SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Read of the Day with Steven Rowley (The Guncle)
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The Day present a Read of the Day event with Steven Rowley for the new book\, The Guncle.\nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nAbout the Book\nFrom the bestselling author of Lily and the Octopus and The Editor comes a warm and deeply funny novel about a once-famous gay sitcom star whose unexpected family tragedy leaves him with his niece and nephew for the summer. \nPatrick\, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP\, for short)\, has always loved his niece\, Maisie\, and nephew\, Grant. That is\, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits\, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children\, no matter how adorable\, Patrick is\, honestly\, overwhelmed. \nSo when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick’s brother has a health crisis of his own\, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Despite having a set of “Guncle Rules” ready to go\, Patrick has no idea what to expect\, having spent years barely holding on after the loss of his great love\, a somewhat-stalled acting career\, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to a six- and a nine-year-old. Quickly realizing that parenting–even if temporary–isn’t solved with treats and jokes\, Patrick’s eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility\, and the realization that\, sometimes\, even being larger than life means you’re unfailingly human. \nWith the humor and heart we’ve come to expect from bestselling author Steven Rowley\, The Guncle is a moving tribute to the power of love\, patience\, and family in even the most trying of times. \nAbout the Author\nSteven Rowley is the author of The Editor and the national bestseller Lily and the Octopus\, which has been translated into nineteen languages. He has worked as a freelance writer\, newspaper columnist\, and screenwriter. Originally from Portland\, Maine\, Rowley is a graduate of Emerson College. He lives in Palm Springs\, California.

SUMMARY:Author Talk at Bank Square Books: Nicholas Checker (The Saga of Marathon)
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Nicholas Checker for his new book The Saga of Marathon. Nick will be joined by special guests Amby Burfoot\, and musician Rick Spencer. Light refreshments will also be offered. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nThe teenage son of a hetaera (woman of pleasure)\, Pheidippides and his beautiful young mother are not recognized as citizens of ancient Athens. Yet he is enchanted with the essence of the grand city-state and all the promise it holds. His short daily runs are on mere delivery errands\, but he aspires to one day be among the elite foot couriers who run up to fifty miles on vital missions of state. When an impending invasion from faraway Persia\, the world’s most powerful empire–led by a temperamental tyrant bent on destroying democracy–threatens Athens and the entire land of squabbling Greek city-states\, Pheidippides must undertake a grueling solitary trek to outrun enemy ships heading for his beloved city. Chased by assassins over a distance more than four times his usual runs\, can he save Athens and its fledgling democratic ideals…and at what cost? \nAbout Nicholas Checker\nNicholas Checker has two more published novels through another traditional publication company: Scratch and Druids\, Oak Tree Press\, CA; a stream of short stories that includes Shenandoah Magazine at Washington & Lee University; and an impressive number of independent films including the award winning short\, The Curse of Micah Rood\, starring former sitcom star\, Ron Palillo from the old Welcome Back Kotter TV series; and stage plays Elegy for an Icon — regarding the controversial John Mason Statue and the Pequot War — first performed at the Eugene O’Neill Theater; and his musical stage play\, Run to Elysia (music by Rick Spencer)\, also first performed at the Eugene O’Neill Theater … the very work from which Checker adapted The Saga of Marathon. \nSpecial guest speaker will be Mystic’s own Amby Burfoot — former Boston Marathon winner (protege of Mystic’s Johnny Kelley\, Boston Marathon winner and whose statue graces downtown Mystic); Amby has also gone to Greece and run the very same Marathon course as the legendary Pheidippides; and is the retired executive editor of Runner’s World Magazine; Amby is now a freelance writer with several books out and is still running. \nAlso included at the event will be songwriter & musician\, Rick Spencer who wrote the music & lyrics for the stage play written by Nicholas Checker\, Run to Elysia which premiered some years ago at the Eugene O’Neill Theater in Waterford. Checker adapted The Saga of Marathon novel from this play. Spencer will play and sing songs from Run to Elysia as the crowd files into the book store and is getting seated … and will also provide a soft instrumental backdrop to portions of Checker’s dramatic readings from his book. For further information on Rick Spencer\, visit: http://www.catfeather.com/

SUMMARY:Book Party Launch at Savoy Bookshop: Debbi Michiko Florence (Just Be Cool\, Jenna Sakai)
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents a book launch party with Debbi Michiko Florence for the release of the new book Just Be Cool\, Jenna Sakai! This is going to be an incredible event featuring the chance to win great prizes\, a wonderful author talk and Q&A\, and special treats! \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nFans of Lisa Greenwald and Wendy Mass are sure to fall head-over-heels for this funny\, sweet story of crushes\, competition\, and the confusing reality of middle school. \n“Heartbreak is for suckers.” \nWhen Jenna Sakai gets dumped over winter break\, it confirms what she learned from her parents’ messy divorce: Relationships are risky and only lead to disappointment. So even though she still has to see her ex-boyfriend Elliott at newspaper club\, Jenna is going to be totally heartless this semester — no boys\, just books. \nBut keeping her cool isn’t always easy. Jenna’s chief competition for a big journalism scholarship is none other than Elliott. Her best friend Keiko always seems busy with her own boyfriend. And cute-but-incredibly-annoying Rin Watanabe keeps stealing her booth at the diner she’s been hiding at every day after school. Rin is every bit as stubborn and detached as Jenna. And the more Jenna gets to know him\, the more intriguing a mystery he seems. Soon Jenna is starting to realize that being a loner is kind of\, well\, lonely. And letting people in might just be a risk worth taking. \nAbout Debbi Michiko Florence\nDebbi Michiko Florence is the author of Keep It Together\, Keiko Carter\, a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection and New England Book Award finalist\, and the Jasmine Toguchi chapter books. A third-generation Japanese American and native Californian\, Debbi lives in Connecticut with her husband\, rescue dog\, rabbit\, and duck. Visit her online at debbimichikoflorence.com.

SUMMARY:Virtual Program: Music for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:Many musicians had a close connection to birds. Richard Wagner owned two parrots. Other than music and trains\, Antonin Dvorak’s greatest passion was for his flock of pigeons. One pianist lived in a Paris apartment with 121 parrots and cockatoos (as well as two apes!). Gustav Mahler was an exception. He entrusted his wife Alma to find a summer cottage in the woods where there were no birds so he could compose in silence. \nA large number of composers have been inspired by bird song since at least Clemens Non Papa (death around 1556) and his “Reveil des Oiseaux.” During the following centuries\, much music was written about cuckoos\, cockerels\, ducks\, larks\, magpies\, nightingales\, owls\, parrots\, swans\, wood doves and unhatched chicks. \nJeffrey Engel will present several musical works by bird loving composers of the past 400 years in this musical celebration of this year’s Summer Reading theme: Tails & Tales. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. You will receive a Zoom invitation the morning of the program.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Chevy Stevens (Dark Roads)
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present an author talk and Q&A with Chevy Stevens for the new book Dark Roads. Chevy will be in conversation with fellow thriller writer Jennifer Hillier. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\n“Chevy Stevens is a brilliant and unique talent and Dark Roads is an instant classic. My hat’s off to her.” ― C. J. Box\, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Long Range \nThe Cold Creek Highway stretches close to five hundred miles through British Columbia’s rugged wilderness to the west coast. Isolated and vast\, it has become a prime hunting ground for predators. For decades\, young women traveling the road have gone missing. Motorists and hitchhikers\, those passing through or living in one of the small towns scattered along the region\, have fallen prey time and again. And no killer or abductor who has stalked the highway has ever been brought to justice. \nHailey McBride calls Cold Creek home. Her father taught her to respect nature\, how to live and survive off the land\, and to never travel the highway alone. Now he’s gone\, leaving her a teenage orphan in the care of her aunt whose police officer husband uses his badge as a means to bully and control Hailey. Overwhelmed by grief and forbidden to work\, socialize\, or date\, Hailey vanishes into the mountainous terrain\, hoping everyone will believe she’s left town. Rumors spread that she was taken by the highway killer―who’s claimed another victim over the summer. \nOne year later\, Beth Chevalier arrives in Cold Creek\, where her sister Amber lived―and where she was murdered. Estranged from her parents and seeking closure\, Beth takes a waitressing job at the local diner\, just as Amber did\, desperate to understand what happened to her and why. But Beth’s search for answers puts a target on her back―and threatens to reveal the truth behind Hailey’s disappearance… \nAbout Chevy Stevens\nCHEVY STEVENS lives on Vancouver Island with her husband and daughter. When she isn’t working on her next book\, she’s hiking with her two dogs on her favorite mountain trails and spending time with her family. Chevy’s current obsessions are vintage Airstreams\, Hollywood memoirs\, all things mid-century modern\, and stand-up comedians–not necessarily in that order. Her books\, including Still Missing\, a New York Times bestseller and winner of the International Thriller Writers Award for Best First Novel\, have been published in more than thirty countries. \nAbout Jennifer Hillier\nJENNIFER HILLIER was born and raised in Toronto\, Canada\, lived in the Seattle area for years\, and has just moved back to Toronto with her husband and son. Jennifer is the author of Wonderland\, Creep\, and Jar of Hearts.

SUMMARY:Local Authors Writing Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve always wanted to write\, but don’t know where to start\, join us for this Zoom writing workshop series instructed by local authors this summer. See all the dates\, titles\, and authors included below. Each author will introduce participants to their published works\, instruct on the craft of writing\, and provide exercises and time to share writing related to their genre. \nWe are offering this series as part of our adult summer reading program. Check out our programming related booklists to start reading! \nNavigating Nonfiction: Write Compelling True Stories | Ruth Crocker\nMonday\, June 28 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM\nNonfiction writing (memoir\, autobiography\, personal essay\, journalism\, and more) is sometimes thought of as the stodgy\, boring stepsister of glittering\, exciting fiction. In fact\, the opposite is true. You can’t make this stuff up! It’s all in how you tell the story. This workshop will take you through the process of zeroing in on true stories and crafting them with the same tools and techniques that fiction writers use to bring words to life on the page. We’ll explore theme\, structure\, voice\, dialogue and more\, along with exercises for sourcing material from life experience. Read more about Ruth Crocker in her bio\, and her publications on her website. \nWriting Fiction: The Art of Storytelling | Susan Kietzman\nMonday\, July 12 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM\nA writer brings to a story unique perspective\, voice\, and imagination — all of which shape how the story is told. In this workshop\, we’ll explore the creation of fiction\, as well as dive into some key elements: character\, setting\, dialogue\, plot\, and point of view. We’ll talk about style\, discipline\, and what it takes to turn your idea into a novel. Be prepared to write\, discuss\, and learn from one another. Read more about Susan Kietzman in her bio\, and her publications on her website. \nWriting Through Trauma: Steps for Post Traumatic Growth | Regina Bartlett\nMonday\, July 26 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM \nPain. Anxiety. Fear. Depression. What if the source of your greatest struggle became the key to your freedom? This workshop will show you steps to take to look inward – in your own time – and discover how to use writing as a healing place and channel past pain points to forge a path for growth. Prompts will gently guide you to excavate your past\, and provide the tools to craft your story into something meaningful for others to read. Read more about Regina Bartlett in her bio\, and her publications and other speaking engagements on her website. \nGet Published with a Small Press | Leslie M Browning\nMonday\, August 2 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM \nYou’ve joined in our local authors writing workshop series\, you’ve started some stories of your own\, and now the question arises… How do I get published? Among many other options\, like finding an agent\, sending out query letters\, and self-publishing\, this program will help you explore an option you may not have considered before: publishing with a small press. Local author Leslie M Browning\, and founder of the small press Homebound Publications based in Stonington\, will close our local authors writing workshop series with this introduction to publishing with a small press: what they are\, the kinds of authors and stories they publish\, and how you can submit your work to them. Celebrate ten years of business operations for Homebound Publications and learn more about the important role small presses have in today’s publishing landscape. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. SUMMARY:Free Summer Concerts\, The IRONS at Hilton Mystic
DESCRIPTION:Live on the patio. Beer\, wine\, and dinner options available for sale \nBobby T and The Name Droppers. In 1972\, Bobby’s big break came after re-locating to Laurel\, Mississippi\, replacing drummer Keith Thibodeaux who had just left ‘David & the Giants’. The group was touring non-stop while Bobby’s reputation kept on growing. \nThe number of bands and musicians Bobby T has worked with over the years reads like a “Who’s Who” of the music business. With no signs of slowing down\, he appears busier than ever before. ‘T’ is presently gigging with four different groups. The Sin Sisters. 8 And Up\, Fairly Famous\, and the Jay Willie Blues Band. Thunderhead has also recorded a new album entitled ‘Alive Again’ with the title track written by Bobby T Torello. Bobby’s longevity in a tough business is a testament to his dedication and love for music. Like any professional musician\, he has had to overcome a few obstacles along the way. None of these have prevented him from achieving his rightful place in drumming history.
