SUMMARY:Andy Shauf in Concert (opening performance by Cassandra Jenkins)
DESCRIPTION:Andy Shauf in concert\nOpening performance by Cassandra Jenkins\nPresented by Westerly Sound at The United in Westerly\, RI\nSATURDAY\, APRIL 2ND | 8- 11 PM\n$25 ; TICKETS AVAILABLE AT UNITEDTHEATRE.ORG \nFew artists are storytellers as deft and disarmingly observational as Andy Shauf. The Toronto-based\, Saskatchewan-raised musician’s songs unfold like short fiction: they’re densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. On his new album The Neon Skyline\, he sets a familiar scene of inviting a friend for beers on the opening title track: “I said\, ‘Come to the Skyline\, I’ll be washing my sins away.’ He just laughed\, said ‘I’ll be late\, you know how I can be.'”

SUMMARY:Sharon Dukett (No Rules: A Memoir) Author Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a weekend book signing with Sharon Dukett for the release of the new book No Rules: A Memoir.\nAbout the Book\nIn this coming-of-age memoir\, Sharon takes you with her on a nail-biting adventure through the early 1970s after leaving her sheltered home life at sixteen years old to join the hippies. Yearning for freedom\, she lands in an adult world for which she is unprepared\, and must learn quickly in order to survive. \nAs Sharon navigates the US and Canada—whether by hitchhiking\, bicycle\, or the back of a motorcycle—she experiences love and heartbreak\, discovers who she can and cannot trust\, and awakens to the Women’s Liberation movement while living in a rural off-grid commune. In this colorful memoir\, she reflects upon the changes that reshaped her during that decade\, and how the ways in which she and her peers threw off the rules meant to keep women in their place has transformed and empowered the lives of girls and women today. \nAbout the Author\nSharon Dukett has been a computer programmer\, deputy director in state government\, cocktail waitress\, and project manager (PMP certified)\, and she has designed and embroidered handmade clothing. She travels extensively using loyalty points and avoiding tourist traps. When she is home\, she and her husband live in central Connecticut in a house he built that overlooks the Connecticut River―the house they raised their family in. When not writing or blogging\, she is reading\, skiing\, biking\, golfing\, spending time with family and friends\, creating clutter\, and committing to more activities than she probably should. She loves reading memoir from a variety of backgrounds―to learn how others feel\, experience life\, and deal with their struggles. No Rules is her debut memoir.

SUMMARY:Jeffrey Greene (Masters of Tonewood: The Hidden Art of Fine Stringed-Instrument Making) Author Talk and Q&A at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and Q&A with Jeffrey Greene for the new book\, Masters of Tonewood: The Hidden Art of Fine Stringed-Instrument Making. This is a partner event with Spindrift Guitars in New London! \nAbout the Book\nThe wood used by master craftsmen to create many of the world’s legendary stringed instruments—violins and cellos\, mandolins and guitars—comes from seven near-mythic European forests. In his latest book\, Jeffrey Greene takes the reader into those woodlands and into luthiers’ workshops to show us how the world’s finest instruments not only contribute to great musical art but are prized works of art in themselves. \nMasters of Tonewood describes the “hidden life” of stringed instruments\, beginning with the unique wood\, expertly chosen and sometimes cured for decades\, that gives them voices that rivet audiences. Greene takes us to forests in Italy\, France\, Switzerland\, Austria\, Romania\, Poland\, and the Czech Republic. We are introduced to the acoustical and aesthetic properties of the spruce that Stradivari treasured\, and the mystery of why just one in a thousand maple trees contains decorative figuring worthy of the highest-quality instruments. Greene visits the greatest traditional centers of this craft\, from Spain to the United States. He recounts the ideas and experiences of tonewood millers\, luthiers\, and musicians and discusses their concerns about environmental issues associated with a tradition dependent on ancient woodlands in a modern world. \nAbout Jeffrey Greene\nJeffrey Greene takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the forests of Europe and with every page richly uncovers the mysteries held within the tonewood of the finest stringed instruments ever made.

Please register on our website. \nAbout the Book\nIn this beautifully written\, vividly detailed memoir\, a young woman chronicles her adventures traveling across the deserts of the American West in an orange van named Bertha and reflects on an unconventional approach to life \nA woman defined by motion\, Brianna Madia bought a beat-up bright orange van\, filled it with her two dogs Bucket and Dagwood\, and headed into the canyons of Utah with her husband. Nowhere for Very Long is her deeply felt\, immaculately told story of exploration—of the world outside and the spirit within. \nHowever\, pursuing a life of intention isn’t always what it seems. In fact\, at times it was downright boring\, exhausting\, and even desperate—when Bertha overheated and she was forced to pull over on a lonely stretch of South Dakota highway; when the weather was bitterly cold and her water jugs froze beneath her as she slept in the parking lot of her office; when she worried about money\, her marriage\, and the looming question mark of her future. But Brianna was committed to living a life true to herself\, come what may\, and that made all the difference. \nNowhere for Very Long is the true story of a woman learning and unlearning\, from backroads to breakdowns\, from married to solo\, and finally\, from lost to found to lost again . . . this time\, on purpose. \nAbout Brianna Madia\nBRIANNA MADIA has lived a life of relentless intention\, traveling the deserts of the American Southwest in an old Ford van. She made a name for herself on social media with her inspiring captions cum- essays about bravery\, identity\, nature\, and subverting expectations. She lives in Utah with her four dogs. Nowhere for Very Long is her first book.

SUMMARY:Digital Program: Haiku: Capturing Moments in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join poet Jennifer Y. Montgomery on a journey through the history of haiku and other forms of Japanese micro poetry. From frogs to Zen meditation to clandestine feudal love letters. She’ll then guide us through the basics of writing haiku. It’s much more than just counting lines and syllables; each haiku presents a season and a single moment in nature. Think about your favorite season and come prepared to write your own haiku. \nSpeaker Bio\nJennifer Y. Montgomery is a writer\, artist\, storyteller\, attorney\, and pie baker who lives in Connecticut with her daughter. She grew up in rural North Dakota but believes she has no discernible accent. She has also lived in California\, Minnesota\, Scotland\, Israel\, and Connecticut. All of these places have influenced her life and writing. Her poems have appeared in Poetry Quarterly\, Enclave\, Jitter\, Haiku Journal\, 50 Haiku\, Failed Haiku\, Red Weather\, and elsewhere. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in Hinterland. She has told many stories on stage and has been featured on the Mouth storytelling podcast. She believes that truth is stranger than fiction and authenticity is the highest art form. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. SUMMARY:Stewart O'Nan (Ocean State) Author Talk and Q&A at Savoy Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Stewart O’Nan for the new book\, Ocean State. This event is in partnership with Ashaway Free Library. This author talk is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Book\nSet in a working-class town on the Rhode Island coast\, O’Nan’s latest is a crushing\, beautifully written\, and profoundly compelling novel about sisters\, mothers\, and daughters\, and the terrible things love makes us do. \nIn the first line of Ocean State\, we learn that a high school student was murdered\, and we find out who did it. The story that unfolds from there with incredible momentum is thus one of the build-up to and fall-out from the murder\, told through the alternating perspectives of the four women at its heart. Angel\, the murderer\, Carol\, her mother\, and Birdy\, the victim\, all come alive on the page as they converge in a climax both tragic and inevitable. Watching over it all is the retrospective testimony of Angel’s younger sister Marie\, who reflects on that doomed autumn of 2009 with all the wisdom of hindsight. \nAngel and Birdy love the same teenage boy\, frantically and single-mindedly\, and are compelled by the intensity of their feelings to extremes neither could have anticipated. O’Nan’s expert hand paints a fully realized portrait of these women\, but also weaves a compelling and heartbreaking story of working-class life in Ashaway\, Rhode Island. Propulsive\, moving\, and deeply rendered\, Ocean State is a masterful novel by one of our greatest storytellers. \nAbout Stewart O’Nan\nStewart O’Nan is the author of numerous books\, including Wish You Were Here\, Everyday People\, In the Walled City\, The Speed Queen\, and Emily\, Alone. His 2007 novel\, Last Night at the Lobster\, was a national bestseller and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. He was born and raised in Pittsburgh\, where he lives with his family.

SUMMARY:The True Depths of the Plastic Crisis: Thicker Than Water
DESCRIPTION:Plastic is everywhere–it’s in our food containers\, keyboards\, glasses\, even our toothbrushes. It’s lightweight\, versatile\, and so cheap that we often forget how much it permeates our lives. But our relationship with plastic is not a healthy one\, and our worldwide reliance on it is affecting our planet and our bodies. \nAuthor Erica Cirino has traveled across land and sea to reveal the true depths of the plastic crisis\, which she details in her recent book\, Thicker Than Water: The Quest for Solutions to the Plastic Crisis (published by Island Press\, in October 2021). In Thicker Than Water\, Erica documents plastic across ecosystems and elements; shares stories from the primarily Black\, brown\, Indigenous and rural communities that are disproportionally harmed by industrial pollution globally; and uncovers strategies that work to prevent plastic from causing further devastation to our planet and its inhabitants. \nErica also works as a science writer and artist exploring the intersection of the human and nonhuman worlds. Her widely published photojournalistic works depict the numerous ways people connect to nature—wild creatures in particular—and shape planet Earth. She lives with her rescued street dog\, Sabi\, on and between two shores\, Long Island and Connecticut. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. Space is limited. Masks must be worn at all times. Please notify the Library if you register and are unable to attend.

SUMMARY:Rachel Barenbaum (Atomic Anna) Author Talk and Q&A at Savoy Bookshop & Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Savoy Bookshop & Café presents an author talk and Q&A with Rachel Barenbaum for the new book\, Atomic Anna. \nAbout the Book\nFrom the author of A Bend in the Stars\, an epic adventure as three generations of women work together and travel through time to prevent the Chernobyl disaster and right the wrongs of their past. \nThree brilliant women.\nTwo life-changing mistakes.\nOne chance to reset the future. \nIn 1986\, renowned nuclear scientist\, Anna Berkova\, is sleeping in her bed in the Soviet Union when Chernobyl’s reactor melts down. It’s the exact moment she tears through time—and it’s an accident. When she opens her eyes\, she’s landed in 1992 only to discover Molly\, her estranged daughter\, shot in the chest. Molly\, with her dying breath\, begs Anna to go back in time and stop the disaster\, to save Molly’s daughter Raisa\, and put their family’s future on a better path. \nIn ‘60s Philadelphia\, Molly is coming of age as an adopted refusenik. Her family is full of secrets and a past they won’t share. She finds solace in comic books\, drawing her own series\, Atomic Anna\, and she’s determined to make it as an artist. When she meets the volatile\, charismatic Viktor\, their romance sets her life on a very different course. \nIn the ‘80s\, Raisa\, is a lonely teen and math prodigy\, until a quiet\, handsome boy moves in across the street and an odd old woman shows up claiming to be her biological grandmother. As Raisa finds new issues of Atomic Anna in unexpected places\, she notices each comic challenges her to solve equations leading to one impossible conclusion: time travel. And she finally understands what she has to do. \nAs these remarkable women work together to prevent the greatest nuclear disaster of the 20th century\, they grapple with the power their discoveries hold. Just because you can change the past\, does it mean you should? \nAbout Rachel Barenbaum\nRACHEL’S second novel is ATOMIC ANNA. Her debut\, A BEND IN THE STARS was named a New York Times Summer Reading Selection and a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection. It was also a Boston Globe Bestseller. \nRachel is a prolific writer and reviewer and her work has appeared in the LA Review of Books\, the Tel Aviv Review of Books and DeadDarlings. She is an Honorary Research Associate at the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute at Brandeis University and a graduate of GrubStreet’s Novel Incubator.
