SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Glenn A. Knoblock (New England Shipbuilding) Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Glenn A. Knoblock for the new book New England Shipbuilding. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nFor more than four hundred years\, New England shipyards have contributed significantly to America’s maritime and naval supremacy. This compelling story is presented through the histories of seventy ships built from the colonial era down to modern times. Well-known vessels like the Constitution\, the Nautilus\, the Flying Cloud and the infamous whaleship Essex are included\, but so\, too\, are lesser-known ships\, including the ill-fated Wyoming and the far-ranging voyager Union. Every type of vessel is covered–their building or voyages making nautical news\, often in exciting fashion\, and their exploits filled with adventure\, danger\, tragedy and survival. Historian and author Glenn A. Knoblock explores the construction\, life and demise of these ships and details their contribution to our nation’s maritime heritage. \nAbout Glenn Knoblock\nGlenn Knoblock (1962-) is a native of Ohio with New England roots. After graduating with a BA in History from Bowling Green State University (Ohio)\, he moved to New Hampshire in 1984 and has been there ever since. In his numerous works he has explored unusual aspects of New Hampshire history. He has also specialized in African American military history\, both at the state and national level. His work “Strong and Brave Soldiers: New Hampshire’s Black Soldiers and Sailors of the American Revolution” has been called by one reviewer “a powerful\, uplifting\, and shameful story\, a profound tale”. Nationally\, Glenn is an expert on African Americans who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II\, as documented in his book “Black Submariners of the U.S. Navy”\, and has documented all known African American Naval\, Coast Guard\, and Merchant Marine casualties and award winners from WW II in yet another work. What drives Glenn in his choice of research and book topics? “Its all about recovering our lost history\, and documenting the achievements and contributions of notable individuals whose stories would otherwise be lost”. In continuing this mission\, Glenn has been a primary contributor\, in both print and online editions\, to the African American National Biography Project\, a collaborative work between Harvard and Oxford University Press. To date\, he has authored the biographies of over 100 significant African American military servicemen that have served from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War. \nGlenn and his wife Terry\, and their daughter Anna\, live in Wolfeboro Falls\, NH. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Roode Memorial Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us this summer for the Mystic & Noank Library’s annual Roode Memorial Concert Series. It’s a series of free outdoor concerts on the grounds of the Mystic & Noank Library. These concerts celebrate the lives of Mystic & Noank Library patrons Agnes and Carl Roode. The Roodes were longtime Mystic residents who loved music and the Library. Their family continues the tradition of honoring their legacy with a wonderful lineup of talented musicians in 2021. This summer’s series features three local musicians from different genres and musical stylings. Social distance guidelines will be in place for everyone’s safety. In the event of inclement weather\, the concert will take place indoors in the Spicer Reading Room. Indoor attendance will be limited and the library will welcome the first 25 guests to arrive. No registration is necessary. \nThor Jensen: Thursday\, June 17 at 6:30pm\nThor Jensen is a guitarist and singer based in New England. He’s been a member of the Stephane Wrembel Band since 2015\, performing the music of Django Reinhardt along with Wrembel’s original compositions all over the U.S. and the world\, on stage and in the studio. His solo shows blend his original music\, instrumentals\, and some of his favorite songs\, with a strong presence of the American songbook. In 2019\, Thor released an EP of original music\, and has another full length record to be released later this year. Find out more on his website: https://www.thorjensenmusic.com/ \nCraig Edwards: Thursday\, July 15 at 6:30pm\nCraig Edwards has been called a “walking encyclopedia of American roots music styles.” Playing fiddle\, guitar\, banjo\, mandolin\, button accordion\, and more\, he’s taken deep dives into Appalachian fiddle and banjo tunes\, Blues\, Cajun\, Chanteys\, Irish\, Zydeco\, and other musical styles that breathe life into the communities that created them. His performance will take listeners on a tour of American music on fiddle\, bano\, and guitar through the range of 19th and early 20th century styles that laid the groundwork for American popular music. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Read of The Day with David Handler (The Man Who Wasn't All There)
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The Day present a Read of The Day event with David Handler for the release of his new book\, The Man Who Wasn’t All There. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nThe latest installment of David Handler’s Edgar Award-winning Stewart Hoag mystery series\, set in 1990s’ New York\, sees the ghostwriter-sleuth and his faithful basset hound Lulu inadvertently make a dangerous enemy. \nAfter six glorious weeks of hard work on his long-overdue second novel\, celebrity-ghostwriter Stewart “Hoagy” Hoag has hit a crossroads in his plot. He thinks a change of scenery will do him good – and he knows just the place. His ex-wife\, the actress Merilee Nash\, has offered him the use of her idyllic Connecticut farmhouse\, while she’s away shooting a movie in Budapest. \nHoagy and his beloved basset hound Lulu settle in for a few days’ rest and relaxation. Hoagy expects fall splendor\, long walks and crisp night air. He doesn’t expect Merilee’s eccentric\, unwelcoming neighbor. Austin Talmadge warns Hoagy not to get on his bad side\, but what harm can a country oddball like Austin do? \nQuite a lot\, it turns out. All Hoagy wants to do is relax and clear his head\, but soon he’s caught up in a strange\, complex mystery – and he’ll need all his wits about him\, and Lulu’s unerring nose\, if he’s to come out of this one alive . . . \nAbout David Handler\nDavid Handler has written eleven novels about the witty and dapper celebrity ghostwriter Stewart Hoag and his faithful\, neurotic basset hound\, Lulu\, including the Edgar- and American Mystery Award-winning The Man Who Would Be F. Scott Fitzgerald. His other series include the Berger/Mitry franchise and two novels featuring private eye Benji Golden. David was a member of the original writing staff that created the Emmy Award-winning sitcom Kate and Allie\, and has continued to write extensively for television and films on both coasts. He lives in a 200-year-old carriage house in Old Lyme\, Connecticut. \nRegister

Check out our programming related booklists to start reading! \nNavigating Nonfiction: Write Compelling True Stories | Ruth Crocker\nMonday\, June 28 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM\nNonfiction writing (memoir\, autobiography\, personal essay\, journalism\, and more) is sometimes thought of as the stodgy\, boring stepsister of glittering\, exciting fiction. In fact\, the opposite is true. You can’t make this stuff up! It’s all in how you tell the story. This workshop will take you through the process of zeroing in on true stories and crafting them with the same tools and techniques that fiction writers use to bring words to life on the page. We’ll explore theme\, structure\, voice\, dialogue and more\, along with exercises for sourcing material from life experience. Read more about Ruth Crocker in her bio\, and her publications on her website. \nWriting Fiction: The Art of Storytelling | Susan Kietzman\nMonday\, July 12 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM\nA writer brings to a story unique perspective\, voice\, and imagination — all of which shape how the story is told. In this workshop\, we’ll explore the creation of fiction\, as well as dive into some key elements: character\, setting\, dialogue\, plot\, and point of view. We’ll talk about style\, discipline\, and what it takes to turn your idea into a novel. Be prepared to write\, discuss\, and learn from one another. Read more about Susan Kietzman in her bio\, and her publications on her website. \nWriting Through Trauma: Steps for Post Traumatic Growth | Regina Bartlett\nMonday\, July 26 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM \nPain. Anxiety. Fear. Depression. What if the source of your greatest struggle became the key to your freedom? This workshop will show you steps to take to look inward – in your own time – and discover how to use writing as a healing place and channel past pain points to forge a path for growth. Prompts will gently guide you to excavate your past\, and provide the tools to craft your story into something meaningful for others to read. Read more about Regina Bartlett in her bio\, and her publications and other speaking engagements on her website. \nGet Published with a Small Press | Leslie M Browning\nMonday\, August 2 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM \nYou’ve joined in our local authors writing workshop series\, you’ve started some stories of your own\, and now the question arises… How do I get published? Among many other options\, like finding an agent\, sending out query letters\, and self-publishing\, this program will help you explore an option you may not have considered before: publishing with a small press. Local author Leslie M Browning\, and founder of the small press Homebound Publications based in Stonington\, will close our local authors writing workshop series with this introduction to publishing with a small press: what they are\, the kinds of authors and stories they publish\, and how you can submit your work to them. Celebrate ten years of business operations for Homebound Publications and learn more about the important role small presses have in today’s publishing landscape. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Gary Grossman & Ed Fuller (Red Deception) Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Gary Grossman and Ed Fuller for their new book Red Deception. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nIntelligence experts and thriller authors concur: Red Deception is “A page-turner by authors who might as well sit on the National Security Council.” When terrorists bomb bridges across the country and threaten the Hoover Dam\, the vulnerability of America’s infrastructure becomes a matter of national security. But Dan Reilly\, a former Army intelligence officer\, predicted the attacks in a secret State Department report written years earlier—a virtual blueprint for disaster\, somehow leaked and now in the hands of foreign operatives. With Washington distracted by domestic crises\, Russian President Nicolai Gorshkov sends troops to the borders of Ukraine and Latvia\, ready to reclaim what he feels is Russia’s rightful territory. Tensions in Europe threaten to boil over as a besieged American president balances multiple crises that threaten to upend the geopolitical order. With the US at the mercy of an egomaniacal leader\, and reporters and covert agents on his tail\, Reilly may be the one man who can connect the dots before an even bigger catastrophe unfolds. Red Deception is the second book in the Red Hotel series. \nAbout the Authors\nGary Grossman’s first novel\, Executive Actions\, propelled him into the world of geopolitical thrillers. Executive Treason\, Executive Command\, and Executive Force further tapped Grossman’s experience as a journalist\, newspaper columnist\, documentary television producer\, reporter\, and media historian. In addition to the bestselling Executive series\, Grossman wrote the international award-winning Old Earth\, a geological thriller that spans all of time. With Red Hotel and Red Deception\, his collaborations with Ed Fuller\, Grossman entered a new realm of globe-hopping thriller writing. Ed Fuller is a hospitality industry leader\, educator\, and bestselling author. He is president of Irvine\, California-based Laguna Strategic Advisors\, a global consortium that provides business consulting services to corporations and governments. SUMMARY:Virtual Book Talk: Hannah McKinnon (Message in the Sand) Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Hannah McKinnon for the release of the new book Message in the Sand.\nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nAn emotional and unforgettable tale of a small town irrevocably affected by an unforeseen and shocking event—from the author of the “charming gem of a novel” (Elin Hilderbrand\, #1 New York Times bestselling author) Mystic Summer. \nWendell Combs is as local as they come. Born and raised in the small town of Saybrook\, Connecticut\, his venture into the larger world was met with heartbreak. Now\, middle-aged and a confirmed bachelor\, he seeks solitude from his tour of duty as a soldier back in his hometown\, working as head caretaker for wealthy Alan Lancaster’s forty-acre estate\, White Pines\, a place he has come to love for its beauty\, peace\, and quiet. \nAlan’s eldest daughter\, fifteen-year-old Julia\, also loves White Pines\, but for very different reasons. She and her little sister spend their days riding horses\, swimming in the lake\, and painting landscapes inspired by the property they adore. While her parents prepare to host their annual summer gala fundraiser\, Julia’s eyes are set to the simpler joys of summer: she’s fallen in love with the boy-next-door and longs for their next encounter. \nBut as the last guests leave on that magical summer night\, a tragedy no one could have predicted suddenly occurs\, shaking the entire town to its core. Wendell and Julia now face an uncertain future. At the height of their grief\, two very different women return to Saybrook: Ginny Feldman\, Wendell’s first love\, who cannot stay away any longer\, and Candace Lancaster\, Julia’s estranged aunt who wants nothing to do with the town or the family estate she escaped decades earlier. Now\, the only familiar things Julia has to cling to are Wendell and White Pines\, but it looks like she’s about to lose both… \nWith Hannah McKinnon’s “sharp and evocative” (Kirkus Reviews) prose\, this stirring and affecting tale explores the connection between people and place and what\, ultimately\, makes up the fabric of a family. \nAbout Hannah McKinnon\nHannah Roberts McKinnon is the award winning author of six women’s fiction and beach read novels with Simon and Schuster. Her titles include Message in the Sand\, The View From Here\, Sailing Lessons\, The Summer House\, Mystic Summer\, and The Lake Season. She previously published two YA novels\, Franny Parker and The Properties of Water\, with FSG/MacMillan. \nHannah lives in Fairfield County\, CT with her family. When not spending time with family and friends or writing in her home office she can be found in her backyard chasing chickens\, wrangling rescue dogs\, or at the lake. \nVisit her author website at www.hannahmckinnon.com\, on Instagram at @hannahmckinnonwrites and on Twitter at @hannahmckinnon
