SUMMARY:Adventure Series: Captain Geoffrey Jones: Saving Schooner ALVEI
DESCRIPTION:Captain Geoffrey Jones: Saving Schooner ALVEI\nThursday\, March 16\, 2023\n1:30 p.m. & 7 p.m.\nHilton Mystic \nJoin us for the story of the Schooner ALVEI\, as told by her rescuer and restorer\, Captain Geoffrey Jones. In 2019\, Captain Jones answered the call to salvage her from ruin in Fiji. With a combination of efforts from local crew and others from CT who flew to her rescue\, Alvei was finally seaworthy in early 2020. Captain Jones\, a professional sailor with over 40 years’ experience\, then began the long voyage half way around the world to bring her to her new home berth here in Noank\, CT. \nThe Many Lives of ALVEI: ALVEI was originally built as a herring drifter in Scotland in the 1920s and then was commandeered as a minesweeper during WWII. After the war\, she was rigged as a small coastal freighter then converted to a three-masted auxiliary schooner during the 1980s in Portugal. She embarked on a 40-year career as an educational vessel in the South Pacific before falling into disrepair in Fiji. \nAbout the Series: Adventure Series connects audiences with individuals who have extraordinary maritime stories to tell. This year’s series will take place in the Cutter Room at the Hilton Mystic\, with the exception of the April 21 program which will be held in the Masin Room at Mystic Seaport Museum. Hilton Mystic is located at 20 Coogan Blvd\, Mystic\, CT 06355. \nTickets can be purchased online or by calling the membership department at 860.572.5339. \nThe Adventure Series is sponsored by StoneRidge. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Online Birders Book Club with DPNC
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our new birding book club starting on February 22\, from 6-7 pm on Zoom. Our first book will be Kingbird Highway: The Biggest Year in the Life of an Extreme Birder by Kenn Kaufman. \nAt sixteen\, Kenn Kaufman dropped out of the high school where he was student council president and hit the road\, hitching back and forth across America\, from Alaska to Florida\, Maine to Mexico. Maybe not all that unusual a thing to do in the seventies\, but what Kenn was searching for was a little different: not sex\, drugs\, God or even self\, but birds. A report of a rare bird would send him hitching nonstop from Pacific to Atlantic and back again. When he was broke he would pick fruit or do odd jobs to earn the fifty dollars or so that would last him for weeks. His goal was to set a record – most North American species seen in a year – but along the way he began to realize that at this breakneck pace he was only looking\, not seeing. What had been a game became a quest for a deeper understanding of the natural world. Kingbird Highway is a unique coming-of-age story\, combining a lyrical celebration of nature with wild\, and sometimes dangerous\, adventures\, starring a colorful cast of characters. \nPlease register to receive the Zoom link for Birding Book Club.
