SUMMARY:Laura Jackson (The Busy Beast) Storytime and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Laura Jackson reads from her book\, The Busy Beast at our storytime event! \nAbout the Book\nWhen the Busy Beast arrives one day\, “musts” and “have-to’s” push out play. The grown-ups think the Beast has won\, but the children know what must be done… This is a story about the importance of a slow childhood and a reminder that we all have the power to say “NO”. \nThe Busy Beast is a disagreeable monster who comes to town and fills everyone’s schedules to the brim. But his tenure ends when the children push back and demand more time for play. With rhyming verse and compelling illustrations\, the book invites families to start a conversation about busyness and\, perhaps\, to slow down a bit. \nAbout the Author\nLaura Jackson is a writer and educator who is passionate about student-centered learning and alternative education. She lives on the Connecticut shoreline with her husband and two young children and enjoys all things DIY. \nMore Details

SUMMARY:Ellen Carol DuBois (Elizabeth Cady Stanton: A Revolutionary Life) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP for this event at BankSquareBooks.com/events\nBank Square Books and the Mystic and Noank Library present an author talk and signing with Ellen Carol DuBois for her book Elizabeth Cady Stanton: A Revolutionary Life. Ellen will be in conversation with Lisa Wilson. \nAbout the Book\nElizabeth Cady Stanton was a singular leader\, thinker\, and organizer whose fight for women’s emancipation stretched from the 1840s to her death in 1902\, a full fifth of America’s history. Yet her legacy has been marked by controversy. In this landmark biography\, eminent historian Ellen Carol DuBois paints a fresh portrait of this complex crusader whose tireless work made contemporary feminism possible.\nBorn in 1815 into a family deeply marked by the tumult of the American Revolution and surging evangelicalism\, Stanton was captivated by Enlightenment ideas about individual freedom and transformed by early experiences in what she called “the school of antislavery.” Though most remembered for her fight for the vote\, she was also an early crusader for women’s reproductive autonomy and reforming the institution of marriage\, and against Christianity’s subordination of women. Her rifts with Black reformers and embrace of nativist ideas tarnished her reputation\, but her words still have the ability to move and agitate people today.\nBuilding upon exhaustive archival research and a deep engagement with Stanton’s copious writings\, Elizabeth Cady Stanton brilliantly captures a crucial reformer in all of her intelligence\, moral ambiguity\, and power. \nAbout the Author\nEllen Carol DuBois is distinguished professor of history at UCLA. Her pioneering works on the US woman suffrage movement include Feminism and Suffrage: The Emergence of an Independent Women’s Movement in America\, 1848–1869\, Harriot Stanton Blatch and the Winning of Woman Suffrage\, and Suffrage: Women’s Long Battle for the Vote. She lives in Los Angeles. \nAbout Lisa Wilson\nLisa Wilson focuses her present research on North America and the Caribbean. She has recently begun a project comparing the experiences of seventeenth-century women in Barbados\, Bermuda\, Virginia and New England. She has published on topics such as widowhood\, manhood\, and stepfamilies in Early America.

SUMMARY:Weijia Pan (Motherlands) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP for this event at BankSquareBooks.com/events\nBank Square Books and The James Merrill House present an author talk and signing with fellow\, Weijia Pan for his book\, Motherlands. \nAbout the Book\nChosen by Louise Glück for the Max Ritvo Poetry Prize\, this engrossing debut interrogates history\, identity\, and the power of poetry to elucidate both. \nMotherlands opens with a child drawn early to poetry. “In summer I write. Two lines at a time\, two vying souls / running up the wall.” The collection follows this speaker-poet through a childhood in post-Maoist China and an eventual move to the United States\, laying bare cultural and linguistic tensions in both historical and modern settings. He cites Chinese laborers toiling in American factories—an echo of the brutalities endured by those who constructed the Transatlantic Railroad—and speaks to anxieties around belonging\, assimilation\, and identity. “If I forget one character a day\,” he writes. “I will have forgotten Chinese / by the end of 2042.” \nIn these attentive\, imaginative poems\, Weijia Pan questions the artist’s duty—his duty—as a chronicler of truth\, especially through issues of displacement and global injustice. What can the poet do but observe? And yet\, in unpacking ancestral traumas connected to Maoist China and modern-day bigotry exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic\, he still finds himself turning to art as a way to understand both the self and the world at large. Through elegant juxtapositions\, Pan crafts an emotional world that is at once regional and universal—Li Bai and Du Fu sit alongside Glenn Gould and Sviatoslav Richter\, pepper used to bless new roads is repurposed in the mace used against protesters\, two languages compete on a single tongue. Lyrical and visionary\, this collection embodies poetry’s capacity to ground us\, teach us\, and change us. \nAbout the Author\nWeijia Pan is the author of Motherlands\, selected by Louise Glück for the 2023 Max Ritvo Poetry Prize and published by Milkweed Editions in 2024. A poet and translator from Shanghai\, China\, his work has appeared in AGNI\, Boulevard\, Cincinnati Review\, Copper Nickel\, and Poetry Daily. He received an MFA from the University of Houston and is currently a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.

SUMMARY:Bestselling Author Donna Russo Book Signing at Bank Square Books
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 2\, from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM\, Bestselling Rhode Island author Donna Russo will be signing copies of her latest release\, the critically acclaimed\, VINCENT’S WOMEN at Bank Square Books\, 54 West Main Street\, Mystic\, CT 06355 860-415-4406. \n‘Vincent’s Women’ is the untold story of Vincent’s loves: how they shaped his life\, his art\, and his death. It writes against the ‘myths\, ‘ exploring the possibility that none of them are true. It is the only novel to bring into question his sexuality\, how he lost his ear\, who he lost it for\, and how he might have died\, all through the eyes of a woman. We learn of Her; we learn all of it through Her. \nThe story is guided by Johanna van Gogh Bonger\, Vincent’s sister-in-law\, as she decides to reveal the truth about Vincent to her son. We are then taken on a journey through Vincent’s life\, each section bringing a pivotal moment of Vincent’s life alive while showing us the part she played in bringing it about. Between each woman\, our guide\, Johanna\, gives us the transitional periods\, right up to his death\, which is now in question. \nHundreds of the nearly thousand letters between Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo\, now considered one of the greatest documents of the human experience\, were used to help construct this novel\, its narrative\, and dialogue\, especially the dialogue of Vincent himself. \nVincent van Gogh is one of the most well-known artists of all time. The world knows of his madness\, traumas\, and suicide. But what if everything we think we know about Vincent van Gogh is all lies? What if this knowledge is based on rumors and nothing more? What if his true story is vastly different when based on factual material and forensic information? What if the truth of Vincent’s life-his madness and his genius-is defined by his never-ending search for love? \n“Arresting…masterful… a provocative and compelling look at one of history’s most enigmatic artists.”\n-Publishers Weekly \n“A symphonic novel that sheds new light on an elusive genius.”\n-Kirkus Reviews \n“Vincent’s Women represents historical fiction at its best…astute\, thought-provoking\, and revealing.”\n-Midwest Book Review \n“One of the most wonderful books about an artist I have ever read.”\n-Stephanie Cowell\, Author of Claude and Camille: A Novel of Monet\, and Marrying Mozart. Recipient American Book Award. \n“A powerful and satisfying read.”\n-Lynn Cullen\, Bestselling Author of The Woman with the Cure and Mrs. Poe \n“The writing and dialogue are all so well done\, and the use of a fictional narrative makes it all feel authentic. Very highly recommended.”\n-Readers’ Favorite 5-star Review \n“This novel is not just a book; it is a masterful painting in itself\, portraying the vibrant\, volatile\, and often tragic life of one of history’s most renowned artists.”\n-5-Star Amazon Review \n“This is historical fiction at its best…a tour de force!”\n-5-Star Goodreads Review \n“This is easily the best book I’ve read this year!”\n-5-star NetGalley Review \nA Foreword Reviews Editorial Selection \nFINALIST Next Generation Indie Book Awards

SUMMARY:Sharon Virts (Veil of Doubt) Author Talk & Signing
DESCRIPTION:Meet bestselling author Sharon Virts and hear as she reads from VEIL OF DOUBT. \nWhen a mother is charged with murder in a town already convinced of her guilt\, can defense attorney Powell Harrison find truth and justice in a legal system where innocence is not presumed? \nEmily Lloyd\, a young widow in Reconstruction-era Virginia\, is accused of poisoning her three-year-old daughter\, Maud. It isn’t the first death in her home—her husband and three other children all died of mysterious illnesses—so when Maud succumbs to an unexplained malady\, the town suspects foul play. Soon Mrs. Lloyd is charged not only with poisoning the child but also with murdering her children\, her husband\, and her aunt. \nEnter Powell Harrison\, a soft-spoken\, brilliant attorney who recently returned to his Virginia hometown to help his brother manage their late father’s practice. Approached to assist in Mrs. Lloyd’s defense\, Harrison initially declines\, worried that an infanticide case might tarnish their family’s reputation. But as details about the widow’s erratic behavior and her reclusive neighbors emerge\, Harrison begins to suspect that an even more sinister truth might lurk beneath the family’s horrible fate and finds himself irresistibly drawn to the case. \nBased on a shocking true story\, Veil of Doubt is part true-crime thriller\, part medical and legal procedural. Perfect for fans of Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace and filled with rich period detail gleaned from exhaustive research\, Veil of Doubt delves into the darkness of the South during Reconstruction\, exposing intrigue\, deception\, and death.

She will read sections from her brand new novel\, “Love of Art & Murder” published by Best Books Publishing. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\n“The art world is an intriguing place where many motives reside to plan an artist’s demise.”\nA tragedy at the Dahlia Art Gallery brings Rose Young’s characters together again! Georgi discovers artist Marilyn Maroney pierced dead by her sculpture. Detective Dan Morrison calls in Roxanne to console Georgi. Doctor Angela Storm and the detective take us through the haphazard investigation while we learn about the art world\, museums\, and death. Meanwhile\, Roxanne and her flamboyant friend Georgi utilize their unique sleuthing methods and find their way into Detective Morrison’s heart… through heartburn! \nAUTHOR BIO:\nRose Young’s mystery is elegant. It is easy to enjoy every word of her story. Her book is like jumping into a library\, an oasis of knowledge appealing to anyone craving an education in the finer things in life. Her murder mystery is an entertaining account of blackmail\, murder\, and adventures around Long Island Sound. Vineyards and ferries\, coffee shops and restaurants decorate this distinguished story\, inspired by novelist Robert Parker and Young’s interest in New London County. \nIn 1981\, Rose Young graduated from New England School of Art and Design in Boston with an associate’s degree. Rose was immersed in studies in drafting\, design\, and landscaping. She later worked at architecture and interior design firms before developing an interest in horticulture. Young was interviewed on SECT-TV in October 2020 in a show called “Books and Beyond” with Jim Bennet. Her readings with the CT Author Trail culminated at the Mohegan Sun casino in 2019. Her book was top ten in two categories on Amazon in 2020: “Mystery and Suspense” and “Mystery/CozyCulinary.” Young has been a member of CAPA\, the Connecticut Association of Authors and Publishers\, since 2016. Her book can be found in bookstores and on Amazon.

SUMMARY:Online Birders Book Club with DPNC
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our new birding book club starting on February 22\, from 6-7 pm on Zoom. Our first book will be Kingbird Highway: The Biggest Year in the Life of an Extreme Birder by Kenn Kaufman. \nAt sixteen\, Kenn Kaufman dropped out of the high school where he was student council president and hit the road\, hitching back and forth across America\, from Alaska to Florida\, Maine to Mexico. Maybe not all that unusual a thing to do in the seventies\, but what Kenn was searching for was a little different: not sex\, drugs\, God or even self\, but birds. A report of a rare bird would send him hitching nonstop from Pacific to Atlantic and back again. When he was broke he would pick fruit or do odd jobs to earn the fifty dollars or so that would last him for weeks. His goal was to set a record – most North American species seen in a year – but along the way he began to realize that at this breakneck pace he was only looking\, not seeing. What had been a game became a quest for a deeper understanding of the natural world. Kingbird Highway is a unique coming-of-age story\, combining a lyrical celebration of nature with wild\, and sometimes dangerous\, adventures\, starring a colorful cast of characters. \nPlease register to receive the Zoom link for Birding Book Club.
