SUMMARY:Virtual Program: Music for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:Many musicians had a close connection to birds. Richard Wagner owned two parrots. Other than music and trains\, Antonin Dvorak’s greatest passion was for his flock of pigeons. One pianist lived in a Paris apartment with 121 parrots and cockatoos (as well as two apes!). Gustav Mahler was an exception. He entrusted his wife Alma to find a summer cottage in the woods where there were no birds so he could compose in silence. \nA large number of composers have been inspired by bird song since at least Clemens Non Papa (death around 1556) and his “Reveil des Oiseaux.” During the following centuries\, much music was written about cuckoos\, cockerels\, ducks\, larks\, magpies\, nightingales\, owls\, parrots\, swans\, wood doves and unhatched chicks. \nJeffrey Engel will present several musical works by bird loving composers of the past 400 years in this musical celebration of this year’s Summer Reading theme: Tails & Tales. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. You will receive a Zoom invitation the morning of the program.

SUMMARY:Book Party Launch at Savoy Bookshop: Debbi Michiko Florence (Just Be Cool\, Jenna Sakai)
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents a book launch party with Debbi Michiko Florence for the release of the new book Just Be Cool\, Jenna Sakai! This is going to be an incredible event featuring the chance to win great prizes\, a wonderful author talk and Q&A\, and special treats! \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nFans of Lisa Greenwald and Wendy Mass are sure to fall head-over-heels for this funny\, sweet story of crushes\, competition\, and the confusing reality of middle school. \n“Heartbreak is for suckers.” \nWhen Jenna Sakai gets dumped over winter break\, it confirms what she learned from her parents’ messy divorce: Relationships are risky and only lead to disappointment. So even though she still has to see her ex-boyfriend Elliott at newspaper club\, Jenna is going to be totally heartless this semester — no boys\, just books. \nBut keeping her cool isn’t always easy. Jenna’s chief competition for a big journalism scholarship is none other than Elliott. Her best friend Keiko always seems busy with her own boyfriend. And cute-but-incredibly-annoying Rin Watanabe keeps stealing her booth at the diner she’s been hiding at every day after school. Rin is every bit as stubborn and detached as Jenna. And the more Jenna gets to know him\, the more intriguing a mystery he seems. Soon Jenna is starting to realize that being a loner is kind of\, well\, lonely. And letting people in might just be a risk worth taking. \nAbout Debbi Michiko Florence\nDebbi Michiko Florence is the author of Keep It Together\, Keiko Carter\, a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection and New England Book Award finalist\, and the Jasmine Toguchi chapter books. A third-generation Japanese American and native Californian\, Debbi lives in Connecticut with her husband\, rescue dog\, rabbit\, and duck. Visit her online at debbimichikoflorence.com.

Light refreshments will also be offered. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nThe teenage son of a hetaera (woman of pleasure)\, Pheidippides and his beautiful young mother are not recognized as citizens of ancient Athens. Yet he is enchanted with the essence of the grand city-state and all the promise it holds. His short daily runs are on mere delivery errands\, but he aspires to one day be among the elite foot couriers who run up to fifty miles on vital missions of state. When an impending invasion from faraway Persia\, the world’s most powerful empire–led by a temperamental tyrant bent on destroying democracy–threatens Athens and the entire land of squabbling Greek city-states\, Pheidippides must undertake a grueling solitary trek to outrun enemy ships heading for his beloved city. Chased by assassins over a distance more than four times his usual runs\, can he save Athens and its fledgling democratic ideals…and at what cost? \nAbout Nicholas Checker\nNicholas Checker has two more published novels through another traditional publication company: Scratch and Druids\, Oak Tree Press\, CA; a stream of short stories that includes Shenandoah Magazine at Washington & Lee University; and an impressive number of independent films including the award winning short\, The Curse of Micah Rood\, starring former sitcom star\, Ron Palillo from the old Welcome Back Kotter TV series; and stage plays Elegy for an Icon — regarding the controversial John Mason Statue and the Pequot War — first performed at the Eugene O’Neill Theater; and his musical stage play\, Run to Elysia (music by Rick Spencer)\, also first performed at the Eugene O’Neill Theater … the very work from which Checker adapted The Saga of Marathon. \nSpecial guest speaker will be Mystic’s own Amby Burfoot — former Boston Marathon winner (protege of Mystic’s Johnny Kelley\, Boston Marathon winner and whose statue graces downtown Mystic); Amby has also gone to Greece and run the very same Marathon course as the legendary Pheidippides; and is the retired executive editor of Runner’s World Magazine; Amby is now a freelance writer with several books out and is still running. \nAlso included at the event will be songwriter & musician\, Rick Spencer who wrote the music & lyrics for the stage play written by Nicholas Checker\, Run to Elysia which premiered some years ago at the Eugene O’Neill Theater in Waterford. Checker adapted The Saga of Marathon novel from this play. Spencer will play and sing songs from Run to Elysia as the crowd files into the book store and is getting seated … and will also provide a soft instrumental backdrop to portions of Checker’s dramatic readings from his book. SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Read of the Day with Steven Rowley (The Guncle)
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The Day present a Read of the Day event with Steven Rowley for the new book\, The Guncle.\nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nAbout the Book\nFrom the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus and The Editor comes a warm and deeply funny novel about a once-famous gay sitcom star whose unexpected family tragedy leaves him with his niece and nephew for the summer. \nPatrick\, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP\, for short)\, has always loved his niece\, Maisie\, and nephew\, Grant. That is\, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits\, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children\, no matter how adorable\, Patrick is\, honestly\, overwhelmed. \nSo when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick’s brother has a health crisis of his own\, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of “Guncle Rules” ready to go\, Patrick has no idea what to expect\, having spent years barely holding on after the loss of his great love\, a somewhat-stalled acting career\, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to a six- and a nine-year-old. Quickly realizing that parenting–even if temporary–isn’t solved with treats and jokes\, Patrick’s eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility\, and the realization that\, sometimes\, even being larger than life means you’re unfailingly human. \nWith the humor and heart we’ve come to expect from bestselling author Steven Rowley\, The Guncle is a moving tribute to the power of love\, patience\, and family in even the most trying of times. \nAbout the Author\nSteven Rowley is the author of The Editor and the national bestseller Lily and the Octopus\, which has been translated into nineteen languages. He has worked as a freelance writer\, newspaper columnist\, and screenwriter. Originally from Portland\, Maine\, Rowley is a graduate of Emerson College. He lives in Palm Springs\, California.

SUMMARY:10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's: Early Detection Matters
DESCRIPTION:The warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease are often dismissed as side effects of normal aging. If you or someone you know is experiencing memory loss or behavioral changes\, it’s time to learn the facts. Early detection gives you a chance to begin drug therapy\, enroll in clinical studies\, and plan for the future. Attend this workshop training to learn the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s disease. We’ll separate myth from reality and address commonly-held fears about Alzheimer’s in America. Hear from people who have the disease and find out how to recognize the signs in yourself and others. This workshop will be led and instructed by a representative from the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. Unvaccinated people must wear a mask in the building. Fully vaccinated people are not required to wear a mask. Out of respect for many who visit the library\, we ask that you continue to wear a mask while attending in-person programs. Choosing to do so will make a safer environment for all\, especially children and those with compromised or weakened immune systems. Thank you for your consideration.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Emily Adrian (The Second Season)
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Emily Adrian for the new book The Second Season. Emily will be in conversation with Rufi Thorpe (The Knockout Queen). \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nAbout the Book\nRuth Devon starred for Georgetown Basketball back in college — until she injured her knee\, married her coach\, and found a new career calling games on the radio. Twenty years later\, Ruth and her now-ex-husband\, Lester\, are two of the most famous faces in sports media. When Lester decides to retire from the announcers’ booth\, Ruth goes after his job. If she gets it\, she will be the first woman to call NBA games on national television. \nFor now\, Ruth is reporting from the sideline of the NBA finals\, immersed in the high-pressure spectacle of the post-season. But in a deserted locker room at halftime\, Ruth makes a discovery that shatters her vision of her future. Instantly\, she is torn between the two things she has always wanted most: the game and motherhood. \nWith warmth and incisive observation\, Adrian brings to life the obsessions\, emotions\, and drama of fandom. The Second Season asks why\, how\, and whom we watch\, while offering a rich and complicated account of motherhood\, marriage\, and ambition. Adrian’s character study of Ruth Devon illuminates a beautiful basketball mind — and the struggle of a woman who claims authority in a male-dominated world. \nAbout the Authors\nEmily Adrian is the author of two critically acclaimed young adult novels\, Like It Never Happened and The Foreseeable Future. Everything Here Is under Control is her first adult novel. She lives in New Haven\, Connecticut\, with her husband\, her son\, and their dog\, Hank. \nRufi Thorpe received her MFA from the University of Virginia in 2009. She is the author of Dear Fang\, with Love and The Girls from Corona del Mar\, which was long listed for the 2014 International Dylan Thomas Prize and for the 2014 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize. A native of California\, she currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and sons.

DESCRIPTION:Join us this summer for the Mystic & Noank Library’s annual Roode Memorial Concert Series. It’s a series of free outdoor concerts on the grounds of the Mystic & Noank Library. These concerts celebrate the lives of Mystic & Noank Library patrons Agnes and Carl Roode. The Roodes were longtime Mystic residents who loved music and the Library. Their family continues the tradition of honoring their legacy with a wonderful lineup of talented musicians in 2021. This summer’s series features three local musicians from different genres and musical stylings. Social distance guidelines will be in place for everyone’s safety. In the event of inclement weather\, the concert will take place indoors in the Spicer Reading Room. Indoor attendance will be limited and the library will welcome the first 25 guests to arrive. He’s been a member of the Stephane Wrembel Band since 2015\, performing the music of Django Reinhardt along with Wrembel’s original compositions all over the U.S. and the world\, on stage and in the studio. His solo shows blend his original music\, instrumentals\, and some of his favorite songs\, with a strong presence of the American songbook. In 2019\, Thor released an EP of original music\, and has another full length record to be released later this year. SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Megan Collins (The Family Plot)
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Megan Collins for the release of the new book The Family Plot. Megan will be in conversation with Megan Miranda. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nCopies of The Family Plot purchased through the event will come with a signed bookplate while supplies last. \nAbout the Book\nWhen a family obsessed with true crime gathers to bury their patriarch\, horrifying secrets are exposed upon the discovery of another body in his grave in this chilling novel from the author of Behind the Red Door and The Winter Sister. \nAt twenty-six\, Dahlia Lighthouse remains haunted by her upbringing. Raised in a secluded island mansion deep in the woods and kept isolated by her true crime-obsessed parents\, she has been unable to move beyond the disappearance of her twin brother\, Andy\, when they were sixteen. \nAfter several years away and following her father’s death\, Dahlia returns to the house where the family soon makes a gruesome discovery: buried in their father’s plot is another body—Andy’s\, his skull split open with an ax. \nDahlia is quick to blame Andy’s murder on the serial killer who terrorized the island for decades\, while the rest of the Lighthouses react to the revelation in unsettling ways. Her brother\, Charlie\, pours his energy into creating a family memorial museum\, highlighting their research into the lives of famous murder victims; her sister\, Tate\, forges ahead with her popular dioramas portraying crime scenes; and their mother affects a cheerfully domestic facade\, becoming unrecognizable as the woman who performed murder reenactments for her children. As Dahlia grapples with her own grief and horror\, she realizes that her eccentric family\, and the mansion itself\, may hold the answers to what happened to her twin. \nAbout Megan Collins\nMegan Collins is the author of Behind the Red Door and The Winter Sister. She has taught creative writing for many years at both the high school and college level and is the managing editor of 3Elements Literary Review. She lives in Connecticut. \nAbout Megan Miranda\nMegan Miranda is the New York Times bestselling author of All the Missing Girls\, The Perfect Stranger\, The Last House Guest\, a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick\, and The Girl from Widow Hills.
