SUMMARY:Bill Goldstein (The World Broke in Two) James Merrill House Fellow Reading
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The James Merrill House present an author talk and reading with fellow\, Bill Goldstein. \nRSVP \nAbout the Book \nA revelatory narrative of the intersecting lives and works of revered authors Virginia Woolf\, T. S. Eliot\, E. M. Forster and D. H. Lawrence during 1922\, the birth year of modernism \nThe World Broke in Two tells the fascinating story of the intellectual and personal journeys four legendary writers\, Virginia Woolf\, T. S. Eliot\, E. M. Forster\, and D. H. Lawrence\, make over the course of one pivotal year. As 1922 begins\, all four are literally at a loss for words\, confronting an uncertain creative future despite success in the past. The literary ground is shifting\, as Ulysses is published in February and Proust’s In Search of Lost Time begins to be published in England in the autumn. Yet\, dismal as their prospects seemed in January\, by the end of the year Woolf has started Mrs. Dalloway\, Forster has\, for the first time in nearly a decade\, returned to work on the novel that will become A Passage to India\, Lawrence has written Kangaroo\, his unjustly neglected and most autobiographical novel\, and Eliot has finished—and published to acclaim—“The Waste Land.” \nAs Willa Cather put it\, “The world broke in two in 1922 or thereabouts\,” and what these writers were struggling with that year was in fact the invention of modernism. Based on original research\, Bill Goldstein’s The World Broke in Two captures both the literary breakthroughs and the intense personal dramas of these beloved writers as they strive for greatness. \nAbout the Author \nBill Goldstein reviews books for NBC’s Weekend Today in New York\, and was the founding editor of The New York Times books website. A graduate of the University of Chicago\, Goldstein received a PhD in English from the City University of New York Graduate Center. He began his career at Publishers Weekly\, and was later assistant books editor at New York Newsday and a senior editor at Scribner. He is writing a biography of Larry Kramer\, to be published by Crown. He has been the recipient of fellowships at the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library and at the Leon Levy Center for Biography\, and was also awarded a 2024-25 Public Scholars grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities\, in support of his work on the book. He is the author of The World Broke in Two: Virginia Woolf\, T. S. Eliot\, D. H. Lawrence\, E. M. Forster\, and the Year that Changed Literature\, published in 2017.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Metzger (The Going is Forever) James Merrill House Fellow Reading
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The James Merrill House present an author talk and reading with fellow\, Elizabeth Metzger. \nRSVP \nAbout the Book \nA collection of “oracular\, crystalline\, and utterly original” poems wrestling with a life’s shifting social structures and the multifaceted totality of the self (Maggie Millner). \nElizabeth Metzger’s third collection traces both holding on and letting go\, tracking the non-linear journeys we take and the daily distances we cross for intimacy. Braiding a dissolving marriage\, a son’s medical crisis\, and the death of a father\, the speaker reconceives loss as transformation and longing as ongoing love\, exploring the multiplicity of the self in proximity to others. How do we relate to what we cannot know about those we love? How can we separate from one another without embodying parts of ourselves we haven’t met yet? \nThe present revives the past\, and every ending becomes a devotion to new beginnings as Metzger transforms ordinary domestic ruptures into intimate portals of pleasure and pain. A degenerative disease spurs a creative awakening. A trip to the farmer’s market invites questions of monogamy. An overgrown yard yields a crisis of faith. These poems fall in love with the absences that define us\, retracing our chosen roads while following those less traveled and beckoning unlived lives. \nCelebrating the ordinary and extraordinary changes we undergo together\, this collection explores our most surprising fantasies and deep spiritual yearnings. An honest\, intricate\, and breathtaking distillation of love’s true nature\, The Going Is Forever reminds us that our closest relationships contain endless mysteries\, and that there is never just one version of a life. \nAbout the Author \nElizabeth Metzger is the author of The Going Is Forever\, forthcoming in September 2026 from Milkweed Editions. Her previous collections are Lying In and The Spirit Papers\, winner of the Juniper Prize for Poetry. She is a poetry editor of The Los Angeles Review of Books and teaches poetry at 92NY and Columbia University.

SUMMARY:Ernest Hilbert (Storm Swimmer) James Merrill House Fellow Reading
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books and The James Merrill House present an author talk and reading with fellow\, Ernest Hilbert. \nWant a signed copy\, but can’t attend the live event? Purchase the book below and specify your signing and personalization request in the order comments and we will do our best to accommodate the request. \nRSVP and Purchase Book \nAbout the Book \nIn poems celebrating survival and renewal\, Ernest Hilbert summons the ageless conflict between human affection and the passing of time\, recognizing that all we love must eventually disappear. Tender poems of fatherhood weigh against unsettling explorations of natural dangers and intimations of bodily harm. From porn sets to seedy gun ranges and heavy metal tribute nights in crumbling theaters\, Hilbert’s eye roves over the desolation and beauty of contemporary America\, all the while feeling the irresistible pull of water—what Melville called “the ungraspable phantom of life.” His poems return again and again to rivers\, lakes\, and the sea\, there to find “a universe that loves the dark\,” one that “bears you up as if you had no weight.” \nAbout the Author \nErnest Hilbert is the author of the poetry collections Sixty Sonnets\, All of You on the Good Earth\, Caligulan—selected as winner of the 2017 Poets’ Prize—and Last One Out. His fifth book\, Storm Swimmer\, was selected by Rowan Ricardo Phillips as the winner of the 2022 Vassar Miller Prize. He has written about books for The Washington Post\, The Wall Street Journal\, and the Times Literary Supplement. His poem “Mars Ultor” was included in Best American Poetry\, and his poetry has appeared widely in such journals as Yale Review\, American Poetry Review\, BOMB\, Harvard Review\, Arion\, Sewanee Review\, Hudson Review\, Boston Review\, The New Republic\, American Scholar\, and the London Review. In 2023 he was awarded the Meringoff Writing Award for Poetry from the Association of Literary Scholars\, Critics\, and Writers. He lives with his wife and son in Philadelphia\, where he works as a rare book dealer. Visit him at www.ernesthilbert.com
