SUMMARY:Digital Program: Marine Bioinvasions of the Mystic River Estuary
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual program\, in collaboration with the Mystic Seaport\, to learn more about local wildlife\, ecosystems\, and the changing environment right in downtown Mystic. We will explore the overall biodiversity of the marine life of the Mystic River Estuary\, and then focus on the history of introduced species over the past 200 years\, and the continuing invasions into modern times. In addition to historic changes in the local ecosystem\, attendees will learn about human impact on this local ecosystem and how the realities of invasive species and climate change will shape the Mystic River Estuary in the coming years. \nAfter attending this event\, join us for a Guided Tour of the Mystic River Estuary at the Mystic Seaport with Dr. Carlton. The library will sponsor attendance for up to 30 participants. The tour will begin at the Mystic Seaport on Friday\, October 15 at 5 PM. Register here. Please only register if you are certain you can attend. \nSpeaker Bio\nDr. James T. Carlton is a Professor of Marine Sciences Emeritus at Williams College (Williamstown\, Massachusetts USA) and Director (1989-2015) Emeritus of the Williams College – Mystic Seaport Ocean and Coastal Studies Program (Mystic\, Connecticut). Jim is the only scientist to receive the Interagency Recognition Award from the United States Federal Government for his national and international work to reduce the impacts of exotic species invasions in the sea. Jim received his undergraduate degree in Paleontology from the University of California-Berkeley\, his Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of California-Davis\, and did his postdoctoral work at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. SUMMARY:Leah Weiss (All the Little Hopes) Author Talk and Q&A at Savoy Bookshop & Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Leah Weiss for the new book\, All the Little Hopes.\nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nA Southern story of friendship forged by books and bees\, when the timeless troubles of growing up meet the murky shadows of World War II. \nDeep in the tobacco land of North Carolina\, nothing’s been the same since the boys shipped off to war and worry took their place. Thirteen-year-old Lucy Brown is precocious and itching for adventure. Then Allie Bert Tucker wanders into town\, an outcast with a puzzling past\, and Lucy figures the two of them can solve any curious crime they find―just like her hero\, Nancy Drew. \nTheir chance comes when a man goes missing\, a woman stops speaking\, and an eccentric gives the girls a mystery to solve that takes them beyond the ordinary. Their quiet town\, seasoned with honeybees and sweet tea\, becomes home to a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp. More men go missing. And together\, the girls embark on a journey to discover if we ever really know who the enemy is. \nLush with Southern atmosphere\, All The Little Hopes is the story of two girls growing up as war creeps closer\, blurring the difference between what’s right\, what’s wrong\, and what we know to be true. \nAbout Leah Weiss\nLEAH WEISS is a Southern writer born in North Carolina and raised in the foothills of Virginia. Her debut novel If the Creek Don’t Rise was released in August of 2017. Her short stories have been published in The Simple Life magazine\, Every Day Fiction and Deep South Magazine. SUMMARY:Tom Verde (In a Class All Their Own) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Tom Verde to discuss his book\, In a Class All Their Own: Unique and Historic Boats of New England. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nEach boat has a story to tell and this book features nearly forty profiles of classic/unique boats\, drawn from articles written for the Westerly Sun newspaper during the summers of 2014 and 2015. Explore not only the histories of the individual vessels\, but of their classes and designers\, as well as their relationships to the environs in which they sailed\, raced\, cruised and\, in some case\, still operate as working vessels. These stories include the fabled history of the catboat; the first fiberglass sailing yacht; a NY ferry boat repurposed as a houseboat; the oldest working fishing boat in Stonington\, CT; racing rivalries in the Sound; the French love affair with American boat designs; and the Jazz Age era of luxury yachting\, among others. \nAbout the Author\nTom Verde is a freelance journalist who writes for the New York Times\, National Public Radio\, AramcoWorld magazine\, the New London Day\, and the Westerly Sun. On his first solo sail\, on the Charles River in Boston\, he ran aground\, collided with the Longfellow Bridge\, and generally enjoyed himself. He lives in Pawcatuck\, Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Who Gets To Be An American? One Chinese Immigrant's View
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this talk and community conversation led by local resident\, Phoebe Huang\, in connection to this year’s One Book One Region selection: Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu. Integrating her own personal experiences as a Chinese immigrant\, research\, and current events\, her talk explores the differences between ethnicity\, race\, nationality\, and citizenship in order to elborate on the question raised by Charles Yu in Interior Chinatown: “Who gets to be an American?” Her full description and bio is below. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. You will receive a Zoom invitation the morning of the program. \nTalk Description\n“Who gets to be an American?” Not only Asians\, but almost every immigrant to this country has grappled with where they fit in the national identity. \nMy family was fortunate to be granted asylum in the United States in 1950. My father\, a Chinese diplomat who served as Deputy Foreign Minister\, was forced to leave the Mainland when the Communist Regime took power. I arrived at the age of 4; and while I have been embraced by this country\, have been proud to become a US citizen\, the issue of ‘who gets to be an American?’ truly American\, not a hyphenated-American\, is still front and center. \nThis talk hopes to open a dialogue on that important question. The answer is fundamental to who we are as a country\, and how we survive ongoing global dislocations of every variety. \nSpeaker Bio\nPhoebe K Huang has held executive positions in major U.S. Financial Services companies. She became a Master Gardener and put that know-how into creating vegetable and flower gardens\, a highlight of her life. In retirement\, she is now re-exploring her world through writing. She earned her BA from Mt. Holyoke (1967) and her PhD from the University of Connecticut (1977).
