SUMMARY:Local Authors Writing Workshop: Memoir
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Mystic & Noank Library’s Local Authors Writing Workshop Series for the summer of 2023. This is the third year we’ve run the series as part of our adult summer reading program\, connecting readers and aspiring writers with authors who live in or near our community. You may attend each of these workshops either in person or virtually. You must register for each workshop separately. \nShaping Sculpture from Shrapnel: The Art of Writing Memoir with Ravi Shankar\nEditor Lee Gutkind has defined creative nonfiction as “true stories\, well told” and during our session we will explore both poles as relates to the art of memoir. How do we define truth\, particularly when it comes to the past\, trauma\, and the workings of fallible memory? What does it mean for that to be well told\, e.g.\, how might we use issues of craft (such as flashback\, foreshadowing\, dialogue\, description) and narrative structure in order to differentiate our writing from the diaristic and to create a world more surprising yet inevitable? We will look at examples from writers such as Mary Karr\, Tobias Wolff\, Ta-Nehisi Coates\, Tara Westover\, Michel de Montaigne\, and more. This will also be a generative workshop where we will begin working on a draft of life-writing that we can take home. Dr. Ravi Shankar has published 15 books\, including most recently the Connecticut Book Award finalist Correctional. \nBio\nDR. RAVI SHANKAR is a Pushcart prize-winning poet\, translator and professor who has published 15 books\, including the Muse India award-winning translations Andal: The Autobiography of a Goddess and The Many Uses of Mint: New and Selected Poems 1997-2017. Along with Tina Chang and Nathalie Handal\, he co-edited W.W. Norton’s Language for a New Century: Contemporary Poetry from the Middle East\, Asia & Beyond called “a beautiful achievement for world literature” by Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer. He has taught and performed around the world and appeared in print\, radio and TV in such venues as The New York Times\, NPR\, BBC and the PBS Newshour. He has won awards to the Corporation of Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony\, fellowships from the Rhode Island and Connecticut Counsel on the Arts\, founded one of the oldest electronic journals of the arts Drunken Boat\, is Chairman of the Asia Pacific Writers & Translators (APWT) and recently finished his PhD from the University of Sydney. His memoir “Correctional” was published in 2021 with University of Wisconsin Press and he teaches creative writing at Tufts University. Visit his website at: https://www.poetravishankar.com/

SUMMARY:Roode Concert Series: Connor Holdridge
DESCRIPTION:Join us this summer for the Mystic & Noank Library’s annual Roode Memorial Concert Series. It’s a series of free outdoor concerts on the grounds of the Mystic & Noank Library. These concerts celebrate the life of Mystic & Noank Library patrons Agnes and Carl Roode. The Roodes were longtime Mystic residents who loved music and the Library. Their family continues the tradition of honoring their legacy with a wonderful lineup of talented musicians in 2023. This summer’s series features three musicians from different genres and musical stylings. Please bring your own lawn chair\, blankets\, or other seating to your comfort level. In the event of rain\, indoor attendance will be limited\, and the Library will welcome the first 50 guests to arrive. \nPerformer Bio\nConnor Holdridge is a jazz guitarist\, composer and improvisor. \nAs versatile as he is gifted\, Connor easily maneuvers the various music scenes of D.C. and Baltimore\, to include his involvement in gypsy jazz group Ultrafaux\, jazz/Neo-soul band Attic Sessions and his work as a sideman for artists all around the area. \nNo stranger to the stage\, Connor has had the pleasure of performing around the nation with various notable acts\, including shows at The Kennedy Center with Nataly Merezhuk\, An Die Musik with Duved Dunayevsky\, and Blues Alley with Stephane Wrembel. He has also toured and played extensively as a part of gypsy jazz group Ultrafaux led by guitarist Michael Joseph Harris\, to include performances at the Midwest Gypsy Swing Fest\, Charm City Django Jazz Fest and an opening show for the National Symphony Orchestra. \nA promising young composer\, Connor has developed a body of work to be featured as a part of his residency at the Strathmore’s AMP in April of 2023. Reminiscent of gypsy jazz with a contemporary spin\, these acoustic pieces written for two guitars\, bass\, cajon and strings display Connor’s mastery of his instrument\, his embrace of Django’s music and his sensitivity to his surroundings.

SUMMARY:Sperm Whales: The Gentle Goliaths of the Oceans
DESCRIPTION:Gaelin Rosenwaks is a marine scientist\, explorer\, photographer\, filmmaker\, and author of Sperm Whales: The Gentle Goliaths of the Oceans. In celebration of Alexis Rockman’s Oceanus exhibition\, on June 15\, Rosenwaks joins us to recall her experience in the waters off Dominica\, where she observed—eye to eye—the close bond between mother and child firsthand. What she found is that these animals live in matriarchal family units made up of remarkable females that stay together for generations. Like elephants and humans\, they take care of one another. She was able to document them sleeping\, playing\, nursing\, and so much more about their vibrant lives both under the sea\, and above it. Her breathtaking photography and inspiring words – coupled with Alexis Rockman’s perspective of the undersea world in Oceanus – inspires viewers to help save whales for future generations. \nGaelin Rosenwaks began her career at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducting research in Antarctica and then earned her Master’s Degree in Coastal Environmental Management from Duke University researching Giant Bluefin Tunas. She has appeared as an expert and host on TV programs including on The Discovery Channel\, Science Channel\, CBS News\, and National Geographic Channel\, and is one of the few women to be featured on the cover of Outside Magazine. She now participates and conducts expeditions in every ocean to alert the public not only to the challenges facing the oceans\, but also to what science is doing to understand these changes. \nThis event is free for members and included in admission for non-members. Registration is required. Register Here
