Mystic Museum of Art Exhibitions: Oct – Nov 2019

Both shows will run October 11 – November 16, 2019.

Oil and Water: J.M.W. Turner’s Influence on the Mystic Art Colony

Running concurrently with Mystic Seaport Museum’s J.M.W. Turner: Watercolors from Tate, the Mystic Museum of Art (MMoA) presents a curated, complementary exhibition exploring the artistic innovation and influence of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851).

Achieving international fame in his own lifetime, lifelong Londoner J.M.W. Turner is credited with being the catalyst that inspired passionate young artists like Monet and Pissaro to abandon traditional art salons to paint en plein air; leading to the creation of the Impressionist movement, the American Impressionists, and Abstract Expressionism. MMoA and the Mystic Seaport Museum are working together to create inter-institutional programming and workshops.

Featuring works of art pulled from MMoA’s permanent collection, Oil and Water: J.M.W. Turner’s Influence on the Mystic Art Colony will focus on Turner’s legacy on the international art world, and how the techniques he pioneered in 18th-century Britain influenced the 20th-century artists of the burgeoning Mystic Art Colony, citing specific examples in each piece selected for display.

Photo Show 41

Since 1978, Mystic Museum of Art (MMoA) has presented an annual, open juried exhibition dedicated entirely to the field of photography, celebrating the many different styles and techniques employed in the medium by local artists. This year’s juror will be Eileen McCarney Muldoon, a practicing photographer, instructor, and soon to be three-time published author.
