SUMMARY:The 22nd International Sea Glass Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 22nd International Sea Glass Festival returns to the Museum’s Village Green for a vibrant two-day celebration of sea and beach glass\, set against a classic coastal New England backdrop. Widely recognized as the nation’s premier event dedicated to authentic sea and beach glass\, the festival brings together artists\, collectors\, experts\, and enthusiasts from around the world. \nExplore work by more than 50 juried artisans\, craftspeople\, and authors; browse the Collectors Showcase on Saturday; attend engaging lectures in the Clagett Boat Shed; and submit your own treasured finds to Sunday’s popular sea glass contest\, featuring multiple award categories. Family-friendly activities add to the festive atmosphere throughout the weekend. \nA portion of festival proceeds supports local shoreline restoration and preservation efforts. Presented in partnership with the International Sea Glass Association\, the event celebrates naturally weathered sea glass while advocating for healthy coastlines worldwide. \nThe International Sea Glass Association is a non-profit organization founded in 2005 to support sea and beach glass collectors around the world. This premier organization is unique as it aims to educate the collector\, consumer\, and retailer about the properties\, benefits\, and value of genuine\, pure\, unaltered sea and beach glass. \nGet Tickets

SUMMARY:Josh Weil (What Came West) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Josh Weil for his book\, What Came West. Josh will be in conversation with Stuart Vyse. \nAbout the Book \nA gripping tale of murder and pursuit set against the shifting Sierra Nevada during the Gold Rush\, where ambition\, violence\, and destiny collide. \n“What Came West is astonishing. Unraveling the mythology of the Western with a genius for insight and description\, Weil tells the story anew: a beautiful\, ruminative\, bloody\, terrifying and brilliant book about a chapter in the life of one man and in the life of our country. Unmissable.” —Andrew Sean Greer\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Less \nSierra Nevada\, 1840s\, just before the Gold Rush ignites. Silas Hall has never belonged anywhere except the wild. Bullied as a child and uneasy even within his own family\, he finds brief solace in love and fatherhood before the pull of the frontier overwhelms him. One day he heads west\, chasing a life that might finally make sense. \nWhat follows is a swift\, pulse-pounding journey into the mountains\, where Silas becomes one of the first white settlers to cross into the Sierra Nevada. He forges a precarious peace with the Indigenous people who live there—until the Gold Rush crashes in with violent force. As thousands flood the region\, the balance shatters\, and Silas commits murder\, a desperate act that alters the course of every life around him\, including his own. \nTaut and propulsive\, What Came West is told in two parallel voices—one a tense\, third-person account of Silas on the run\, and the other a confessional letter from Silas to the son he left behind—and confronts many different forms of American inheritance\, in all its danger\, emotional voltage\, and mythic momentum. Weil’s masterpiece is a fierce\, heart-driven portrait of an outsider racing toward belonging and barreling headlong into consequence. \nAbout the Author \nJosh Weil is the author of the novel The Great Glass Sea\, the novella collection The New Valley\, and the story collection The Age of Perpetual Light. He is a Fulbright fellow and has been awarded the Dayton Literary Peace Prize\, the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, a “5 Under 35” award from the National Book Foundation\, the California Book Award\, and a Pushcart Prize. For the past dozen years\, he has called the Sierra Nevada of Northern California home. \nAbout Stuart Vyse \nStuart Vyse is a behavioral scientist\, teacher\, and writer. He is a contributing editor for Skeptical Inquirer magazine\, for which he writes the “Behavior & Belief” column\, both online and in print. He has written personal and professional essays in a variety of places\, including the Observer\, Medium\, The Atlantic\, The Good Men Project\, Tablet\, and Time. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Writers Group
DESCRIPTION:We welcome local writers for free-write sessions at 4 p.m.\, Mondays\, in the Ames Room. The sessions are open to anyone who feels like writing. \nLoosely based on the notion of stream-of-consciousness writing described by Natalie Goldberg in “Writing Down the Bones\,” the sessions are broken into three parts of 5 minutes\, 10 minutes\, and 5 minutes. A writer selects a topic from subjects previously placed in a box. For the first 5 minutes\, write whatever comes to mind. Don’t stop to correct\, just record whatever pops into your head\, even if it’s something like\, “I have no idea what to write…” Each person shares what they’ve written\, free of commentary or criticism. \nThen\, for 10 minutes\, writers write what comes to mind\, perhaps an idea or a subject someone had just read aloud or something you wrote in the first 5 minutes will lead to a focus. The group shares again. Writers write for another 5 minutes and then share. \nYou’ll be surprised at the places you’ll go with the topics in these sessions. They give you an opportunity to express yourself\, they’re therapeutic\, and they often lead to a lot to talk about after putting your pens down.

Features an introduction to the printing press (certification for members) \nThis beginner-friendly class is an introduction to drypoint\, an engraving method where an image is drawn into a printing plate with sharp tools. No chemicals are needed to create beautiful intaglio prints that can range from precise and delicate to bold and graphic. This class will take you through the entire process of creating and printing drypoints from a plastic plate. You’ll learn how to prepare the plate\, use the tools\, ink\, and print on an etching press. \nPlease come prepared with a 5 x 7 image that you will trace over using a sharp tool. The image will be created using a series of lines\, so keeping it simple will allow enough time to complete the whole process during class time. \nCertification for Members- Printing Press \nMEMBERS- Because of generous donations from the Frank Loomis Palmer Fund\, Bank of America\, N.A.\, Trustee\, the price of our certification classes has been greatly subsidized\, making them more accessible to our membership. \nGet Tickets Today! \n$25 for Spark members; $63 for the public \nClass Fee is non-refundable.
