SUMMARY:Terence Hawkins (Rage of Achilles) Author Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a weekend book signing with Terence Hawkins for the release of the new book Rage of Achilles. \nAbout the Book\nIn his first book\, The Rage of Achilles\, Terence Hawkins imagines an Iliad that really happened. Informed by the brutal realities of Bronze Age warfare and Julian Jaynes’ theory of the bicameral mind–now a basis for HBO’s Westworld–the novel depicts real men and women struggling in the end of a decade-long war\, their gods dwindling into hallucinations and half-heard commands as the modern consciousness is suddenly and painfully born. Emily Hauser\, author of For the Most Beautiful\, said: “Terence Hawkins’ ‘The Rage of Achilles’ . . . is Greek myth red in tooth and claw. Visceral and to-the-point\, it grabs you and doesn’t let go.” Tom Perrotta\, author of Little Children and The Leftovers\, called it “a rare thing–a genuinely fresh take on a classic text.” \nAbout Terence Hawkins\nTerence Hawkins grew up in a small town in southwestern Pennsylvania. His home county\, which the state police call Fayette Nam\, is the setting for Philipp Meyer’s American Rust and the original Night of the Living Dead. His grandfathers and several uncles were coal miners. He graduated from Yale\, where he was publisher of the Yale Daily News. He attended the University of Wisconsin Law School and returned to New Haven in 1985 to practice as a trial lawyer. \nIn 2011\, Hawkins became the founding Director of the Yale Writers’ Conference\, which he ran until 2015. In 2014\, he started the Company of Writers\, which offers workshops and manuscript services to writers at all levels of experience. \nThe Rage of Achilles is Hawkins’ first novel.

SUMMARY:Read of The Day with Mark Rubinstein (The Storytellers) with Bank Square Books and The Day
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a Read of The Day author talk and Q&A with Mark Rubinstein for the release of the new book The Storytellers. Rubinstein will be in conversation with Rick Koster\, arts & culture writer for The Day. Read of The Day is an event partnership series brought to you by Bank Square Books and The Day. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nHave you ever read a suspense novel so good you had to stop and think to yourself\, “How did the author come up with this idea? Their characters? Is some of this story real?” For over five years\, Mark Rubinstein\, physician\, psychiatrist\, and mystery and thriller writer\, had the chance to ask the most well-known authors in the field just these kinds of questions in interviews for the Huffington Post. \nCollected here are interviews with forty-seven accomplished authors\, including Michael Connelly\, Ken Follett\, Meg Gardiner\, Dennis Lehane\, Laura Lippman\, and Don Winslow. These are their personal stories in their own words\, much of the material never before published. How do these writers’ life experiences color their art? Find out their thoughts\, their inspirations\, their candid opinions. Learn more about your favorite authors\, how they work and who they truly are. \nAbout Mark Rubinstein\nMark Rubinstein’s high-octane thrillers Mad Dog House (2012) and its sequel\, Mad Dog Justice (2014)\, were both finalists for the Foreword Book of the Year Award. His novella The Foot Soldier won the silver award in the 2014 Benjamin Franklin Awards competition in the Popular Fiction category. His novella Return to Sandara (2014)\, won the gold IPPY Award for Suspense/Fiction. The Lovers’ Tango won the gold medal in Popular Fiction at the 2016 Benjamin Franklin Awards. He now writes fiction and nonfiction\, has been a contributor to the Huffington Post\, was a contributor to Psychology Today\, contributes columns to Literary Hub’s Crime Reads\, and is a book reviewer for the New York Journal of Books. SUMMARY:Sanctity and the Sonnet
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Beauty of Holiness in Poetry through Stained Glass \nIn this class we will learn how to build a sonnet based on an exploration of the stained glass windows in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption on Enders Island. \n“Poetry surrounds us everywhere.” \nHave you been stopped in your tracks in a cathedral\, as light reflected through stained glass surrounds you\, or listened to the words of a sonnet that move you deeply? Art touches us in a profound and spiritual way. \nIn this one day workshop join Dr. Varholy for a lively discussion on the sonnets of Shakespeare\, St. Robert Southwell and Michelangelo. Then spend time with author Len Mattano as he shares his own photos and the stories and meaning behind stained glass windows. \nEveryone will have the opportunity to write and share a sonnet of their own\, inspired by the stained glass windows and quiet atmosphere of the chapel. SUMMARY:Get Serious With Compost Online Class
DESCRIPTION:Join Farmer Craig to learn the benefits of composting in this online class offered via Zoom. From reducing your waste to helping your garden and plants grow\, to combating climate change\, composting is important and doesn’t have to be complicated. We will cover the importance of soil tests and how to conduct one. A soil test lets you know which minerals\, trace elements\, anions and exchangeable cations are present in your existing soil. The results of your test will tell us which amendments you must add to get the soil ready for the optimum growth of your crops. This program is suited for adults. Pre-registration is required.\nMembers: $17\, Nonmembers: $20

SUMMARY:James Benn (Road of Bones) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with James Benn for the release of the new book Road of Bones. Benn will be in conversation with Rick Koster\, arts & culture writer for The Day. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nBilly Boyle is sent to the heart of the USSR to solve a double-murder at a critical turning point in the war in this latest installment of critically acclaimed James R. Benn’s WWII mystery series. \nIt’s September 1944\, and the US is poised to launch Operation Frantic\, a shuttle-bombing mission to be conducted by American aircraft based in Great Britain\, southern Italy\, and three Soviet airfields in the Ukraine. Tensions are already high between the American and Russian allies when two intelligence agents–one Soviet\, one American–are found dead at Poltava\, one of the Ukrainian bases. Billy is brought in to investigate\, and this time he’s paired\, at the insistence of the Soviets\, with a KGB agent who has his own political and personal agenda. \nIn the course of an investigation that quickly spirals out of control\, Billy is aided by the Night Witches\, a daring regiment of young Soviet women flying at night at very low altitudes\, bombing hundreds of German installations. \nIt’s a turning point in the war\, and allied efforts hang by a thread. Unless Billy and his KGB partner can solve the murders in an atmosphere of mutual distrust\, Operation Frantic is doomed. \nAbout James Benn\nJames R. Benn is the author of the Billy Boyle World War II mysteries. The debut\, Billy Boyle\, was selected as a Top Five book of the year by Book Sense and was a Dilys Award nominee\, A Blind Goddess was longlisted for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award\, The Rest Is Silence was a Barry Award nominee\, and The Devouring was a Macavity Award nominee. Benn\, a former librarian\, splits his time between the Gulf Coast of Florida and Connecticut with his wife\, Deborah Mandel.
