DESCRIPTION:You’ve learned all about the impact of invasive species on the Mystic River Estuary\, now join us for a Guided Tour of the Mystic River Estuary at the Mystic Seaport with Dr. Carlton. The library will sponsor attendance for up to 30 participants. Please meet us at 4:45 in front of the North Entrance on Greenmanville Ave. Dress warmly if necessary. Although an outdoor activity\, face masks are encouraged due to participants’ proximity to one another. \nRegistration is required to attend this program. Please only register if you are certain you can attend. Notify the Library if you cannot make it so we can offer your spot to another interested patron. \nSpeaker Bio\nDr. James T. Carlton is a Professor of Marine Sciences Emeritus at Williams College (Williamstown\, Massachusetts USA) and Director (1989-2015) Emeritus of the Williams College – Mystic Seaport Ocean and Coastal Studies Program (Mystic\, Connecticut). His research is focused on the environmental history of estuaries and coastal marine ecosystems\, especially on invasions of non-native species and modern-day extinctions. Jim is the only scientist to receive the Interagency Recognition Award from the United States Federal Government for his national and international work to reduce the impacts of exotic species invasions in the sea. SUMMARY:Community Carol Sing at Mystic Seaport Museum
DESCRIPTION:This will be the 73rd year of the Community Carol Sing. \nTo accommodate a safe and socially distant event due to COVID-19\, the singalong will be held as a drive-in at the Museum’s south parking lot. The songs will be broadcast so carolers can tune in on their car radio and join in the singing. The music will be led by the University of Connecticut’s Director of Choral Studies\, Jamie Spillane\, backed by a small choir and brass quartet. \nAdmission to the event is an item of non-perishable food\, diapers/wipes\, or pet food\, which will be donated to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. All attendees of the event will also receive free admission to the Museum that day. \nThe parking lot opens at 1 p.m. and space is limited to 500 visitors. The event is first-come\, first-served. Festive decorations on vehicles are encouraged with prizes for the most spirited autos.

DESCRIPTION:Mystic Seaport Museum invites the public to mark the holidays with a new event\, Lantern Light Village\, an outdoor\, free-roaming experience designed to celebrate the best of both the contemporary and 19th-century holiday seasons. \nThe Lantern Light Village will seamlessly transition between the Christmas of today and the Christmas of the past. Entry to the village will be a dazzling lighting display\, followed by live music\, the horse-and-carriage rides\, fire pits\, a visit from St. Nicolas\, and more\, including holiday-themed stories\, crafts\, and games. Visitors can interact with the denizens of the 19th-century village as they prepare for Christmas Eve and join them in their end-of-the-year festivities. \nLantern Light Village will be held 5-9 p.m. on December 4-5\, 11-12\, and 18-19. \nTickets are $33 for Adults (ages 13 and up) and $28 for youths (ages 4-12). Ages 1-3 are free. Museum members receive a discounted price. \nBuy Tickets Online \nVisitors are required to wear masks and observe social distancing while at the Museum. \nThe event replaces the Museum’s traditional Lantern Light Tours\, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the end of the walk\, visitors can enjoy food and live music\, play a lawn game\, warm up by a roaring fire\, or join a small tour that explores the darker side of the Museum’s historic village. \nThe walk runs 5:30-9:00 p.m. each night. \nAdmission to the Jack-o-Lantern Walk is by a special ticket: \n\nAdults (ages 13 and up) $20.00\, Youth (ages 4-12) $15.00.\nMuseum members: Adult $17.50 and Youth $12.00.\n\nTickets may be purchased online at checkout.mysticseaport.org/all/tickets. \nPrior to the Jack-o-Lantern Walk\, the Museum will hold two days of public pumpkin carving where visitors can carve one or more pumpkins that will be displayed in the walk. Pumpkins and all tools will be provided\, and participants will receive a $2 discount coupon to be applied against admission to the walk. Independent craftspeople and woodworkers will be spread throughout the Museum grounds displaying their projects and products\, and providing demonstrations for visitors. \nParticipating artisans are: \n\nWoodworkers Guild of Rhode Island – Demonstrating a range of skills from sharpening and squaring a board to relief carving and carving in the round\nTom Lauria – Scratch-built fine scale ship and boat models\nPaul Schmitt – Kit and scratch built ship models\nAlex Bellinger – Ships in bottles\, completed and in progress\nBrian Cooper – Demonstrating the creation of a Greenland kayak paddle using all hand tools\nChris Sanders – Tool-sharpening demonstrations\nKatherine Park – One-of-a-kind furniture\nLaurent Robert – Intricate\, decorative wood carving using traditional methods\nDavid Douyard – Handmade chairs\n\nCenterbrook Architects & Planners industrial designer and model maker\, Patrick McCauley\, will be working in the A Way with Wood exhibition\, where he will fabricate a chair from the Centerbrook Chairshop. The Chairshop is an in-house program where staff members design and build a chair incorporating diverse materials\, construction techniques\, and finishes. Chairs from previous classes will be on display\, as well as imagery that celebrates the history of the program and its participants. \nAt 11 a.m.\, Saturday\, the principal designer of the Museum’s Thompson Exhibition Building\, Chad Floyd\, FAIA\, of Centerbrook Architects & Planners\, will give a presentation to discuss why and how wood was used in the building’s design. The talk will be in the Masin Room of the Thompson Building. Seating is limited and available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nAll Woodcraft Weekend events and activities are free and included with Museum admission. SUMMARY:SALT: Tracing Memories
DESCRIPTION:Mystic Seaport Museum is proud to present its latest exhibition\, SALT: Tracing Memories by contemporary Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto. His work is especially relevant to the Museum as his medium is salt\, a mineral intertwined with the sea. The floor of the Collins Gallery will serve as Yamamoto’s canvas. \nOver a period of ten days\, the artist will meticulously fashion his vision of intricately carved shapes forming a 1\,000-square-foot design\, one of the largest he has ever created. During certain days\, visitors will be able to view Yamamoto at work during the creation of the installation either from the floor or ascend ramps onto platforms to gain a different perspective. The installation will be enhanced by hands-on “tables” where visitors can shape their own designs out of the same type of salt used for Yamamoto’s sculpture.\nThe completed artwork will be displayed in the Collins Gallery in the Thompson Exhibition Building between May 9 and September 6. A time-lapse video of Yamamoto installing SALT: Tracing Memories will enable visitors to understand and appreciate the artistry and labor involved in its creation. \nYamamoto’s work is drawn from deep experiences of personal loss and cultural traditions. In Yamamoto’s words\, “Drawing a labyrinth with salt is like following a trace of my memory. Memories seem to change and vanish as time goes by; however\, what I seek is to capture a frozen moment that cannot be attained through pictures or writings. His work is especially relevant to the Museum as his medium is salt\, a mineral intertwined with the sea. The floor of the Collins Gallery will serve as Yamamoto’s canvas. \nOver a period of ten days\, the artist will meticulously fashion his vision of intricately carved shapes forming a 1\,000-square-foot design\, one of the largest he has ever created. During certain days\, visitors will be able to view Yamamoto at work during the creation of the installation either from the floor or ascend ramps onto platforms to gain a different perspective. The installation will be enhanced by hands-on “tables” where visitors can shape their own designs out of the same type of salt used for Yamamoto’s sculpture.\nThe completed artwork will be displayed in the Collins Gallery in the Thompson Exhibition Building between May 9 and September 6. A time-lapse video of Yamamoto installing SALT: Tracing Memories will enable visitors to understand and appreciate the artistry and labor involved in its creation. \nYamamoto’s work is drawn from deep experiences of personal loss and cultural traditions. In Yamamoto’s words\, “Drawing a labyrinth with salt is like following a trace of my memory. Even though the tour guide is excited – and determined! – to live out the plot of Dickens’s story step by faithful step\, and learns that it is love that transcends time and place which will save both Christmas and 1876 Greenmanville. \nEach performance of Lantern Light Tours is an approximately 70-minute progressive or travelling play that covers approximately half a mile of uneven terrain including cobblestone\, wood planking\, grass\, gravel\, and stairs. Audience members walk or stand for the majority of the show. Because performances occur in all weather conditions\, we strongly recommend the use of seasonal outerwear and appropriate shoes. \nPerformances of Lantern Light Tours require a special ticket in lieu of general admission. Each tour is limited to 16 people. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged as tours may fill quickly. Climb aboard historic vessels and discover the winter sky under the Treworgy Planetarium dome.
