SUMMARY:Debra Curtis (Laws of Love and Logic) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Debra Curtis for her book\, Laws of Love and Logic. \nAbout the Book \nA STUNNING DEBUT NOVEL FROM JENNA BUSH HAGER’S NEW VENTURE\, THOUSAND VOICES \nA story of two sisters\, one impossible choice\, and the long shadow of the past—perfect for readers of Broken Country. \nLily Webb has spent years trying to build a steady\, predictable life\, far from the hometown marred by tragedy and the sister she cannot seem to save from herself. \nJane has always been the brilliant sister: fierce\, complicated\, and drawn to the mysteries of the universe. But after their mother’s death\, Jane’s gifts became entangled with addiction\, pulling the sisters into a cycle of love\, guilt\, and heartbreak that neither can escape. \nLily has found comfort in a quiet marriage to a devoted scientist\, one who opened her eyes to the beauty of the natural world and offered her safety and stability. But when her first love\, a boy she lost under devastating circumstances\, returns\, Lily is forced to confront the past she thought she had buried. \nAs old wounds reopen\, and her fragile bond with Jane grows ever more tenuous\, Lily must navigate the tension between the life she’s built and the life she once imagined\, \nSpanning decades and rich with questions of faith\, science\, and the ties that hold us together\, Laws of Love and Logic is a compelling\, emotionally gripping novel about sisterhood\, forgiveness\, and the complicated nature of love. \nAbout the Author \nDebra Curtis is a retired professor of cultural anthropology at Salve Regina University\, where she specialized in gender and sexuality. This is her first novel. She is the mother of grown-up twin girls and lives in Rhode Island with her husband and her English bulldog\, Harry\, who is the star of much of her TikTok content. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Mark Joseph Stelzner (Growth Machines) Author Talk and Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author talk and signing with Mark Joseph Stelzner for his book\, Growth Machines. \nRSVP \nAbout the Book \nA provocative look at America’s compulsion to consume and our obsession’s surprising—and strange—origins. \nIn a capitalist society\, people sell their labor to purchase staples like food\, shelter\, and anxiety medication. That’s the equation of everyday economic life that we’ve always been told is true. Except\, is it really that simple anymore? No matter how unmaterialistic you may think you are\, odds are that deep within is a drive to consume because it feels good: books you won’t read\, clothes you won’t like and might wear even less\, a replacement phone whose novelty runs out as quickly as its upgrade hits the market. But what drives this impulse? \nIn Growth Machines\, Mark Joseph Stelzner shows how today’s consumers are now programmed by a US economy intent on infinite growth to work for goods they’ve been convinced they need and conditioned to want. Stelzner establishes the gaps between economic thinking and economic reality\, arguing that consumption is no longer just a reflection of needs\, but rather\, it reflects a need for transaction—in many cases\, a treat we seek out because it feels good. We work not only to be able to consume the essentials for living\, but also to consume for consumption’s sake. Yet such consumption doesn’t make us happier. Stelzner traces this strange nature of consumption to an environmental source: an economy that demands growth. To keep its economy pumping\, the US must keep Americans consuming. This makes Stelzner’s book an uncomfortable reflection on how we internalize our economy. To be an American is to consume; to consume is what makes America. \nAbout the Author \nMark Joseph Stelzner is associate professor of economics at Connecticut College. He has published in the Cambridge Journal of Economics\, The Review of Black Political Economy\, and the Journal of Happiness Studies\, and his work has been featured in The Economist and The Nation.

SUMMARY:Carol Barrios (Mahala) Weekend Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents a weekend book signing with Carol Barrios for her book Mahala. \nAbout the Book \nHistorical fiction meets family saga in this sweeping Caribbean tale perfect for fans of Jamaica Kincaid\, Wide Sargasso Sea\, and The Island of Missing Trees. \nSt. Vincent\, British West Indies\, 1900 \nA woman born before her time\, Mahala was always a maverick. Adopted by her mother’s best friend and raised next door to her biological siblings\, she grows up with the generational challenges of not one\, but two families of Indian descent navigating colonial Caribbean society. From a young age\, Mahala knows the plan all four parents have set for her future: leave school\, marry well\, run a household\, plan her own future daughters’ weddings. But she believes fiercely there must be more to life than this Caribbean island and its restrictive customs. \nSeeking to control her own destiny\, Mahala must decide if fleeing her homeland and alienating herself from her family is worth the freedom she most desperately wants. If she remains\, she will need to agree to a marriage—and a man—arranged by her family and abandon her dream of independence. If she goes\, escaping to New York and its gleaming opportunities\, her innate intelligence and confidence may have to be enough for her to build the life she’s always dreamed of—a life of integrity\, strength\, and love of her own choosing. \nMahala is a page-turning\, coming-of-age story about women’s rights\, family expectations\, and the courage to forge your own path in a world determined to limit your choices. \nAbout the Author \nCarol Marques Barrios is a graduate of the University of Connecticut\, where she earned both her Bachelor of Science in marketing and Master of Business Administration. She lives with her husband and three daughters in Fairfield\, Connecticut. Mahala is her first novel. \nRSVP
