SUMMARY:Adventure Series: Captain Geoffrey Jones: Saving Schooner ALVEI
DESCRIPTION:Captain Geoffrey Jones: Saving Schooner ALVEI\nThursday\, March 16\, 2023\n1:30 p.m. & 7 p.m.\nHilton Mystic \nJoin us for the story of the Schooner ALVEI\, as told by her rescuer and restorer\, Captain Geoffrey Jones. In 2019\, Captain Jones answered the call to salvage her from ruin in Fiji. With a combination of efforts from local crew and others from CT who flew to her rescue\, Alvei was finally seaworthy in early 2020. Captain Jones\, a professional sailor with over 40 years’ experience\, then began the long voyage half way around the world to bring her to her new home berth here in Noank\, CT. \nThe Many Lives of ALVEI: ALVEI was originally built as a herring drifter in Scotland in the 1920s and then was commandeered as a minesweeper during WWII. After the war\, she was rigged as a small coastal freighter then converted to a three-masted auxiliary schooner during the 1980s in Portugal. She embarked on a 40-year career as an educational vessel in the South Pacific before falling into disrepair in Fiji. \nAbout the Series: Adventure Series connects audiences with individuals who have extraordinary maritime stories to tell. This year’s series will take place in the Cutter Room at the Hilton Mystic\, with the exception of the April 21 program which will be held in the Masin Room at Mystic Seaport Museum. Hilton Mystic is located at 20 Coogan Blvd\, Mystic\, CT 06355. \nTickets can be purchased online or by calling the membership department at 860.572.5339. \nThe Adventure Series is sponsored by StoneRidge. \nRegister

SUMMARY:2023 Chowder Cook Off & Cabin Fever Festival
DESCRIPTION:18th Annual “Chowder Fest” at the Olde Mistick Village!\nFebruary 25th 12pm – 4pm\nPress Release \nOlde Mistick Village will take on the warm and welcome aroma of chowder as the village hosts their 18th annual Cabin Fever/Chowder Festival and Charity Cook-Off on Saturday\, February 25th\, 2023\, from 12 noon to 4 pm. \nAwards will be given at 5 pm. in the chapel to the restaurant winners. Always Home will be honored then and a check will be handed over to them at that time. \nNew this year\, OMV is giving out door prizes for those who have extra tickets. Door prizes will be announced at 4:30 p.m. at the gazebo. \nAll proceeds for this event benefit Always Home a non-profit service agency dedicated to preventing family homelessness throughout Eastern CT. For the past 20 years Always Home\, (Formally Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality M.A.S.H.)\, has provided case management services and emergency housing assistance to local families at risk of homelessness. Each year Always home prevents hundreds of families from becoming homeless and helps them sustain housing. Their organization believes it is always in the best interest of the family\, particularly young children\, to avoid the trauma of emergency shelter. That is why the mission focuses on preventing homelessness. Always Home\, works to find families safe\, secure housing with the supportive services necessary to achieve long-term housing stability. \nThis day will be filled with family fun and community support! Many of the area’s finest restaurants and caterers will serve up their signature chowder from the warmth of sponsorship shops in Olde Mistick Village. A team of local judges at the event will choose the winners in three categories 1) Most Creative Chowder 2) Heartiest Chowder 3) Best use of regional ingredients. The public will vote for the winner of the coveted “People’s Choice Award” for the Best Chowder Category. All awards will be presented in the meeting house/chapel\, in Olde Mistick Village at 5:00pm. \nChowder tickets are $2 for each 3 oz. cup of Chowder\, or you may purchase 12 tickets for just $20. Tickets will be on sale the day of the event throughout the village in various store locations. Tickets do not go on sale until 11:30 am. All proceeds from the event benefit Always Home. In the past 17 years Olde Mistick Village has donated $5\,000 to over $20\,000 in proceeds each year. We are so excited after having to take 2021 and 2022 off due to Covid/Corona Virus to be able to offer this much needed event for 2023. \nWith the generous participation of Olde Mistick Village Shops and Local Restaurants\, Always Home Volunteers\, Management of Olde Mistick Village\, and the support of our patrons and community\, the Cabin Fever and Charity Cook-Off will help many families in need. We hope you will join us in supporting this worthy cause.

SUMMARY:Owl Prowl
DESCRIPTION:It may be chilly outside\, but things heat up for owls in late winter! Hunting owls are easier to spot when the leaves are down on the trees\, and breeding begins in winter for many species\, so owl sightings and sounds are much more common! \nBring your family to learn more about Connecticut’s owls and meet one of our resident Animal Ambassador owls at the Nature Center. We’ll take a night walk to look and listen for owls at the Nature Center\, and teach you how to find owl signs in your own backyard! \nAdvanced registration is required. Meets at DPNC. \nMembers: $8.50; Non-members $10 \nRegister

SUMMARY:Online Birders Book Club with DPNC
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our new birding book club starting on February 22\, from 6-7 pm on Zoom. Our first book will be Kingbird Highway: The Biggest Year in the Life of an Extreme Birder by Kenn Kaufman. \nAt sixteen\, Kenn Kaufman dropped out of the high school where he was student council president and hit the road\, hitching back and forth across America\, from Alaska to Florida\, Maine to Mexico. Maybe not all that unusual a thing to do in the seventies\, but what Kenn was searching for was a little different: not sex\, drugs\, God or even self\, but birds. A report of a rare bird would send him hitching nonstop from Pacific to Atlantic and back again. When he was broke he would pick fruit or do odd jobs to earn the fifty dollars or so that would last him for weeks. His goal was to set a record – most North American species seen in a year – but along the way he began to realize that at this breakneck pace he was only looking\, not seeing. What had been a game became a quest for a deeper understanding of the natural world. Kingbird Highway is a unique coming-of-age story\, combining a lyrical celebration of nature with wild\, and sometimes dangerous\, adventures\, starring a colorful cast of characters. \nPlease register to receive the Zoom link for Birding Book Club.
