SUMMARY:Sperm Whales: The Gentle Goliaths of the Oceans
DESCRIPTION:Gaelin Rosenwaks is a marine scientist\, explorer\, photographer\, filmmaker\, and author of Sperm Whales: The Gentle Goliaths of the Oceans. In celebration of Alexis Rockman’s Oceanus exhibition\, on June 15\, Rosenwaks joins us to recall her experience in the waters off Dominica\, where she observed—eye to eye—the close bond between mother and child firsthand. What she found is that these animals live in matriarchal family units made up of remarkable females that stay together for generations. Like elephants and humans\, they take care of one another. She was able to document them sleeping\, playing\, nursing\, and so much more about their vibrant lives both under the sea\, and above it. Her breathtaking photography and inspiring words – coupled with Alexis Rockman’s perspective of the undersea world in Oceanus – inspires viewers to help save whales for future generations. \nGaelin Rosenwaks began her career at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducting research in Antarctica and then earned her Master’s Degree in Coastal Environmental Management from Duke University researching Giant Bluefin Tunas. She has appeared as an expert and host on TV programs including on The Discovery Channel\, Science Channel\, CBS News\, and National Geographic Channel\, and is one of the few women to be featured on the cover of Outside Magazine. She now participates and conducts expeditions in every ocean to alert the public not only to the challenges facing the oceans\, but also to what science is doing to understand these changes. \nThis event is free for members and included in admission for non-members. Registration is required. Register Here

SUMMARY:Marc Stone
DESCRIPTION:Marc Stone has been a standout presence in the New Orleans Roots music since the 1990s. A stylistic chameleon\, he has released 4 albums of original music and toured extensively in the US and Europe. When he’s not on stage or in the studio\, Marc can be found behind the mic at New Orleans’ iconic radio sender\, WWOZ 90.7-fm\, celebrating 20 years hosting his weekly “Soul Serenade” or spinning fine and funky vinyl at clubs and events. \nMaking the best of the pandemic shutdown\, Stone went to work on a new album to follow up 2019’s solo outing “Live at Tipitina’s”\, which garnered him nominations from New Orleans top cultural publications for both Best Blues Album and Best Blues Performer. \nThe result is “Shining Like A Diamond”\, his first full-length studio release since 2015. Stone draws inspiration from every corner. He also taps a well-spring of legends to bring his songs to life\, including Papa Mali\, Alvin “Youngblood” Hart\, Marilyn Barbarin\, Leo Nocentelli\, Reggie Scanlan\, the late Alfred “Uganda” Roberts\, Meschiya Lake\, James Singleton\, Mike Dillon\, and George Porter\, Jr. \nWe welcome Marc Stone to the Hygienic Art Park on Thursday\, June 1st for a night of Southern New Orleans blues and soul. Buy your tickets now for this highly anticipated 90 minute show! \nDate: Thursday\, June 1st at 8 PM \nLocation: 79 Bank Street\, New London CT 06320 (Frank Loomis Palmer Amphitheater) \nGates Open: 7 PM\nShowtime: 8 PM
