This intentional book club\, Mystic Conversations on Race (MyCOR)\, is intended for people who understand that the toxicity of historic and contemporary racism must be confronted…in our hearts\, in our minds\, and in our communities. \nWe are “restarting” in September because MyCOR “live” was shutdown after an initial meeting at the Mystic & Noank Library in February 2020 due to the pandemic. Events since have shown that the need to educate ourselves on racism in both historical and contemporary contexts is as important as ever. We are “intentional\,” as a book club\, because we “intend” that our reading\, discussion\, and reflection will lead to personal change and broader action. We will reboot virtually\, using the Google Classroom platform and meeting on a monthly basis for small group discussions via Zoom. \nIn this book club\, we will reflect on texts (fiction and nonfiction)\, films\, and podcasts on the origins of race\, the processes and effects of racism\, and on white complicity and supremacy. We will be reading (among others) Toni Morrison\, Ibram X. Kendi\, Isabel Wilkerson\, Dorothy Roberts\, Imani Perry\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Seasonal Celebration features Pumpkin Carving\, Jack-o-Lantern Walk\, and Children’s Costume Parade \nMystic Seaport Museum celebrates fall and Halloween this year with Halloween Happenings\, three family-friendly events spread over eight days\, with the highlight being a Jack-o-Lantern Walk through the Museum grounds. \nBeginning Monday\, October 26 and running through Friday\, October 30\, the Museum will transform its grounds into a spooky\, haunted trail lit by more than 500 jack-o-lanterns. At the end of the walk\, visitors can enjoy food and live music\, play a lawn game\, warm up by a roaring fire\, or join a small tour that explores the darker side of the Museum’s historic village. \nThe walk runs 5:30-9:00 p.m. each night. \nAdmission to the Jack-o-Lantern Walk is by a special ticket: \n\nAdults (ages 13 and up) $20.00\, Youth (ages 4-12) $15.00.\nMuseum members: Adult $17.50 and Youth $12.00.\n\nTickets may be purchased online at checkout.mysticseaport.org/all/tickets. \nPrior to the Jack-o-Lantern Walk\, the Museum will hold two days of public pumpkin carving where visitors can carve one or more pumpkins that will be displayed in the walk. Pumpkins and all tools will be provided\, and participants will receive a $2 discount coupon to be applied against admission to the walk. Carvers will be encouraged to come back and find their creation among the 500 jack-o-lanterns on display the following week.
