the first 5 minutes will lead to a focus. The group shares again. Writers write for another 5 minutes and then share. \nYou’ll be surprised at the places you’ll go with the topics in these sessions. They give you an opportunity to express yourself\, they’re therapeutic\, and they often lead to a lot to talk about after putting your pens down.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome local writers for free-write sessions at 4 p.m.\, Mondays\, in the Ames Room. The sessions are open to anyone who feels like writing. \nLoosely based on the notion of stream-of-consciousness writing described by Natalie Goldberg in “Writing Down the Bones\,” the sessions are broken into three parts of 5 minutes\, 10 minutes\, and 5 minutes. A writer selects a topic from subjects previously placed in a box. For the first 5 minutes\, write whatever comes to mind. Don’t stop to correct\, just record whatever pops into your head\, even if it’s something like\, “I have no idea what to write…” Each person shares what they’ve written\, free of commentary or criticism. \nThen\, for 10 minutes\, writers write what comes to mind\, perhaps an idea or a subject someone had just read aloud or something you wrote in the first 5 minutes will lead to a focus. The group shares again. Writers write for another 5 minutes and then share. \nYou’ll be surprised at the places you’ll go with the topics in these sessions. They give you an opportunity to express yourself\, they’re therapeutic\, and they often lead to a lot to talk about after putting your pens down.
