SUMMARY:Gunilla Norris (Calling the Creatures: Poems) Author Talk and Q&A at Savoy Bookshop & Café
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Gunilla Norris for the new poetry collection\, Calling the Creatures! \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nGunilla Norris has written a book that spans decades of her life. She invites us to wonder what calls us into recollection. It is always a mystery when an inner voice asks for attention. In a long life\, that call can be insistent and want a welcome for a vast array of experiences. Gunilla likens this to the calling of farm animals back to the barn after foraging all day which she witnessed in northern Sweden as a child. \nMeaningful experiences\, be they losses\, loves\, queries or epiphanies\, want sanctuary. If the doors of the heart are open\, the recollections can enter again\, come back home so to speak and be recognized as the poems of a life. \nAbout Gunilla Norris\nGunilla Norris’ parents were world travelers in the Swedish diplomatic corps and so she grew up essentially in three places: Argentina\, Sweden and the United States. As a child she was given a rich exposure to different languages and cultures. \nShe received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and her M.S. from Bridgeport University in the field of human development. She is a mother and a grandmother. She has been a psychotherapist in private practice for more than fourty-five years and has felt privileged to accompany many people on their journeys to growth and healing. Her special love has been teaching meditation and leading contemplative workshops of many kinds. \nAs a writer Gunilla has published eleven children’s books\, three books of poetry and then books on spirituality including: Being Home\, Becoming Bread\, Inviting Silence\, A Mystic Garden\, Simple Ways and Sheltered in the Heart.

SUMMARY:Spencer Quinn (It's a Wonderful Woof) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Spencer Quinn for the latest book in the Chet & Bernie Mystery Series\, It’s a Wonderful Woof. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nSpencer Quinn’s It’s a Wonderful Woof presents a holiday adventure for Chet the dog\, “the most lovable narrator in crime fiction” (Boston Globe)\, and his human partner\, PI Bernie Little. \nHoliday time in the Valley\, and in the holiday spirit—despite the dismal shape of the finances at the Little Detective Agency—Bernie refers a potential client to Victor Klovsky\, a fellow private eye. It’s also true that the case—promising lots of online research but little action—doesn’t appeal to Bernie\, while it seems perfect for Victor\, who is not cut out for rough stuff. But Victor disappears in a rough-stuff way\, and when he doesn’t show up at his mom’s to light the Hanukkah candles\, she hires Chet and Bernie to find him. \nThey soon discover that Victor’s client has also vanished. The trail leads to the ruins of a mission called Nuestra Señora de los Saguaros\, dating back to the earliest Spanish explorers. Some very dangerous people are interested in the old mission. Does some dusty archive hold the secret of a previously unknown art treasure\, possibly buried for centuries? What does the Flight into Egypt—when Mary\, Joseph and the baby Jesus fled Herod—have to do with saguaros\, the Sonoran desert cactus? \nNo one is better than Chet at nosing out buried secrets\, but before he can\, he and Bernie are forced to take flight themselves\, chased through a Christmas Eve blizzard by a murderous foe who loves art all too much. \nAbout Spencer Quinn\nSpencer Quinn is the pen name for Peter Abrahams\, the Edgar-winning\, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Chet and Bernie mystery series\, as well as the #1 New York Times bestselling Bowser and Birdie series for middle-grade readers. He lives on Cape Cod with his wife Diana and dog Pearl.

SUMMARY:Digital Program: On the Margins of a Movement: The Accidental Feminist
DESCRIPTION:One hundred years after the ratification of the 19th Amendment comes a reflective historical fiction novel with a compelling contemporary voice. \nDiscussions of the women’s suffrage movement largely center around the wealthy\, charismatic leaders. Theirs are the names we’re taught in school\, the ones we see in textbooks and documentaries. Yet\, when so few names are immortalized\, one must wonder who marched alongside these women but have since been forgotten. In The Accidental Suffragist\, Galia Gichon explores this pivotal time in history through the eyes of a struggling factory worker. Examining the impact of economic class revealed a hidden voice — a woman with different motivations for joining the fight\, someone with an awful lot on the line. \nGichon’s The Accidental Suffragist tells the story of Helen Fox\, a garment worker living in New York’s tenements. After surviving the historic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire\, Helen becomes consumed by the suffrage movement\, propelled by the ways it could radically reshape her life. When her newfound activism puts her at odds with her husband and neighbors\, she has to decide whether to put family first\, or to risk everything in hopes of a better life. \n“Gichon reminds us of the grave sacrifices so many women made more than a century ago and the debt of gratitude we owe them today” -Alisyn Camerota\, CNN Anchor \nRegistration is required to attend this program. You will receive a Zoom invitation the morning of the program.

SUMMARY:Beatriz Williams (The Wicked Widow) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with bestselling author Beatriz Williams to discuss her latest book in the Wicked City series\, The Wicked Widow. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nGin Kelly\, the wicked redhead\, is back! Readers will delight in next installment of the Wicked City series by New York Times bestselling author Beatriz Williams. \nJune 1925. Audacious Appalachian flapper Geneva “Gin” Kelly prepares to trade her high-flying ways for respectable marriage to Oliver Anson Marshall\, a steadfast Prohibition agent who happens to hail from one of New York’s most distinguished families. But just as wedding bells chime\, the head of the notorious East Coast rum-running racket—and Anson’s mortal enemy—turns up murdered at a society funeral\, and their short-lived honeymoon bliss goes up in a spectacular blaze that sends Anson back undercover…and into the jaws of a trap from which not even Gin can rescue him. As violence explodes around her\, Gin must summon all her considerable moxie to trace the tentacles of this sinister organization back to their shocking source\, and face down a legendary American family at a rigged game it has no intention of losing. \nJune 1998. When Ella Dommerich’s ninetysomething society queen aunt Julie ropes her into digging up dirt on Senator (and Presidential candidate) Franklin Hardcastle in order to settle old family scores\, she couldn’t be less enthusiastic. Pregnant Ella’s recently ditched her unfaithful husband and settled into cozy—if complicated—domesticity with her almost-too-good-to-be-true musician boyfriend\, Hector. But then the Hardcastle secrets lead to a web of shady dealings Ella’s uncovered in her job as a financial analyst\, and the bodies start to tumble out of the venerable woodwork. With the help of her ex-husband and her mysterious connection to a certain redheaded flapper\, Ella digs up more than mere dirt…only to discover herself standing alone between a legendarily ruthless family and the prize it’s sought for generations. \nWhat ugly secrets lurk in the opulent enclaves—and bank accounts–of America’s richest families? And can two determined women from two different generations thwart the murderous legacy of the demon liquor? \nAbout the Author\nBeatriz Williams is the bestselling author of thirteen novels\, including Her Last Flight\, The Summer Wives\, and The Golden Hour\, as well as All the Ways We Said Goodbye\, cowritten with Lauren Willig and Karen White. A native of Seattle\, she graduated from Stanford University and earned an MBA in finance from Columbia University. She lives with her husband and four children near the Connecticut shore\, where she divides her time between writing and laundry.

SUMMARY:Ross Douthat (The Deep Places) Virtual Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with New York Times columnist Ross Douthat for his memoir\, The Deep Places. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nAbout the Book\nIn this vulnerable\, insightful memoir\, the New York Times columnist tells the story of his five-year struggle with a disease that officially doesn’t exist\, exploring the limits of modern medicine\, the stories that we unexpectedly fall into\, and the secrets that only suffering reveals. \n“A powerful memoir about our fragile hopes in the face of chronic illness.”—Kate Bowler\, bestselling author of Everything Happens for a Reason \nIn the summer of 2015\, Ross Douthat was moving his family\, with two young daughters and a pregnant wife\, from Washington\, D.C.\, to a sprawling farmhouse in a picturesque Connecticut town when he acquired a mysterious and devastating sickness. It left him sleepless\, crippled\, wracked with pain–a shell of himself. After months of seeing doctors and descending deeper into a physical inferno\, he discovered that he had a disease which according to CDC definitions does not actually exist: the chronic form of Lyme disease\, a hotly contested condition that devastates the lives of tens of thousands of people but has no official recognition–and no medically approved cure. \nFrom a rural dream house that now felt like a prison\, Douthat’s search for help takes him off the map of official medicine\, into territory where cranks and conspiracies abound and patients are forced to take control of their own treatment and experiment on themselves. Slowly\, against his instincts and assumptions\, he realizes that many of the cranks and weirdos are right\, that many supposed “hypochondriacs” are victims of an indifferent medical establishment\, and that all kinds of unexpected experiences and revelations lurk beneath the surface of normal existence\, in the places underneath. \nThe Deep Places is a story about what happens when you are terribly sick and realize that even the doctors who are willing to treat you can only do so much. Along the way\, Douthat describes his struggle back toward health with wit and candor\, portraying sickness as the most terrible of gifts. It teaches you to appreciate the grace of ordinary life by taking that life away from you. It reveals the deep strangeness of the world\, the possibility that the reasonable people might be wrong\, and the necessity of figuring out things for yourself. And it proves\, day by dreadful day\, that you are stronger than you ever imagined\, and that even in the depths there is always hope. \nAbout the Author\nRoss Douthat has been an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times since 2009. Previously\, he was a senior editor at The Atlantic. He is the author of The Decadent Society\, To Change the Church\, Bad Religion\, and Privilege\, and a co-author\, with Reihan Salam\, of Grand New Party. He is the film critic for National Review. He lives with his wife and four children in New Haven\, Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Gunilla Norris (Calling the Creatures: Poems) Author Talk and Q&A at Savoy
She has been a psychotherapist in private practice for more than thirty years and has felt privileged to accompany many people on their journeys to growth and healing. Her special love has been teaching meditation and leading contemplative workshops of many kinds. \nAs a writer Gunilla has published eleven children’s books\, one book of poetry and six books on spirituality including: Being Home\, Becoming Bread\, Inviting Silence\, A Mystic Garden\, Simple Ways and Sheltered in the Heart.
