SUMMARY:Digital Program: On the Margins of a Movement: The Accidental Feminist
DESCRIPTION:One hundred years after the ratification of the 19th Amendment comes a reflective historical fiction novel with a compelling contemporary voice. \nDiscussions of the women’s suffrage movement largely center around the wealthy\, charismatic leaders. Theirs are the names we’re taught in school\, the ones we see in textbooks and documentaries. Yet\, when so few names are immortalized\, one must wonder who marched alongside these women but have since been forgotten. In The Accidental Suffragist\, Galia Gichon explores this pivotal time in history through the eyes of a struggling factory worker. Examining the impact of economic class revealed a hidden voice — a woman with different motivations for joining the fight\, someone with an awful lot on the line. \nGichon’s The Accidental Suffragist tells the story of Helen Fox\, a garment worker living in New York’s tenements. After surviving the historic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire\, Helen becomes consumed by the suffrage movement\, propelled by the ways it could radically reshape her life. When her newfound activism puts her at odds with her husband and neighbors\, she has to decide whether to put family first\, or to risk everything in hopes of a better life. \n“Gichon reminds us of the grave sacrifices so many women made more than a century ago and the debt of gratitude we owe them today” -Alisyn Camerota\, CNN Anchor \nRegistration is required to attend this program. You will receive a Zoom invitation the morning of the program.

SUMMARY:Spencer Quinn (It's a Wonderful Woof) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Spencer Quinn for the latest book in the Chet & Bernie Mystery Series\, It’s a Wonderful Woof. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nSpencer Quinn’s It’s a Wonderful Woof presents a holiday adventure for Chet the dog\, “the most lovable narrator in crime fiction” (Boston Globe)\, and his human partner\, PI Bernie Little. \nHoliday time in the Valley\, and in the holiday spirit—despite the dismal shape of the finances at the Little Detective Agency—Bernie refers a potential client to Victor Klovsky\, a fellow private eye. It’s also true that the case—promising lots of online research but little action—doesn’t appeal to Bernie\, while it seems perfect for Victor\, who is not cut out for rough stuff. But Victor disappears in a rough-stuff way\, and when he doesn’t show up at his mom’s to light the Hanukkah candles\, she hires Chet and Bernie to find him. \nThey soon discover that Victor’s client has also vanished. The trail leads to the ruins of a mission called Nuestra Señora de los Saguaros\, dating back to the earliest Spanish explorers. Some very dangerous people are interested in the old mission. Does some dusty archive hold the secret of a previously unknown art treasure\, possibly buried for centuries? What does the Flight into Egypt—when Mary\, Joseph and the baby Jesus fled Herod—have to do with saguaros\, the Sonoran desert cactus? \nNo one is better than Chet at nosing out buried secrets\, but before he can\, he and Bernie are forced to take flight themselves\, chased through a Christmas Eve blizzard by a murderous foe who loves art all too much. \nAbout Spencer Quinn\nSpencer Quinn is the pen name for Peter Abrahams\, the Edgar-winning\, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Chet and Bernie mystery series\, as well as the #1 New York Times bestselling Bowser and Birdie series for middle-grade readers. He lives on Cape Cod with his wife Diana and dog Pearl.

SUMMARY:Gunilla Norris (Calling the Creatures: Poems) Author Talk and Q&A at Savoy Bookshop & Café
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Gunilla Norris for the new poetry collection\, Calling the Creatures! \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nGunilla Norris has written a book that spans decades of her life. She invites us to wonder what calls us into recollection. It is always a mystery when an inner voice asks for attention. In a long life\, that call can be insistent and want a welcome for a vast array of experiences. Gunilla likens this to the calling of farm animals back to the barn after foraging all day which she witnessed in northern Sweden as a child. \nMeaningful experiences\, be they losses\, loves\, queries or epiphanies\, want sanctuary. If the doors of the heart are open\, the recollections can enter again\, come back home so to speak and be recognized as the poems of a life. \nAbout Gunilla Norris\nGunilla Norris’ parents were world travelers in the Swedish diplomatic corps and so she grew up essentially in three places: Argentina\, Sweden and the United States. As a child she was given a rich exposure to different languages and cultures. \nShe received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and her M.S. from Bridgeport University in the field of human development. She is a mother and a grandmother. She has been a psychotherapist in private practice for more than fourty-five years and has felt privileged to accompany many people on their journeys to growth and healing. Her special love has been teaching meditation and leading contemplative workshops of many kinds. \nAs a writer Gunilla has published eleven children’s books\, three books of poetry and then books on spirituality including: Being Home\, Becoming Bread\, Inviting Silence\, A Mystic Garden\, Simple Ways and Sheltered in the Heart.

SUMMARY:Digital Program: Hooking the Reader: Polishing Your First Line and First Page

Be prepared to write\, discuss\, and learn from one another. \nSpeaker Bio\nLaurel S. Peterson is a Professor of English at Norwalk Community College. SUMMARY:Stephen Kurczy (The Quiet Zone) Author Talk and Q&A at Savoy Bookshop & Café
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Stephen Kurczy for the new book\, The Quiet Zone. \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nA stunning portrait of an Appalachian community\, the people who call it home\, and the enduring human quest for quiet \nDeep in the Appalachian Mountains lies the last truly quiet town in America. Green Bank\, West Virginia\, is a place at once futuristic and old-fashioned: It’s home to the Green Bank Observatory\, where astronomers search the depths of the universe using the latest technology\, while schoolchildren go without WiFi or iPads. With a ban on all devices emanating radio frequencies that might interfere with the observatory’s telescopes\, Quiet Zone residents live a life free from constant digital connectivity. But a community that on the surface seems idyllic is a place of contradictions\, where the provincial meets the seemingly supernatural and quiet can serve as a cover for something darker. \nStephen Kurczy embedded in Green Bank\, making the residents of this small Appalachian village his neighbors. He shopped at the town’s general store\, attended church services\, went target shooting with a seven-year-old\, square-danced with the locals\, sampled the local moonshine. In The Quiet Zone\, he introduces us to an unforgettable cast of characters. There is a tech buster patrolling the area for illegal radio waves; “electrosensitives” who claim that WiFi is deadly; a sheriff’s department with a string of unsolved murder cases dating back decades; a camp of neo-Nazis plotting their resurgence from a nearby mountain hollow. Amongst them all are the ordinary citizens seeking a simpler way of living. Kurczy asks: Is a less connected life desirable? Is it even possible? \nThe Quiet Zone is a remarkable work of investigative journalism—at once a stirring ode to place\, a tautly-wound tale of mystery\, and a clarion call to reexamine the role technology plays in our lives. \nAbout Stephen Kurczy\nStephen Kurczy is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, and The Christian Science Monitor\, among other outlets. He graduated from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism\, where he was a 2016-2017 Knight-Bagehot Fellow in Business and Economics Journalism. Kurczy has lived without a cell phone for over a decade.

SUMMARY:A Journey to the Future with authors Kathryn Hulick and Kelly Weinersmith Virtual Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café present a Journey to the Future author talk and Q&A with authors Kathryn Hulick (Welcome to the Future) and Kelly Weinersmith (Soonish). \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nThe New York Times bestseller Soonish and the newly released kids’ book Welcome to the Future both take readers on a journey through technologies that may transform our world. The authors of these two futuristic titles will talk about the future and answer your questions in an event that is perfect for families. Older teens and adults will love the humor and insightful visions of Soonish\, created by Kelly Weinersmith\, a biologist who studies parasites\, and her husband Zach Weinersmith\, who is a cartoonist and the creator of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal Comics. Kids and teens in middle school and high school will enjoy the fascinating technology and deep questions posed by Welcome to the Future\, written by Kathryn Hulick and illustrated by Marci Wolski. \nAbout Welcome to the Future\nHave you ever wondered what the future may look like? In this book\, you’ll explore 10 ways technology could alter our way of life. The challenge for you is to decide which changes you want for yourself and the world. \nIn the future\, will we teleport from place to place\, keep dinosaurs as pets\, or 3D-print our dinner? Will we live on Mars or upload our brains to computers? Could we solve climate change by making all our energy from mini stars we build here on earth? In this book\, you’ll meet the scientists working to bring science fiction to life and learn how soon we might have amazing new technology. You’ll also delve deep into questions about right and wrong. Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should. How can we build the best possible future for everyone on Earth? \nAbout Soonish\nFrom a top scientist and the creator of the hugely popular web comic Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal\, a hilariously illustrated investigation into future technologies — from how to fling a ship into deep space on the cheap to 3D organ printing\nWhat will the world of tomorrow be like? How does progress happen? And why do we not have a lunar colony already? What is the hold-up? \nIn this smart and funny book\, celebrated cartoonist Zach Weinersmith and noted researcher Dr. Kelly Weinersmith give us a snapshot of what’s coming next — from robot swarms to nuclear fusion powered-toasters. By weaving their own research\, interviews with the scientists who are making these advances happen\, and Zach’s trademark comics\, the Weinersmiths investigate why these technologies are needed\, how they would work\, and what is standing in their way. New technologies are almost never the work of isolated geniuses with a neat idea. A given future technology may need any number of intermediate technologies to develop first\, and many of these critical advances may appear to be irrelevant when they are first discovered. The journey to progress is full of strange detours and blind alleys that tell us so much about the human mind and the march of civilization. \nTo this end\, Soonish investigates ten different emerging fields\, from programmable matter to augmented reality\, from space elevators to robotic construction\, to show us the amazing world we will have\, you know\, soonish. \nAbout Kathryn Hulick\nKathryn Hulick is an author\, freelance writer\, and former Peace Corps volunteer. She writes regularly for Science News for Students and Muse magazine. Her books cover topics such as video games\, artificial intelligence\, dinosaurs\, and more. STRANGE BUT TRUE (Quarto\, 2019) explores the science behind paranormal mysteries. Hulick’s favorite part of writing about science is getting to speak with researchers in many different fields. Once\, she spoke with an expert on parallel universes while he was shoveling snow from his driveway. Another time\, she called a biologist who was out in the field in Africa\, watching a herd of elephants. In addition to writing\, she enjoys hiking\, gardening\, painting and reading. Hulick lives in Massachusetts with her husband\, son and dog. \nAbout Kelly Weinersmith\nDr. Kelly Weinersmith received her PhD in Ecology at the University of California Davis\, and is an adjunct faculty member in the BioSciences department at Rice University. Kelly studies parasites that manipulate the behavior of their hosts\, and her research has been featured in The Atlantic\, National Geographic\, BBC World\, Science\, and Nature. When she isn’t studying Nature’s creepiest wonders\, Kelly is writing books with her husband\, Zach Weinersmith (creator of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal Comics). Their first book\, Soonish: Ten Emerging Technologies That’ll Improve and/or Ruin Everything\, was a NYTimes Bestseller. Their next book is about the future of humans in space\, and will be published through Penguin Press.

SUMMARY:Lynne Reeves (The Dangers of an Ordinary Night) Author Talk and Q&A with Jeanne Blasberg at Savoy Bookshop & Café
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Lynne Reeves for the new book\, The Dangers of an Ordinary Night. Lynne will be in conversation with local author Jeanne Blasberg (Eden: A Novel\, The Nine). \nThis event is free\, but registration is requested. \nAbout the Book\nPerfect for fans of Celeste Ng and Megan Abbott\, Lynne Reeves’ The Dangers of an Ordinary Night is an exploration of the explosive family secrets that are often hidden in plain sight. \nOn a chilly fall evening at the prestigious Performing Arts High School of Boston\, best friends Tali Carrington and June Danforth go missing after auditioning for a play. They’re last seen in grainy\, out-of-focus surveillance footage that shows them walking away from the school. Two days later in a town south of Boston\, Tali is found disoriented and traumatized by the ocean’s edge\, while June is pronounced dead at the scene. \nTali’s mother\, Nell\, is so bent on protecting her daughter from further emotional harm that she ignores rumors of her husband’s involvement and enlists the help of Cynthia Rawlins\, a reunification therapist with personal insight into the riptide that hides below the surface of every unsuspecting family. Meanwhile\, Detective Fitz Jameson uncovers a criminal undertow involving the high school’s overachieving students\, and finally sees an opportunity for personal redemption from a secret that’s haunted him for years. \nAs Nell\, Cynthia\, and Fitz confront their own contributions to the scandals that beleaguer them\, their lives turn out to be more deeply intertwined than they’d ever imagined. In the end\, they must decide what lengths they’re willing to go to protect the people they love while also saving themselves. \nAbout Lynne Reeves\nLynne Reeves is an internationally recognized family counselor and novelist. Her short fiction\, essays\, and articles have appeared in Parents\, Psychology Today\, Solstice Literary Magazine\, Chautauqua Journal\, Craft Literary\, Fiction Writers Review\, Brain\, Child and more.
