SUMMARY:Crystal Maldonado (No Filter and Other Lies) In Conversation with e.E. Charlton-Trujillo Virtual Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present a virtual author talk and Q&A with Crystal Maldonado for the new book\, No Filter and Other Lies. Crystal will be in conversation with author\, e.E. Charlton-Trujillo. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nYou should know\, right now\, that I’m a liar. \nThey’re usually little lies. Tiny lies. Baby lies. Not so much lies as lie adjacent. \nBut they’re still lies. \nTwenty one-year-old Max Monroe has it all: beauty\, friends\, and a glittering life filled with adventure. With tons of followers on Instagram\, her picture-perfect existence seems eminently enviable. \nExcept it’s all fake. \nMax is actually 17-year-old Kat Sanchez\, a quiet and sarcastic teenager living in drab Bakersfield\, California. Nothing glamorous in her existence—just sprawl\, bad house parties\, a crap school year\, and the awkwardness of dealing with her best friend Hari’s unrequited love. \nBut while Kat’s life is far from perfect\, she thrives as Max: doling out advice\, sharing beautiful photos\, networking with famous influencers\, even making a real friend in a follower named Elena. The closer Elena and “Max” get—texting\, Snapping\, and even calling—the more Kat feels she has to keep up the façade. \nBut when one of Max’s posts goes ultra-viral and gets back to the very person she’s been stealing photos from\, her entire world – real and fake — comes crashing down around her. She has to figure out a way to get herself out of the huge web of lies she’s created without hurting the people she loves. \nBut it might already be too late. \nAbout Crystal Maldonado\nCrystal Maldonado is a young adult author with a lot of feelings. Her debut novel\, Fat Chance\, Charlie Vega\, is a 2021 New England Book Award winner\, a Cosmopolitan Best New Book\, and a POPSUGAR Best New YA Novel. Her next novel\, No Filter and Other Lies\, explores teenage life in the social media age—and the lies we tell to ourselves and others. By day\, Crystal works in higher ed marketing\, and by night\, a writer who loves Beyoncé\, shopping\, spending too much time on her phone\, and being extra. Her work has also been published in Latina\, BuzzFeed\, and the Hartford Courant. She lives in western Massachusetts with her husband\, daughter\, and dog. \nAbout e.E. Charlton-Trujillo\nMexican American author\, filmmaker and youth literary activist e.E. Charlton-Trujillo has written several award-winning books for teens and children\, most notably the ALA Stonewall Award Winning Fat Angie series. Their debut picture book\, co-authored with NYT Bestseller Pat Zietlow Miller and illustrated by Joe Cepeda\, “Lupe Lopez: Rock Star Rules” releases Spring of 2022. Charlton-Trujillo is the co-founder of the nonprofit Never Counted Out\, a member of the Las Musas collective and co-host of the Instagram Live series Off the Cuff. https://www.eecharlton-trujillo.com/

SUMMARY:Brian Power (A Chance to Serve) Author Signing at Savoy Bookshop & Café
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author signing with Brian Power for the book\, A Chance to Serve. Books will be available for purchase during the signing. \nAbout the Book\nLt. Col. Power vividly recalls a wide range of experiences from Boot Camp at Parris Island\, SC; to infantry training at Camp LeJeune\, NC; to Officer training at Quantico\, VA. He gives us the pros and the cons from his tour as a young lieutenant in Japan\, to his Reserve experiences as a junior infantry officer\, to his recall to Active Duty to attend the prestigious Naval War College in Newport\, RI\, to his final tour at the Pentagon where he again had been recalled to Active Duty for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. His reminiscences over more than a quarter-century of both Active and Reserve service in the Marine Corps reflect and magnify the core values (Honor\, Courage\, Commitment) that the Marines are taught (and you will be exposed to a few who do not always practice them). As Lt.Col. Power grew in his career he met remarkable people\, was supported with outstanding loyalty from his troops\, took part in significant events\, and had his heart filled with acomplishment and broken by duplicity. But his love for the Corps remained intact.Power weaves an engrossing tale of intriguing characters coupled with military events and highlighted by his sometimes joyous and hilarious experiences. It’s a good read.Lt. Col. Power retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 1993. He began his writing career after retiring from a consulting and training business he started. You can find out more about his first book\, Song of Atlantis at songofatlantis.com. Mr. Power and his wife live in Rhode Island. \nAbout the Author\nLt. Col. SUMMARY:Leah Angstman (Out Front the Following Sea) Author Talk and Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents Leah Angstman discussing the book Out Front the Following Sea. This event will be moderated by Nancy Burns-Fusaro from the Westerly Sun. \nAbout the Book\nOut Front the Following Sea is a historical epic of one woman’s survival in a time when the wilderness is still wild\, heresy is publicly punishable\, and being independent is worse than scorned—it is a death sentence. At the onset of King William’s War between French and English settlers in 1689 New England\, Ruth Miner is accused of witchcraft for the murder of her parents and must flee the brutality of her town. She stows away on the ship of the only other person who knows her innocence: an audacious sailor—Owen—bound to her by years of attraction\, friendship\, and shared secrets. But when Owen’s French ancestry finds him at odds with a violent English commander\, the turmoil becomes life-or-death for the sailor\, the headstrong Ruth\, and the cast of Quakers\, Pequot Indians\, soldiers\, highwaymen\, and townsfolk dragged into the fray. Now Ruth must choose between sending Owen to the gallows or keeping her own neck from the noose. \nAbout the Author\nLeah Angstman is a historian and transplanted Michigander. Her writing has been a finalist for the Saluda River Prize\, Cowles Book Prize\, Able Muse Book Award\, Bevel Summers Fiction Prize\, and Chaucer Book Award\, and has appeared in Publishers Weekly\, L.A. Review of Books\, Electric Literature\, Nashville Review\, Slice\, and elsewhere. She serves as editor-in-chief for Alternating Current and vice chair for a Colorado historical commission.

His books include Life on Air: a History of Radio Four\, which won the 2008 History Today-Longman Book of the Year Award and was nominated for the Orwell Prize.

SUMMARY:Andy Shauf in Concert (opening performance by Cassandra Jenkins)
DESCRIPTION:Andy Shauf in concert\nOpening performance by Cassandra Jenkins\nPresented by Westerly Sound at The United in Westerly\, RI\nSATURDAY\, APRIL 2ND | 8- 11 PM\n$25 ; TICKETS AVAILABLE AT UNITEDTHEATRE.ORG \nFew artists are storytellers as deft and disarmingly observational as Andy Shauf. The Toronto-based\, Saskatchewan-raised musician’s songs unfold like short fiction: they’re densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. On his new album The Neon Skyline\, he sets a familiar scene of inviting a friend for beers on the opening title track: “I said\, ‘Come to the Skyline\, I’ll be washing my sins away.’ He just laughed\, said ‘I’ll be late\, you know how I can be.'”

SUMMARY:Sharon Dukett (No Rules: A Memoir) Author Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a weekend book signing with Sharon Dukett for the release of the new book No Rules: A Memoir.\nAbout the Book\nIn this coming-of-age memoir\, Sharon takes you with her on a nail-biting adventure through the early 1970s after leaving her sheltered home life at sixteen years old to join the hippies. Yearning for freedom\, she lands in an adult world for which she is unprepared\, and must learn quickly in order to survive. \nAs Sharon navigates the US and Canada—whether by hitchhiking\, bicycle\, or the back of a motorcycle—she experiences love and heartbreak\, discovers who she can and cannot trust\, and awakens to the Women’s Liberation movement while living in a rural off-grid commune. In this colorful memoir\, she reflects upon the changes that reshaped her during that decade\, and how the ways in which she and her peers threw off the rules meant to keep women in their place has transformed and empowered the lives of girls and women today. \nAbout the Author\nSharon Dukett has been a computer programmer\, deputy director in state government\, cocktail waitress\, and project manager (PMP certified)\, and she has designed and embroidered handmade clothing. She travels extensively using loyalty points and avoiding tourist traps. When she is home\, she and her husband live in central Connecticut in a house he built that overlooks the Connecticut River―the house they raised their family in. When not writing or blogging\, she is reading\, skiing\, biking\, golfing\, spending time with family and friends\, creating clutter\, and committing to more activities than she probably should. She loves reading memoir from a variety of backgrounds―to learn how others feel\, experience life\, and deal with their struggles. No Rules is her debut memoir.
