SUMMARY:Digital Program: Hooking the Reader: Polishing Your First Line and First Page
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the elements of a good opening for a story: how to hook the reader and how to get them to turn from the first page to the second. Once they’ve done that\, they’ve committed to your story! We’ll talk about what a good first line is and write one\, how to keep the tension high\, how to introduce character and setting. Writers with works-in-progress are encouraged to send their first pages\, so we can share and workshop them together. Other examples will also be provided. Be prepared to write\, discuss\, and learn from one another. \nSpeaker Bio\nLaurel S. Peterson is a Professor of English at Norwalk Community College. Her poetry has been published in many small literary journals. She has two poetry chapbooks: That’s the Way the Music Sounds\, from Finishing Line Press (2009) and Talking to the Mirror from The Last Automat Press (2010). A full length collection of poetry\, Do You Expect Your Art to Answer You? was released by Futurecycle Press in 2017. She served as poet laurete of Norwalk\, CT from April 2016 – April 2019. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. You will receive a Zoom invitation the morning of the program.

SUMMARY:Stephen Kurczy (The Quiet Zone) Author Talk and Q&A at Savoy Bookshop & Café
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Stephen Kurczy for the new book\, The Quiet Zone. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nA stunning portrait of an Appalachian community\, the people who call it home\, and the enduring human quest for quiet \nDeep in the Appalachian Mountains lies the last truly quiet town in America. Green Bank\, West Virginia\, is a place at once futuristic and old-fashioned: It’s home to the Green Bank Observatory\, where astronomers search the depths of the universe using the latest technology\, while schoolchildren go without WiFi or iPads. With a ban on all devices emanating radio frequencies that might interfere with the observatory’s telescopes\, Quiet Zone residents live a life free from constant digital connectivity. But a community that on the surface seems idyllic is a place of contradictions\, where the provincial meets the seemingly supernatural and quiet can serve as a cover for something darker. \nStephen Kurczy embedded in Green Bank\, making the residents of this small Appalachian village his neighbors. He shopped at the town’s general store\, attended church services\, went target shooting with a seven-year-old\, square-danced with the locals\, sampled the local moonshine. In The Quiet Zone\, he introduces us to an unforgettable cast of characters. There is a tech buster patrolling the area for illegal radio waves; “electrosensitives” who claim that WiFi is deadly; a sheriff’s department with a string of unsolved murder cases dating back decades; a camp of neo-Nazis plotting their resurgence from a nearby mountain hollow. Amongst them all are the ordinary citizens seeking a simpler way of living. Kurczy asks: Is a less connected life desirable? Is it even possible? \nThe Quiet Zone is a remarkable work of investigative journalism—at once a stirring ode to place\, a tautly-wound tale of mystery\, and a clarion call to reexamine the role technology plays in our lives. \nAbout Stephen Kurczy\nStephen Kurczy is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, and The Christian Science Monitor\, among other outlets. He graduated from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism\, where he was a 2016-2017 Knight-Bagehot Fellow in Business and Economics Journalism. Kurczy has lived without a cell phone for over a decade.

SUMMARY:A Journey to the Future with authors Kathryn Hulick and Kelly Weinersmith Virtual Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present a Journey to the Future author talk and Q&A with authors Kathryn Hulick (Welcome to the Future) and Kelly Weinersmith (Soonish). \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nThe New York Times bestseller Soonish and the newly released kids’ book Welcome to the Future both take readers on a journey through technologies that may transform our world. The authors of these two futuristic titles will talk about the future and answer your questions in an event that is perfect for families. Older teens and adults will love the humor and insightful visions of Soonish\, created by Kelly Weinersmith\, a biologist who studies parasites\, and her husband Zach Weinersmith\, who is a cartoonist and the creator of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal Comics. Kids and teens in middle school and high school will enjoy the fascinating technology and deep questions posed by Welcome to the Future\, written by Kathryn Hulick and illustrated by Marci Wolski. \nAbout Welcome to the Future\nHave you ever wondered what the future may look like? In this book\, you’ll explore 10 ways technology could alter our way of life. The challenge for you is to decide which changes you want for yourself and the world. \nIn the future\, will we teleport from place to place\, keep dinosaurs as pets\, or 3D-print our dinner? Will we live on Mars or upload our brains to computers? Could we solve climate change by making all our energy from mini stars we build here on earth? In this book\, you’ll meet the scientists working to bring science fiction to life and learn how soon we might have amazing new technology. You’ll also delve deep into questions about right and wrong. Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should. How can we build the best possible future for everyone on Earth? \nAbout Soonish\nFrom a top scientist and the creator of the hugely popular web comic Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal\, a hilariously illustrated investigation into future technologies — from how to fling a ship into deep space on the cheap to 3D organ printing\nWhat will the world of tomorrow be like? How does progress happen? And why do we not have a lunar colony already? What is the hold-up? \nIn this smart and funny book\, celebrated cartoonist Zach Weinersmith and noted researcher Dr. Kelly Weinersmith give us a snapshot of what’s coming next — from robot swarms to nuclear fusion powered-toasters. By weaving their own research\, interviews with the scientists who are making these advances happen\, and Zach’s trademark comics\, the Weinersmiths investigate why these technologies are needed\, how they would work\, and what is standing in their way. New technologies are almost never the work of isolated geniuses with a neat idea. A given future technology may need any number of intermediate technologies to develop first\, and many of these critical advances may appear to be irrelevant when they are first discovered. The journey to progress is full of strange detours and blind alleys that tell us so much about the human mind and the march of civilization. \nTo this end\, Soonish investigates ten different emerging fields\, from programmable matter to augmented reality\, from space elevators to robotic construction\, to show us the amazing world we will have\, you know\, soonish. \nAbout Kathryn Hulick\nKathryn Hulick is an author\, freelance writer\, and former Peace Corps volunteer. She writes regularly for Science News for Students and Muse magazine. Her books cover topics such as video games\, artificial intelligence\, dinosaurs\, and more. STRANGE BUT TRUE (Quarto\, 2019) explores the science behind paranormal mysteries. Hulick’s favorite part of writing about science is getting to speak with researchers in many different fields. Once\, she spoke with an expert on parallel universes while he was shoveling snow from his driveway. Another time\, she called a biologist who was out in the field in Africa\, watching a herd of elephants. In addition to writing\, she enjoys hiking\, gardening\, painting and reading. Hulick lives in Massachusetts with her husband\, son and dog. \nAbout Kelly Weinersmith\nDr. Kelly Weinersmith received her PhD in Ecology at the University of California Davis\, and is an adjunct faculty member in the BioSciences department at Rice University. Kelly studies parasites that manipulate the behavior of their hosts\, and her research has been featured in The Atlantic\, National Geographic\, BBC World\, Science\, and Nature. When she isn’t studying Nature’s creepiest wonders\, Kelly is writing books with her husband\, Zach Weinersmith (creator of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal Comics). Their first book\, Soonish: Ten Emerging Technologies That’ll Improve and/or Ruin Everything\, was a NYTimes Bestseller. Their next book is about the future of humans in space\, and will be published through Penguin Press.

SUMMARY:Lynne Reeves (The Dangers of an Ordinary Night) Author Talk and Q&A with Jeanne Blasberg at Savoy Bookshop & Café
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Lynne Reeves for the new book\, The Dangers of an Ordinary Night. Lynne will be in conversation with local author Jeanne Blasberg (Eden: A Novel\, The Nine). \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nPerfect for fans of Celeste Ng and Megan Abbott\, Lynne Reeves’ The Dangers of an Ordinary Night is an exploration of the explosive family secrets that are often hidden in plain sight. \nOn a chilly fall evening at the prestigious Performing Arts High School of Boston\, best friends Tali Carrington and June Danforth go missing after auditioning for a play. They’re last seen in grainy\, out-of-focus surveillance footage that shows them walking away from the school. Two days later in a town south of Boston\, Tali is found disoriented and traumatized by the ocean’s edge\, while June is pronounced dead at the scene. \nTali’s mother\, Nell\, is so bent on protecting her daughter from further emotional harm that she ignores rumors of her husband’s involvement and enlists the help of Cynthia Rawlins\, a reunification therapist with personal insight into the riptide that hides below the surface of every unsuspecting family. Meanwhile\, Detective Fitz Jameson uncovers a criminal undertow involving the high school’s overachieving students\, and finally sees an opportunity for personal redemption from a secret that’s haunted him for years. \nAs Nell\, Cynthia\, and Fitz confront their own contributions to the scandals that beleaguer them\, their lives turn out to be more deeply intertwined than they’d ever imagined. In the end\, they must decide what lengths they’re willing to go to protect the people they love while also saving themselves. \nAbout Lynne Reeves\nLynne Reeves is an internationally recognized family counselor and novelist. Her short fiction\, essays\, and articles have appeared in Parents\, Psychology Today\, Solstice Literary Magazine\, Chautauqua Journal\, Craft Literary\, Fiction Writers Review\, Brain\, Child and more. Lynne regularly appears as a media guest expert to discuss contemporary family life and preventive mental health. This is her first novel of domestic suspense. \nAbout Jeanne Blasberg\nJeanne Blasberg is the author of Eden: A Novel\, winner of the Beverly Hills Book Awards for Women’s Fiction and finalist for the Benjamin Franklin Award for Best New Voice in Fiction and Sarton Women’s Book Award for Historical Fiction. Blasberg founded the Westerly Memoir Project. She sits on the board of the Boston Book Festival and Grub Street\, one of the country’s preeminent creative writing centers\, where she enjoys being part of a community of enthusiastic learners. She and her husband have three grown children and split time between Boston\, MA and Westerly\, RI.

DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents storytime and Q&A with Winsome Bingham for the new book\, Soul Food Sunday! \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nOn Sundays\, everyone gathers at Granny’s for soul food.\nBut today\, I don’t go to the backyard or the great room.\nI follow Granny instead.\n“You’re a big boy now”\, Granny says. “Time for you to learn.” \nAt Granny’s\, Sunday isn’t Sunday without a big family gathering over a lovingly prepared meal. Old enough now\, our narrator is finally invited to help cook the dishes for the first time: He joins Granny in grating the cheese\, cleaning the greens\, and priming the meat for Roscoe Ray’s grill. But just when Granny says they’re finished\, her grandson makes his own contribution\, sweetening this Sunday gathering – and the many more to come. \nEvocative and vivid\, this mouthwatering story is a warm celebration of tradition and coming together at a table filled with love and delicious food. \nAbout Winsome Bingham\nWinsome Bingham is a soul food connoisseur\, master cook\, and a US Army war and disabled veteran. She received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education with more than 15 years of teaching experience. You can find her writing on a deck while waiting patiently with a camera to capture a submarine shooting out of the water. She lives in Groton\, Connecticut.
