SUMMARY:Book Launch Party for Beatriz Williams' OUR WOMAN IN MOSCOW!
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and the Mystic Museum of Art invite you to a book release party for bestselling author Beatriz Williams’ new novel\, Our Woman in Moscow. Tickets to this event are $35 and include a signed copy of Our Woman in Moscow and light refreshments. \n– This event will take place outdoors on MMoA’s beautiful stone patio.\n– Attendees of this in-person event will be eligible to attend the virtual book launch event on Thursday\, June 3rd at 7 PM EST with Beatriz Williams and Marie Benedict. \nAbout the Book \nThe New York Times bestselling author of Her Last Flight returns with a gripping and profoundly human story of Cold War espionage and family devotion. \nIn the autumn of 1948\, Iris Digby vanishes from her London home with her American diplomat husband and their two children. The world is shocked by the family’s sensational disappearance. Were they eliminated by the Soviet intelligence service? Or have the Digbys defected to Moscow with a trove of the West’s most vital secrets? \nFour years later\, Ruth Macallister receives a postcard from the twin sister she hasn’t seen since their catastrophic parting in Rome in the summer of 1940\, as war engulfed the continent and Iris fell desperately in love with an enigmatic United States Embassy official named Sasha Digby. Within days\, Ruth is on her way to Moscow\, posing as the wife of counterintelligence agent Sumner Fox in a precarious plot to extract the Digbys from behind the Iron Curtain. \nBut the complex truth behind Iris’s marriage defies Ruth’s understanding\, and as the sisters race toward safety\, a dogged Soviet KGB officer forces them to make a heartbreaking choice between two irreconcilable loyalties. \nAbout the Author \nBeatriz Williams is the bestselling author of thirteen novels\, including Her Last Flight\, The Summer Wives\, and The Golden Hour\, as well as All the Ways We Said Goodbye\, cowritten with Lauren Willig and Karen White. A native of Seattle\, she graduated from Stanford University and earned an MBA in finance from Columbia University. She lives with her husband and four children near the Connecticut shore\, where she divides her time between writing and laundry.

SUMMARY:Norman Rockwell: Inclusion\, Exclusion and Evolving Views on Race
DESCRIPTION:The illustrator Norman Rockwell is beloved for his ability to depict and define American life. He often captured bittersweet images of people experiencing universal and relatable feelings of being left out or left behind. Yet\, as an artist working in the 20th century\, his works are curiously devoid of America’s rich cultural and racial diversity. In the final decades of his career\, Rockwell painted several poignant works about race in America that can be seen as an extension of his earlier sense of the power of inclusion and exclusion. \nSpeaker Bio\nJane Oneail curates and delivers art appreciation programs to audiences throughout New England. Jane holds a master’s in Art History from Boston University and a master’s in Education from Harvard University. A New Hampshire native\, she has worked at some of the state’s most esteemed cultural institutions\, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen\, where she served as Executive Director\, and the Currier Museum of Art\, where she held the role of Senior Educator. Jane has also taught at the college level for more than a decade\, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University. For more information visit iamculturallycurious.com. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. You will receive a Zoom invitation the morning of the program. \nRegister

Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nFor more than four hundred years\, New England shipyards have contributed significantly to America’s maritime and naval supremacy. This compelling story is presented through the histories of seventy ships built from the colonial era down to modern times. Well-known vessels like the Constitution\, the Nautilus\, the Flying Cloud and the infamous whaleship Essex are included\, but so\, too\, are lesser-known ships\, including the ill-fated Wyoming and the far-ranging voyager Union. Every type of vessel is covered–their building or voyages making nautical news\, often in exciting fashion\, and their exploits filled with adventure\, danger\, tragedy and survival. Historian and author Glenn A. Knoblock explores the construction\, life and demise of these ships and details their contribution to our nation’s maritime heritage. \nAbout Glenn Knoblock\nGlenn Knoblock (1962-) is a native of Ohio with New England roots. After graduating with a BA in History from Bowling Green State University (Ohio)\, he moved to New Hampshire in 1984 and has been there ever since. In his numerous works he has explored unusual aspects of New Hampshire history. He has also specialized in African American military history\, both at the state and national level. His work “Strong and Brave Soldiers: New Hampshire’s Black Soldiers and Sailors of the American Revolution” has been called by one reviewer “a powerful\, uplifting\, and shameful story\, a profound tale”. Nationally\, Glenn is an expert on African Americans who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II\, as documented in his book “Black Submariners of the U.S. Navy”\, and has documented all known African American Naval\, Coast Guard\, and Merchant Marine casualties and award winners from WW II in yet another work. What drives Glenn in his choice of research and book topics? “Its all about recovering our lost history\, and documenting the achievements and contributions of notable individuals whose stories would otherwise be lost”. In continuing this mission\, Glenn has been a primary contributor\, in both print and online editions\, to the African American National Biography Project\, a collaborative work between Harvard and Oxford University Press. To date\, he has authored the biographies of over 100 significant African American military servicemen that have served from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War. \nGlenn and his wife Terry\, and their daughter Anna\, live in Wolfeboro Falls\, NH. \nRegister

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: Read of The Day with David Handler (The Man Who Wasn't All There)
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The Day present a Read of The Day event with David Handler for the release of his new book\, The Man Who Wasn’t All There. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. Registration details are at the bottom of this page. \nAbout the Book\nThe latest installment of David Handler’s Edgar Award-winning Stewart Hoag mystery series\, set in 1990s’ New York\, sees the ghostwriter-sleuth and his faithful basset hound Lulu inadvertently make a dangerous enemy. \nAfter six glorious weeks of hard work on his long-overdue second novel\, celebrity-ghostwriter Stewart “Hoagy” Hoag has hit a crossroads in his plot. He thinks a change of scenery will do him good – and he knows just the place. His ex-wife\, the actress Merilee Nash\, has offered him the use of her idyllic Connecticut farmhouse\, while she’s away shooting a movie in Budapest. \nHoagy and his beloved basset hound Lulu settle in for a few days’ rest and relaxation. Hoagy expects fall splendor\, long walks and crisp night air. He doesn’t expect Merilee’s eccentric\, unwelcoming neighbor. Austin Talmadge warns Hoagy not to get on his bad side\, but what harm can a country oddball like Austin do? \nQuite a lot\, it turns out. All Hoagy wants to do is relax and clear his head\, but soon he’s caught up in a strange\, complex mystery – and he’ll need all his wits about him\, and Lulu’s unerring nose\, if he’s to come out of this one alive . . . \nAbout David Handler\nDavid Handler has written eleven novels about the witty and dapper celebrity ghostwriter Stewart Hoag and his faithful\, neurotic basset hound\, Lulu\, including the Edgar- and American Mystery Award-winning The Man Who Would Be F. Scott Fitzgerald. His other series include the Berger/Mitry franchise and two novels featuring private eye Benji Golden. David was a member of the original writing staff that created the Emmy Award-winning sitcom Kate and Allie\, and has continued to write extensively for television and films on both coasts. He lives in a 200-year-old carriage house in Old Lyme\, Connecticut. \nRegister
