SUMMARY:Talk with Andy Peters: Insights from Britain's Last Shipcarver
DESCRIPTION:Describing himself as “Britain’s last shipcarver\,” Andy Peters is a traditional woodcarver of the highest level\, having attained mastery of nearly vanished skills and a deep understanding of the technical\, cultural\, and historic aspects of European ship decoration during the 17th through 19th centuries. As an author of two books about this golden age of shipcarving\, Andy passes his insight to future generations. He is connected to practitioners of many other rare and high-level maritime skills involved in historic ship preservation and sail training. On Saturday\, October 5\, at 3:30 p.m.\, Mystic Seaport Museum will host Andy Peters’ public presentation in the Meeting House as he speaks about his life’s work as shipcarver for Europe’s traditional sailing ships\, restoring many ancient figureheads\, and now designing and carving exquisite decorations for large yachts and mega yachts.

SUMMARY:Writers Group
DESCRIPTION:We welcome local writers for free-write sessions at 4 p.m.\, Mondays\, in the Ames Room. The sessions are open to anyone who feels like writing. \nLoosely based on the notion of stream-of-consciousness writing described by Natalie Goldberg in “Writing Down the Bones\,” the sessions are broken into three parts of 5 minutes\, 10 minutes\, and 5 minutes. A writer selects a topic from subjects previously placed in a box. For the first 5 minutes\, write whatever comes to mind. Don’t stop to correct\, just record whatever pops into your head\, even if it’s something like\, “I have no idea what to write…” Each person shares what they’ve written\, free of commentary or criticism. \nThen\, for 10 minutes\, writers write what comes to mind\, perhaps an idea or a subject someone had just read aloud or something you wrote in the first 5 minutes will lead to a focus. The group shares again. Writers write for another 5 minutes and then share. \nYou’ll be surprised at the places you’ll go with the topics in these sessions. They give you an opportunity to express yourself\, they’re therapeutic\, and they often lead to a lot to talk about after putting your pens down.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Serigraphs and Monoprinting
DESCRIPTION:Serigraph (also known as silkscreen) printing is a versatile and widely used method in both printmaking and textile design. It involves creating images on a screen and transferring ink through fine mesh onto various surfaces using a squeegee resulting in vibrant\, precise shapes of color. \nIn this introductory course led by artist and experienced printmaker D Derek\, we will learn the rich history and techniques of serigraph printing and create unique monoprints using the serigraph process. We will explore water-based serigraph techniques using water-soluble watercolors and gouache. We will also learn about color theory\, drawing techniques\, and composition principles to gain an understanding of creating visually compelling artworks. \nNo prior experience in printmaking is necessary to enroll in this workshop\, making it accessible for beginners and those looking to expand their artistic skills. The workshop is limited to 15 students\, allowing for ample opportunity for individualized guidance from the instructor. \nAdditionally\, the workshop includes a guided gallery tour of the current museum exhibition\, Printmaking and the Unconventional Pathways of African American Artists\, to deepen your understanding and appreciation of the art form. Taught by D Derek. \nAges: Youth and Adults\nMembers $125 / Non-Members $140\nTo register\, call 860.536.7601\, x211.
