SUMMARY:Color is Magic\, Value is Vital
DESCRIPTION:October 22 – November 19 \nLearn to develop the unique atmosphere and spirit of a scene through effective use of color and value. Explore how colorists use color contrast and color balance to create daring and vivid works of art. Create landscapes that are tonal and moody or vibrant with sunlit areas and shadows with dimension and color. \nIn this class\, students will learn to use the color wheel as a completely different tool\, gain an understanding of the use of analogous and complementary colors\, and see color as value. Students will learn to design a custom color wheel to help create signature colors to reflect their own unique vision of the landscape. Painting with these signature colors will allow students to use color more effectively to achieve a sense of light and atmosphere in the artwork. \nAny medium may be used\, there will be instructor demos in oil and watercolor. Students can work from demo images or bring their own photo references. Taught by Howard Park and Lisa Miceli. \nFive-week series\nTuesdays\, 9am – 12pm\nMembers $240 / Non-Members $280\nTo register\, call 860.536.7601\, x211.

SUMMARY:Writers Group
DESCRIPTION:We welcome local writers for free-write sessions at 4 p.m.\, Mondays\, in the Ames Room. The sessions are open to anyone who feels like writing. \nLoosely based on the notion of stream-of-consciousness writing described by Natalie Goldberg in “Writing Down the Bones\,” the sessions are broken into three parts of 5 minutes\, 10 minutes\, and 5 minutes. A writer selects a topic from subjects previously placed in a box. For the first 5 minutes\, write whatever comes to mind. Don’t stop to correct\, just record whatever pops into your head\, even if it’s something like\, “I have no idea what to write…” Each person shares what they’ve written\, free of commentary or criticism. \nThen\, for 10 minutes\, writers write what comes to mind\, perhaps an idea or a subject someone had just read aloud or something you wrote in the first 5 minutes will lead to a focus. The group shares again. Writers write for another 5 minutes and then share. \nYou’ll be surprised at the places you’ll go with the topics in these sessions. They give you an opportunity to express yourself\, they’re therapeutic\, and they often lead to a lot to talk about after putting your pens down.

SUMMARY:Homeschool Program: Discovering Color in Watercolors - Ages 5-12
DESCRIPTION:October 7– December 2 (No Class on October 14 and November 11) \nThe Mystic Museum of Art (MMoA) offers specially designed homeschool classes for children ages 5 – 12. Taught by MMoA artist educators\, these programs are a combination of discussion and hands-on art making in our galleries and KTJ studios. All programs focus on a variety of art techniques\, elements of art and design\, art vocabulary\, and critical thinking skills. Homeschool programs are usually eight-week sessions that run for 2.5 hours on Monday afternoons from 1:30pm to 4pm. The MMoA homeschool program offers a variety of courses throughout the year. \nDiscovering Color in Watercolors \nDive deep into the wonderful world of color and experience the magic of watercolor painting. We will compare and experiment with colors to understand their unique properties and how they interact with each other. Through hands-on activities\, we will also learn essential watercolor techniques. \nEach student will receive their own watercolor travel set and a set of three watercolor brushes to kickstart their artistic journey. Taught by Ben Ellcome. \nMondays 1:30pm – 4pm\nMembers $225 / Non-Members $260\nAll supplies included with registration.\nAdvanced registration required: register online or call 860.536.7601 x211.

SUMMARY:Holiday Open House at the Mystic & Noank Library
DESCRIPTION:Walk (or drive!) up the hill to the library for our second annual Holiday Open House. You will be greeted by Santa’s sleigh and eight tiny reindeer on the Library Lawn. Come inside to get warm and have a homemade cookie and a glass of cider as you enter the library. Carolers from Stonington High School will be singing. A string quartet from Fitch High School will be playing\, and the Mystic Ukulele Strummers will be strumming. The children’s room will be brimming with holiday crafts and grab ‘n go bags. Feast your eyes on the beautiful tree decorations made with love and talent by the Mystic Calligraphers. The Calligraphers are also offering a craft for us all to learn how to make names tags calligrapher-style. Then come upstairs to the Spicer Reading room to marvel at Captain Spicer’s 1893 design and to see 2024 Santa (and Mrs. Claus).

SUMMARY:Chess Club for Kids!
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Mystic Noank Library’s Chess Club! The club welcomes children grades 3 and up! We will be meeting on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. \nChildren should know how the chess pieces move before their first visit. We teach chess strategy\, chess sportsmanship\, and organize games. \nSportsman-like conduct is always a goal. Members must be respectful of each other’s play\, and at the end of each game\, win or lose\, members must be cordial with one another. \nInstructor: \nMichael Grater\, library associate and chess enthusiast\, leads our Chess Club. He grew up playing chess and continues to play for fun. Chess is a great game that builds concentration\, patience\, planning\, sportsmanship\, and problem-solving skills in children\, teens and adults.
