SUMMARY:Beth Turley (The Flyers) Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Beth Turley for the release of the new book The Flyers! \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nFour strangers meet in the big city and learn to embrace new experiences while keeping the best parts of home with them in this Bold Type–driven middle grade—from the author of The Last Tree Town and If This Were a Story. \nWith the arrival of a glossy\, cream-colored envelope in the mail\, Elena Martinez’s dreams come true: she’s been chosen for the Spread Your Wings Magazine’s Young Flyers program—a week-long summer internship where she’ll get to learn the ins and outs of working for the most popular teen magazine. She heads to New York City\, anxious to get away from her best friend\, Summer\, who is suddenly spending so much time with another girl from school and being so secretive about it. \nOnce there Elena meets her fellow Young Flyers: Harlow\, who can get to the bottom of any story\, Whitney\, who has spot-on fashion sense\, and Cailin\, a social media star with thousands of followers and an eye for photography. \nAs the four new friends explore the city that never sleeps\, each girl brings a piece of home\, and a few secrets\, with them and learns that no one’s life is as glossy as it may appear. But with courage\, teamwork\, and lots of passion\, there’s no stopping a Flyer. \nAbout Beth Turley\nBeth Turley is a graduate of the MFA in creative and professional writing program at Western Connecticut State University. She lives and writes in southeastern Connecticut\, where the leaves changing color feels like magic and the water is never too far away. She is the author of If This Were a Story\, The Last Tree Town\, and The Flyers. Visit her on Twitter @Beth_Turley.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Alyssa Maxwell (Murder at Wakehurst)
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Alyssa Maxwell for the release of the her book Murder at Wakehurst. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nAbout the Book\nIn the autumnal chill of Newport\, Rhode Island\, at the close of the nineteenth century\, journalist Emma Cross discovers an instance of cold-blooded murder on the grounds of a mansion… \nFollowing the death of her uncle\, Cornelius Vanderbilt\, in September 1899\, a somber Emma is in no mood for one of Newport’s extravagant parties. But to keep Vanderbilt’s reckless son Neily out of trouble\, she agrees to accompany him to an Elizabethan fete on the lavish grounds of Wakehurst\, the Ochre Point “cottage” modeled after an English palace\, owned by Anglophile James Van Alen. \nHeld in Wakehurst’s English-style gardens\, the festivities will include a swordplay demonstration\, an archery competition\, scenes from Shakespeare’s plays\, and even a joust. As Emma wanders the grounds distracted by grief\, she overhears a fierce argument between a man and a woman behind a tall hedge. As the joust begins\, she’s drawn by the barking of Van Alen’s dogs and finds a man on the ground\, an arrow through his chest. \nThe victim is one of the 400’s most influential members\, Judge Clayton Schuyler. Could one of the countless criminals he’d imprisoned over the years have returned to seek revenge–or could one of his own family members have targeted him? With the help of her beau Derrick Andrews and Detective Jesse Whyte\, Emma begins to learn the judge was not the straight arrow he appeared to be. As their investigation leads them in ever-widening circles\, Emma will have to score a bull’s eye to stop the killer from taking another life… \nAbout Alyssa Maxwell\nAlyssa Maxwell began a love affair with the city of Newport years ago. Time and again the colonial neighborhoods and grand mansions drew her to return\, and on one of those later visits she met the man who would become her husband. Always a lover of history\, Maxwell found that marrying into a large\, generations–old Newport family opened up an exciting new world of historical discovery. Today\, she and her husband reside in Florida\, but part of her heart remains firmly in that small New England city of great historical significance. SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk and Q&A with Nancy Marie Brown (The Real Valkyrie)
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Nancy Marie Brown for her new book The Real Valkyrie. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\n“A complex\, important\, and delightful addition to women’s history.” —Pamela D. Toler\, author of Women Warriors: An Unexpected History \nIn 2017\, DNA tests revealed to the collective shock of many scholars that a Viking warrior in a high-status grave in Birka\, Sweden was actually a woman. The Real Valkyrie weaves together archaeology\, history\, and literature to imagine her life and times\, showing that Viking women had more power and agency than historians have imagined. \nBrown uses science to link the Birka warrior\, whom she names Hervor\, to Viking trading towns and to their great trade route east to Byzantium and beyond. She imagines her life intersecting with larger-than-life but real women\, including Queen Gunnhild Mother-of-Kings\, the Viking leader known as The Red Girl\, and Queen Olga of Kyiv. Hervor’s short\, dramatic life shows that much of what we have taken as truth about women in the Viking Age is based not on data\, but on nineteenth-century Victorian biases. Rather than holding the household keys\, Viking women in history\, law\, saga\, poetry\, and myth carry weapons. These women brag\, “As heroes we were widely known—with keen spears we cut blood from bone.” In this compelling narrative Brown brings the world of those valkyries and shield-maids to vivid life. \nAbout the Author\nNancy Marie Brown is the author of highly praised books of nonfiction\, including Song of the Vikings. She is fluent in Icelandic and spends her summers in Iceland. She has deep ties to the Scandinavian cultural institutions in the U.S. Brown lives in East Burke\, Vermont.

SUMMARY:James Benn (Road of Bones) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with James Benn for the release of the new book Road of Bones. Benn will be in conversation with Rick Koster\, arts & culture writer for The Day. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nBilly Boyle is sent to the heart of the USSR to solve a double-murder at a critical turning point in the war in this latest installment of critically acclaimed James R. Benn’s WWII mystery series. \nIt’s September 1944\, and the US is poised to launch Operation Frantic\, a shuttle-bombing mission to be conducted by American aircraft based in Great Britain\, southern Italy\, and three Soviet airfields in the Ukraine. Tensions are already high between the American and Russian allies when two intelligence agents–one Soviet\, one American–are found dead at Poltava\, one of the Ukrainian bases. Billy is brought in to investigate\, and this time he’s paired\, at the insistence of the Soviets\, with a KGB agent who has his own political and personal agenda. \nIn the course of an investigation that quickly spirals out of control\, Billy is aided by the Night Witches\, a daring regiment of young Soviet women flying at night at very low altitudes\, bombing hundreds of German installations. \nIt’s a turning point in the war\, and allied efforts hang by a thread. Unless Billy and his KGB partner can solve the murders in an atmosphere of mutual distrust\, Operation Frantic is doomed. \nAbout James Benn\nJames R. Benn is the author of the Billy Boyle World War II mysteries. The debut\, Billy Boyle\, was selected as a Top Five book of the year by Book Sense and was a Dilys Award nominee\, A Blind Goddess was longlisted for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award\, The Rest Is Silence was a Barry Award nominee\, and The Devouring was a Macavity Award nominee. Benn\, a former librarian\, splits his time between the Gulf Coast of Florida and Connecticut with his wife\, Deborah Mandel.

SUMMARY:Sanctity and the Sonnet
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Beauty of Holiness in Poetry through Stained Glass \nIn this class we will learn how to build a sonnet based on an exploration of the stained glass windows in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption on Enders Island. \n“Poetry surrounds us everywhere.” \nHave you been stopped in your tracks in a cathedral\, as light reflected through stained glass surrounds you\, or listened to the words of a sonnet that move you deeply? Art touches us in a profound and spiritual way. \nIn this one day workshop join Dr. Varholy for a lively discussion on the sonnets of Shakespeare\, St. Robert Southwell and Michelangelo. Then spend time with author Len Mattano as he shares his own photos and the stories and meaning behind stained glass windows. \nEveryone will have the opportunity to write and share a sonnet of their own\, inspired by the stained glass windows and quiet atmosphere of the chapel.
