SUMMARY:Sharon Virts (Veil of Doubt) Author Talk & Signing
DESCRIPTION:Meet bestselling author Sharon Virts and hear as she reads from VEIL OF DOUBT. \nWhen a mother is charged with murder in a town already convinced of her guilt\, can defense attorney Powell Harrison find truth and justice in a legal system where innocence is not presumed? \nEmily Lloyd\, a young widow in Reconstruction-era Virginia\, is accused of poisoning her three-year-old daughter\, Maud. It isn’t the first death in her home—her husband and three other children all died of mysterious illnesses—so when Maud succumbs to an unexplained malady\, the town suspects foul play. Soon Mrs. Lloyd is charged not only with poisoning the child but also with murdering her children\, her husband\, and her aunt. \nEnter Powell Harrison\, a soft-spoken\, brilliant attorney who recently returned to his Virginia hometown to help his brother manage their late father’s practice. Approached to assist in Mrs. Lloyd’s defense\, Harrison initially declines\, worried that an infanticide case might tarnish their family’s reputation. But as details about the widow’s erratic behavior and her reclusive neighbors emerge\, Harrison begins to suspect that an even more sinister truth might lurk beneath the family’s horrible fate and finds himself irresistibly drawn to the case. \nBased on a shocking true story\, Veil of Doubt is part true-crime thriller\, part medical and legal procedural. Perfect for fans of Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace and filled with rich period detail gleaned from exhaustive research\, Veil of Doubt delves into the darkness of the South during Reconstruction\, exposing intrigue\, deception\, and death.

SUMMARY:BluesGrass: a Live Acoustic Performance
DESCRIPTION:The acoustic duo BluesGrass features two experienced musicians who have been steeped for many years in American roots music\, including blues\, old-time\, folk music\, and bluegrass (especially its “bluesy” side). Both are accomplished singers\, and their voices blend in close harmony along with strong and evocative instrumental accompaniment. They draw upon both contemporary and traditional sources\, and as their musical collaboration has deepened over the years they have broadened their repertoire to include “Americana\,” contemporary blues\, popular tunes (both new and old)\, and the very first rock and roll hit. As a result\, listeners enjoy a well-rounded acoustic music experience. \nMark White (guitar\, harmonica\, vocals) – Mark plays both fingerstyle and flat-picked guitar\, as well as harmonica\, and sings lead and tenor harmonies. Over the years Mark has played in several bands in Connecticut\, collaborating with some excellent musicians in the process. He has a deep appreciation for the many facets of American roots music and continues to search for songs that resonate with him and his listeners. Mark lives in Groton Long Point\, Connecticut. \nJon Swift (upright bass\, vocals) – Jon was a founding member of the popular Connecticut-based acoustic bluegrass band Traver Hollow\, playing and singing with that group for 13 years in the ‘80s and early ‘90s. His steady upright bass work\, as well as his lead and harmony vocals\, have been enjoyed by the many audiences who listened to Traver Hollow’s recorded albums and their live shows in Europe and Canada\, as well as much of the U.S. Jon sings lead and baritone harmonies and lives in Durham\, Connecticut.

SUMMARY:What We Write in the Shadows: A Gothic Fiction Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The gothic is the past returning to haunt us in the present. Yet like vampires and werewolves\, gothic stories can assume different shapes and forms: Bram Stoker’s Dracula involves a supernatural evil unleashed in contemporary England\, while the narrator of Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” is haunted simply by his own guilt. In this workshop\, join author and freelance writer Jackson Kuhl for an evening investigating the dark art of gothic fiction writing. We’ll look at some examples of classic gothic literature to inspire us\, then brainstorm ideas\, sketch a brief outline\, and craft a piece of gothic flash fiction to take home. \nAuthor Bio\nJackson Kuhl is the author of the gothic novels A Season of Whispers and the forthcoming The Island of Small Misfortunes\, as well as the Revolutionary War biography Samuel Smedley\, Connecticut Privateer. Kuhl’s journalism and essays have appeared in Atlas Obscura\, the Journal of the American Revolution\, National Geographic News\, and other publications. His short fiction has been published in Professor Charlatan Bardot’s Travel Anthology\, Black Static\, Horror Library\, Love Letters to Poe\, Nightscript\, and numerous anthologies. He lives in coastal Connecticut. Visit him online at jacksonkuhl.com.

SUMMARY:Genesis: A Poetry Group
DESCRIPTION:Genesis: the origin or coming into being of something \nCalling all poets\, poets-to-be\, contemporaries & contemplatives\, and admirers of the written word. Join us for a new poetry writing group that will meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6 PM in the Library’s Ames Room. Each meeting we will explore a new poem to read deeply together and parse out its images\, references\, poetic devices\, and possible meanings to cultivate a deeper appreciation for poetry. Then we will take the opportunity to generate our own writing in response to a prompt rooted in the poem we just read. Your responses do not need to be in meter or rhyme (or even have line breaks!) and sharing what you’ve written is not required. You are welcome to simply come listen and enjoy the musicality of language as well. \nThis group is facilitated by the Library’s Adult Services Programming Librarian\, Ery Caswell. Ery has started writing groups of various genres and styles for the last 5 years. His creative nonfiction and poems have been published in a handful of literary journals and prior to tripping & falling into public librarianship he was a writing tutor and instructor. He received his BA in Writing and in Politics from Ithaca College. If you have questions about this group or poems to recommend send them to him at ecaswell@mysticnoanklibrary.org.
