SUMMARY:Adventures in Collage for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 10th\, 1-2PM \nDive into the imaginative world of collage art in our “Adventures in Collage” class! Designed for young artists aged 7-12\, this 45-minute session is a playground for creativity and experimentation. \nIn this class\, students will have the exciting opportunity to create a still-life collage using a variety of 2D materials. We encourage our young artists to bring any flat\, 2D items they find interesting – like comic pages\, leaves\, newspaper clippings\, pages from old books\, or scraps of fabric. Remember\, these materials will become part of your art masterpiece\, so choose items that are not precious to you. \nOur focus is on exploration\, creation\, and experimentation. Students will learn how to blend different textures\, colors\, and shapes to craft a unique work of art on paper. The class emphasizes the joy of discovery and the freedom to express oneself through the versatile medium of collage. \nMaterials Needed: Bring your choice of flat 2D materials (we will also have some on hand). All other necessary supplies will be provided. \nThis hands-on\, interactive class is held at Spark Makerspace\, located at 7 Union Street\, New London\, CT. \nPlease be aware that the class fee is non-refundable. Prepare to embark on a journey of artistic exploration and bring your imagination to life! \n$15 for Spark members; $20 for the public

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Cultural Heritage through Art: A Lecture Series \nWelcome to Celebrating Cultural Heritage through Art\, a virtual programming series of art lectures dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of prominent artists in Black History for February\, Women’s History for March\, and Jewish Heritage for April to recognize Holocaust Remembrance Day. This series is hosted by the Mystic & Noank Library and co-sponsored by the Groton Public Library\, Otis Library\, Public Library of New London\, Stonington Free Library\, and Waterford Public Library. Join us each month for accompanying in-person art workshops hosted by the Mystic Museum of Art on different dates at 5 different public libraries in SECT.\nFierce Females: Women in Art\nMon. March 11th from 6-7 PM \nWomen have long been the subject of art\, often depicted as nothing more than objects of desire. How do images of women change when women become the creators? This program examines the history of women in art in brief and then explores the lives\, careers and works of several major women artists from the Renaissance to the twentieth century\, including Artemisia Gentileschi and Mary Cassatt.

SUMMARY:Growing Your Garden and a Fairer Food System
DESCRIPTION:March 28\, April 4 & April 11 \nHunger is on the rise. In August of 2022\, 17% of adults in Connecticut surveyed did not have enough money to buy food\, nearly double the amount from the year prior. And in the most recent state report on food insecurity in Connecticut\, New London County saw the greatest rate of increase in food insecurity among families and children. Community solutions and support for food aid are more urgent than ever. \nJoin us for a 3-week free educational programming series about gardening to reduce hunger and working for a fairer food system. Each program pairs an expert on gardening with an expert on food justice who will instruct attendees how to sustain a successful garden\, seek out or support food aid organizations\, and understand the barriers to and fight for fair food access in the U.S. and in New London County. Inspired by the gardening-based food aid and food justice work at the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center’s Craig Floyd Giving Garden and F.R.E.S.H. New London’s community gardens and advocacy\, this programming series will empower participants to be a part of the solution to end hunger while learning to grow their own fresh produce. \nWeek 1: Thursday\, March 28\, 6 – 7:30\nSuccessful Seed Starting\nMargie Sydney\, UConn Cooperative Extension Master Gardener\nFood Justice 101\nVania Galicia\, Grow Windham \nWeek 2: Thursday\, April 4\, 6 – 7:30\nSoil Blocks: Create & Manage Seedlings & Cuttings\nMark Gostkiewicz\, Owner & Farm Manager at Tri Gable Lea Farm LLC\nThe Industrial Food System: Catalyst of a Personal & Professional Journey\nAli Ghiorse\, Founder of The Foodshed Network \nWeek 3: Thursday\, April 11\, 6 – 7:30\nStarting & Managing a Giving Garden\nCraig Floyd\, Former Farm Manager of the Craig Floyd Giving Garden\nFood Aid & Distribution in New London County\nAnnie Stockton\, Vice President of the Gemma E.
