SUMMARY:Sea Music Festival at Mystic Seaport
DESCRIPTION:Musicians from around the world will come to Mystic Seaport to celebrate the musical traditions of the Golden Age of Sail at the 38th annual Sea Music Festival\, Thursday through Sunday\, June 8-11. The Festival is the premier sea music event in North America. \nThis year’s roster includes musicians from Great Britain\, France\, and Australia\, along with singers from across the United States. The weekend’s festivities include daytime and evening concerts\, special performances for children\, instructional workshops\, a scholars’ symposium\, and a unique opportunity to witness sea music at work aboard the Museum’s historic vessels. \nMore than 15 individuals and groups will be featured at the Festival representing the gamut of traditional and contemporary sea music. The French group Nordet will perform their blend of a cappella working songs with masterful modern compositions. The Sydney-based group Roaring Forties is renowned for the powerful impact they make singing unaccompanied folk songs. Rhode Island’s Vox Hunters will present an exciting repertoire of driving dance tunes blended with an unorthodox collection of interesting songs. \nVisitors may also take in performances from The Chanteens\, Larry Kaplan\, Jerry Bryant\, Atwater/Donnelly\, Sparky and Rhonda Rucker\, Dick Swain\, Tom Lewis\, The Johnson Girls\, and the Mystic Seaport Chantey Staff\, including Geoff Kaufman\, Craig Edwards\, Denise Kegler\, and Don Sineti. \nNew to the lineup this year is Anayis “AJ” Wright\, a traditional folk musician who came to sea music through the Chantey Skills class at the Williams-Mystic undergraduate program at the Museum. She performs as a solo vocalist\, and plays cello and concertina. \nAll workshops and daytime concerts in the Festival are included in regular Mystic Seaport admission. Special tickets are required for evening concerts and can be purchased online\, in person at the Museum’s entrances\, or by calling 860.572.0711. Weekend passes are also available. College students will be admitted into the Festival for the youth rate upon presentation of a current student ID. \nAs part of the Festival\, Mystic Seaport will also host the annual Music of the Sea Symposium Friday and Saturday\, June 9-10. The Symposium\, co-sponsored by Mystic Seaport\, Williams College\, the Williams-Mystic Program\, and the University of Connecticut at Avery Point\, features presentations of themed papers by some of the country’s leading maritime music scholars and explores subjects from history and folklore\, to literature and ethnomusicology\, along with many other related topics. Music will be provided by Max Ebb to keep all entertained while browsing. \nThe Silent Auction\, which features donations from generous local merchants and Friends\, will close at 2 p.m. \nThe Library Fair has been held for over 35 years and is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Friends. Monies raised are used by the Friends throughout the year to support our wonderful Library. This event is free and open to all. DESCRIPTION:6pm: Fun Run \n6:30pm: Ribbon cutting and dedication Ribbon cutting and of “Mystic Runners Park” \nKelley’s Pace\, Olde Mistick Village\, and the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce will have a ribbon cutting and dedication of Mystic Runners Park. \nJeff Anderson\, the owner of Kelley’s Pace had the idea of creating a spot for runners to gather before or after runs\, and a place to cool off after a hot summer run.  He also wanted a way to honor John and Jessie Kelley who created Kelley’s Pace the running store more than 37 years ago. \nWith the help of Joyce Resnikoff\,  Olde Mistick Village\, and Kelley’s Pace a small park was created near the entrance of Kelley’s Pace.  Three granite benches are available for people to relax\, and an outdoor shower was installed for runners to rinse off after a run. \n“The dedication plaque was donated by the Kelley Memorial Fund\, which awards scholarships to Fitch High school runners that exhibit kindness.  John Kelley was a teacher and coach at Fitch High School.” \nOn June 1st\, a dedication plaque will be installed dedicating the park to John and Jessie Kelley.  It is fitting to create this in 2017\, which marks the 60th anniversary of John Kelley winning the Boston Marathon. \nThe festivities will begin at 6pm with a fun run\, followed by a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony at approximately 6:30.   Refreshments will be served following the dedication. \nThe public is invited to this special occasion to honor John and Jessie Kelley and to celebrate running in Mystic.
