April 7th at The United–tickets on sale now LINK IN BIO. Singers and guitarists Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan of The Milk Carton Kids “have been known to argue about everything from wardrobe to geography to grammar. SUMMARY:The True Depths of the Plastic Crisis: Thicker Than Water
DESCRIPTION:Plastic is everywhere–it’s in our food containers\, keyboards\, glasses\, even our toothbrushes. It’s lightweight\, versatile\, and so cheap that we often forget how much it permeates our lives. But our relationship with plastic is not a healthy one\, and our worldwide reliance on it is affecting our planet and our bodies. \nAuthor Erica Cirino has traveled across land and sea to reveal the true depths of the plastic crisis\, which she details in her recent book\, Thicker Than Water: The Quest for Solutions to the Plastic Crisis (published by Island Press\, in October 2021). In Thicker Than Water\, Erica documents plastic across ecosystems and elements; shares stories from the primarily Black\, brown\, Indigenous and rural communities that are disproportionally harmed by industrial pollution globally; and uncovers strategies that work to prevent plastic from causing further devastation to our planet and its inhabitants. \nErica also works as a science writer and artist exploring the intersection of the human and nonhuman worlds. Her widely published photojournalistic works depict the numerous ways people connect to nature—wild creatures in particular—and shape planet Earth. She lives with her rescued street dog\, Sabi\, on and between two shores\, Long Island and Connecticut. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. Space is limited. Masks must be worn at all times. Please notify the Library if you register and are unable to attend.

SUMMARY:Stewart O'Nan (Ocean State) Author Talk and Q&A at Savoy Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Stewart O’Nan for the new book\, Ocean State. This event is in partnership with Ashaway Free Library. This author talk is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Book\nSet in a working-class town on the Rhode Island coast\, O’Nan’s latest is a crushing\, beautifully written\, and profoundly compelling novel about sisters\, mothers\, and daughters\, and the terrible things love makes us do. \nIn the first line of Ocean State\, we learn that a high school student was murdered\, and we find out who did it. The story that unfolds from there with incredible momentum is thus one of the build-up to and fall-out from the murder\, told through the alternating perspectives of the four women at its heart. Angel\, the murderer\, Carol\, her mother\, and Birdy\, the victim\, all come alive on the page as they converge in a climax both tragic and inevitable. Watching over it all is the retrospective testimony of Angel’s younger sister Marie\, who reflects on that doomed autumn of 2009 with all the wisdom of hindsight. \nAngel and Birdy love the same teenage boy\, frantically and single-mindedly\, and are compelled by the intensity of their feelings to extremes neither could have anticipated. O’Nan’s expert hand paints a fully realized portrait of these women\, but also weaves a compelling and heartbreaking story of working-class life in Ashaway\, Rhode Island. Propulsive\, moving\, and deeply rendered\, Ocean State is a masterful novel by one of our greatest storytellers. \nAbout Stewart O’Nan\nStewart O’Nan is the author of numerous books\, including Wish You Were Here\, Everyday People\, In the Walled City\, The Speed Queen\, and Emily\, Alone. His 2007 novel\, Last Night at the Lobster\, was a national bestseller and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. He was born and raised in Pittsburgh\, where he lives with his family.

SUMMARY:Digital Program: Haiku: Capturing Moments in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join poet Jennifer Y. Montgomery on a journey through the history of haiku and other forms of Japanese micro poetry. From frogs to Zen meditation to clandestine feudal love letters. She’ll then guide us through the basics of writing haiku. It’s much more than just counting lines and syllables; each haiku presents a season and a single moment in nature. Think about your favorite season and come prepared to write your own haiku. \nSpeaker Bio\nJennifer Y. Montgomery is a writer\, artist\, storyteller\, attorney\, and pie baker who lives in Connecticut with her daughter. She grew up in rural North Dakota but believes she has no discernible accent. She has also lived in California\, Minnesota\, Scotland\, Israel\, and Connecticut. All of these places have influenced her life and writing. Her poems have appeared in Poetry Quarterly\, Enclave\, Jitter\, Haiku Journal\, 50 Haiku\, Failed Haiku\, Red Weather\, and elsewhere. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in Hinterland. She has told many stories on stage and has been featured on the Mouth storytelling podcast. SUMMARY:Brianna Madia (Nowhere for Very Long) Virtual Author Talk and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Brianna Madia for the new book\, Nowhere for Very Long. We will be donating 15% of book sales to Stand Up For Animals in Westerly RI! \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Please register on our website. \nAbout the Book\nIn this beautifully written\, vividly detailed memoir\, a young woman chronicles her adventures traveling across the deserts of the American West in an orange van named Bertha and reflects on an unconventional approach to life \nA woman defined by motion\, Brianna Madia bought a beat-up bright orange van\, filled it with her two dogs Bucket and Dagwood\, and headed into the canyons of Utah with her husband. Nowhere for Very Long is her deeply felt\, immaculately told story of exploration—of the world outside and the spirit within. \nHowever\, pursuing a life of intention isn’t always what it seems. In fact\, at times it was downright boring\, exhausting\, and even desperate—when Bertha overheated and she was forced to pull over on a lonely stretch of South Dakota highway; when the weather was bitterly cold and her water jugs froze beneath her as she slept in the parking lot of her office; when she worried about money\, her marriage\, and the looming question mark of her future. But Brianna was committed to living a life true to herself\, come what may\, and that made all the difference. \nNowhere for Very Long is the true story of a woman learning and unlearning\, from backroads to breakdowns\, from married to solo\, and finally\, from lost to found to lost again . . . this time\, on purpose. \nAbout Brianna Madia\nBRIANNA MADIA has lived a life of relentless intention\, traveling the deserts of the American Southwest in an old Ford van. She made a name for herself on social media with her inspiring captions cum- essays about bravery\, identity\, nature\, and subverting expectations. She lives in Utah with her four dogs. Nowhere for Very Long is her first book.

SUMMARY:Jeffrey Greene (Masters of Tonewood: The Hidden Art of Fine Stringed-Instrument Making) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Jeffrey Greene for the new book\, Masters of Tonewood: The Hidden Art of Fine Stringed-Instrument Making. This is a partner event with Spindrift Guitars in New London! \nAbout the Book\nThe wood used by master craftsmen to create many of the world’s legendary stringed instruments—violins and cellos\, mandolins and guitars—comes from seven near-mythic European forests. In his latest book\, Jeffrey Greene takes the reader into those woodlands and into luthiers’ workshops to show us how the world’s finest instruments not only contribute to great musical art but are prized works of art in themselves. \nMasters of Tonewood describes the “hidden life” of stringed instruments\, beginning with the unique wood\, expertly chosen and sometimes cured for decades\, that gives them voices that rivet audiences. Greene takes us to forests in Italy\, France\, Switzerland\, Austria\, Romania\, Poland\, and the Czech Republic. We are introduced to the acoustical and aesthetic properties of the spruce that Stradivari treasured\, and the mystery of why just one in a thousand maple trees contains decorative figuring worthy of the highest-quality instruments. Greene visits the greatest traditional centers of this craft\, from Spain to the United States. He recounts the ideas and experiences of tonewood millers\, luthiers\, and musicians and discusses their concerns about environmental issues associated with a tradition dependent on ancient woodlands in a modern world. \nAbout Jeffrey Greene\nJeffrey Greene takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the forests of Europe and with every page richly uncovers the mysteries held within the tonewood of the finest stringed instruments ever made.

SUMMARY:Sharon Dukett (No Rules: A Memoir) Author Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a weekend book signing with Sharon Dukett for the release of the new book No Rules: A Memoir. \nAbout the Book\nIn this coming-of-age memoir\, Sharon takes you with her on a nail-biting adventure through the early 1970s after leaving her sheltered home life at sixteen years old to join the hippies. Yearning for freedom\, she lands in an adult world for which she is unprepared\, and must learn quickly in order to survive. \nAs Sharon navigates the US and Canada—whether by hitchhiking\, bicycle\, or the back of a motorcycle—she experiences love and heartbreak\, discovers who she can and cannot trust\, and awakens to the Women’s Liberation movement while living in a rural off-grid commune. In this colorful memoir\, she reflects upon the changes that reshaped her during that decade\, and how the ways in which she and her peers threw off the rules meant to keep women in their place has transformed and empowered the lives of girls and women today. \nAbout the Author\nSharon Dukett has been a computer programmer\, deputy director in state government\, cocktail waitress\, and project manager (PMP certified)\, and she has designed and embroidered handmade clothing. She travels extensively using loyalty points and avoiding tourist traps. When she is home\, she and her husband live in central Connecticut in a house he built that overlooks the Connecticut River―the house they raised their family in. When not writing or blogging\, she is reading\, skiing\, biking\, golfing\, spending time with family and friends\, creating clutter\, and committing to more activities than she probably should. She loves reading memoir from a variety of backgrounds―to learn how others feel\, experience life\, and deal with their struggles. No Rules is her debut memoir.

SUMMARY:Leah Angstman (Out Front the Following Sea) Author Talk and Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents Leah Angstman discussing the book Out Front the Following Sea. This event will be moderated by Nancy Burns-Fusaro from the Westerly Sun. \nAbout the Book\nOut Front the Following Sea is a historical epic of one woman’s survival in a time when the wilderness is still wild\, heresy is publicly punishable\, and being independent is worse than scorned—it is a death sentence. At the onset of King William’s War between French and English settlers in 1689 New England\, Ruth Miner is accused of witchcraft for the murder of her parents and must flee the brutality of her town. She stows away on the ship of the only other person who knows her innocence: an audacious sailor—Owen—bound to her by years of attraction\, friendship\, and shared secrets. But when Owen’s French ancestry finds him at odds with a violent English commander\, the turmoil becomes life-or-death for the sailor\, the headstrong Ruth\, and the cast of Quakers\, Pequot Indians\, soldiers\, highwaymen\, and townsfolk dragged into the fray. Now Ruth must choose between sending Owen to the gallows or keeping her own neck from the noose. \nAbout the Author\nLeah Angstman is a historian and transplanted Michigander. Her writing has been a finalist for the Saluda River Prize\, Cowles Book Prize\, Able Muse Book Award\, Bevel Summers Fiction Prize\, and Chaucer Book Award\, and has appeared in Publishers Weekly\, L.A. Review of Books\, Electric Literature\, Nashville Review\, Slice\, and elsewhere. She serves as editor-in-chief for Alternating Current and vice chair for a Colorado historical commission.
