DESCRIPTION:Opening October 21\, 2023 \nC. D. Mallory Building \nCurated by Krystal Rose and James T. Carlton \nFor millennia\, naturalists\, scientists\, sailors\, and artists have been fascinated by marine invertebrates\, an abundant\, diverse\, and ubiquitous group of sea creatures including sponges\, jellyfish\, sea anemones\, crustaceans\, mollusks (such as sea slugs and octopuses)\, sea squirts\, and many more. However\, finding a way to document these spineless species was often a challenge. When alive and in their natural habitats\, many species\, especially those with soft bodies\, present in vibrant colors and unusual shapes. When extracted from the sea\, the animals may quickly become colorless\, shapeless\, and sometimes almost unrecognizable. \nThe major exhibition Spineless\, opening in October 2023 at Mystic Seaport Museum\, will explore some of the inspiring ways that people have tried to record the ocean’s mesmerizing marine invertebrates. The main theme of the exhibition features the intriguing story of father and son glassmakers Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka of Dresden\, Germany. In the 1850s\, the elder Blaschka became fascinated by invertebrates he observed while at sea. Inspired to produce glass models that would capture their forms\, anatomical details\, and colors\, he and his son went on to create a unique mail-order catalogue business. They successfully sold and distributed these often extraordinarily fragile pieces to museums and universities around the world for teaching and display purposes. Over forty of these exquisite models from the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University and other institutions will be displayed. \nMore Info & Tickets

DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrates and honors the culture and traditions of Indigenous People around the world. Join us for an educational afternoon of drumming and singing with the Eastern Medicine Singers. Made up of RI\, NY\, NJ\, and Southeastern Massachusetts Tribes\, the Eastern Medicine Singers are dedicated to keeping the eastern woodlands American Indian culture alive\, and are proud to sing and drum in the language of Massachuset and Wampanoag dialect. In this participatory program\, enjoy traditional and contemporary music on the waterfront while learning about Indigenous traditions\, history\, and culture today. Bench seating is provided\, but visitors are also welcome to bring their own lawn chairs. In the event of rain\, the performance will take place in a covered location on the Museum grounds. Oceanus takes the viewer on a journey of global discovery beneath the world’s changing seas\, deftly weaving natural history\, archeology\, adventure\, political analysis\, and science into a story about the human condition.\n\nAfter the tour\, you’ll head to the patio of waterfront restaurant\, Greenmans’ Landing\, to enjoy a bespoke “Myst On The Water” cocktail\, created by Anthony. This smoked gin martini is a tribute to the early morning fogs that drift in over the kelp beds surrounding coastal Connecticut\, and features pickled Stonington Kelp Co. kelp mingling with Stonington scallops in sugar kelp-infused gin\, topped by a gentle haze of locally-grown thyme smoke.\n\nTo complete the evening\, you’ll stroll along the Mystic River at sunset to visit the scenic Thomas Oyster House exhibit where Suzie will talk about regenerative ocean farming\, which focuses on restoring the planet and nurturing local communities. In the event of rain\, the performance will take place in a covered location on the Museum grounds. Rain location seating is limited and on a first-come\, first-served basis. DESCRIPTION:Gaelin Rosenwaks is a marine scientist\, explorer\, photographer\, filmmaker\, and author of Sperm Whales: The Gentle Goliaths of the Oceans. In celebration of Alexis Rockman’s Oceanus exhibition\, on June 15\, Rosenwaks joins us to recall her experience in the waters off Dominica\, where she observed—eye to eye—the close bond between mother and child firsthand. What she found is that these animals live in matriarchal family units made up of remarkable females that stay together for generations. Like elephants and humans\, they take care of one another. She was able to document them sleeping\, playing\, nursing\, and so much more about their vibrant lives both under the sea\, and above it. Her breathtaking photography and inspiring words – coupled with Alexis Rockman’s perspective of the undersea world in Oceanus – inspires viewers to help save whales for future generations. \nGaelin Rosenwaks began her career at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducting research in Antarctica and then earned her Master’s Degree in Coastal Environmental Management from Duke University researching Giant Bluefin Tunas. She has appeared as an expert and host on TV programs including on The Discovery Channel\, Science Channel\, CBS News\, and National Geographic Channel\, and is one of the few women to be featured on the cover of Outside Magazine. She now participates and conducts expeditions in every ocean to alert the public not only to the challenges facing the oceans\, but also to what science is doing to understand these changes. \nThis event is free for members and included in admission for non-members. In 2019\, Captain Jones answered the call to salvage her from ruin in Fiji. With a combination of efforts from local crew and others from CT who flew to her rescue\, Alvei was finally seaworthy in early 2020. Captain Jones\, a professional sailor with over 40 years’ experience\, then began the long voyage half way around the world to bring her to her new home berth here in Noank\, CT. \nThe Many Lives of ALVEI: ALVEI was originally built as a herring drifter in Scotland in the 1920s and then was commandeered as a minesweeper during WWII. After the war\, she was rigged as a small coastal freighter then converted to a three-masted auxiliary schooner during the 1980s in Portugal. She embarked on a 40-year career as an educational vessel in the South Pacific before falling into disrepair in Fiji. \nAbout the Series: Adventure Series connects audiences with individuals who have extraordinary maritime stories to tell. DESCRIPTION:Come see ship models of tugboats and a variety of related craft including towboats\, pushboats\, fireboats\, and barges. Tugboats are one of the most popular type of ship model and many types will be represented at this show\, with tugboats from the 1860s to the present. This show is organized by the Mystic Seaport Ship Modelers (MSSM)\, a special interest group of Museum members\, volunteers\, and staff. Members of the MSSM will be present to answer questions and chat with visitors throughout the duration of the show. The Watercraft Hall will be open from 1:00-3:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
